3 Low Pressure Sewer System vs Gravity Sewer Systems E/One developed the concept of the household grinder pump starting in Today, celebrating four decades of leadership, the E/One Extreme series grinder pump is more reliable and rugged than ever before. As communities migrate from septic tanks to central sewer systems, they will consider pressure sewer and gravity sewer systems. Gravity sewer systems are the original central sewers, with origins in the Roman aqueducts. They must be accurately bedded along a continuous downward grade and often involve very deep trenches and large, costly lift stations. Septic tanks have been a common method of residential sanitary waste disposal, but they may fail over time, polluting ground and recreational water and creating serious safety problems. Gravity sewer systems may not be feasible for new construction projects as they can require large, deep trenches that make the project too expensive. Hilly land, rocky soil, or a high water table can add more complications. Pressure sewers can be installed in any terrain and need only small-diameter mains buried just below the frost line. Design & Life Claims Throughout E/One s more than 45 years of designing and engineering products for pressure sewer applications, we have learned that laboratory date cannot be simply converted into field date. E/One routinely subjects products to the equivalent of 50 years through life-cycle testing. However, field date and customer feedback reveals actual mean time between service calls of 10 years. Recent competitor claims of long service life are speculative and based on laboratory testing. No field data supports those claims. Finally, there must be differentiation between the terms service life and design life. Zero preventative maintenance is required and recommended by E/One. In nearly all case, the service life or interval is the point at which the wearing items may need to be replaced. After interval under normal conditions of an E/One pump is 10 years. The design life may represent the point at which a repair is no longer financially advisable. Under most conditions the design life of an E/One pump is expected to be 25 years. Flow Rates to Treatment There is a definite relationship between pump flow rate and the ability of the storage tank to handle peak inflows. The graph on the right illustrates this relationship for a typical grinder pump station with a nominal 227 litre capacity normally used for a single family residence. The curve marked Q o = 9 and Q o = 15 relate the inflow rate to the time available from pump turn on to overflow. The straight line summarizes thousands of test points taken from two different studies reported in the ASCE Pressure Sewer Project. These define the maximum duration of peak inflow rates from single family homes. For example, with a pump out rate of 9-gpm, inflow at a rate of 15-gmp can take place continuously for 10 minutes before the storage volume is filled.

7 ENGINEERED TO DO ONE JOB PERFECTLY At the heart of the E/One Sewer System is the toughest, hardworking pump in the industry. The new standard in excellence, durability, and longevity, the E/One Extreme Series grinder pump. Its evolution reflects everything we ve learned in more than 40 years as the originator and leader in the category of low pressure sewer systems. The pumps incorporate the grinder pump, motor controls and level sensing device integrated into a compact unit, easily removable for servicing when necessary. And, the geometry of the pump not only produces a near-vertical pump curve, but allows passage of the ground solids without clogging. Because of the low rpm and highest quality components, we experience the lowest service call rate in the industry. An average mean time of 10 years between service calls is typical. The progress in gravity pump itself is based on the Moineau principle. A rotor turns within a stator, creating a sequence of sealed chambers. The precision-cast and polished stainless steel rotor moves wastewater through these chambers at a nearly constant flow, over a wide range of conditions - from negative to abnormally high heads. Turning at just 1450 rpm, the 0.75 kilowatt motor can pump fluid through more than 3km of small-diameter piping or elevation changes of over 56 meters. The new alarm panels can be configured to provide functions arranging from basic alarm indication to advanced warning of pending service requirements. In between, there are numerous features available including a start counter; run-time meter; service disconnect capability; and remote alarm indication. Adding the Protect option to the E/One Sentry panel provides a Trouble indication and shuts down the pump/core temporarily in the event of an unacceptable operating condition. The pump/core will automatically return to Normal operation when the condition is resolved. The Protect feature provides monitoring of: Brownout conditions with the electrical power supply System over-pressure condition such as with a closed valve. Run-dry operation of pump/core.
