7 A Pollution Control Contractor, at an EPA Super Fund Site (Syracuse, New York) used SW1000 for cleaning and degreasing 60 above ground storage tanks containing various types and consistencies of hydrocarbon-based materials. The results: 1. SW1000 rendered the tanks gas-free and without contaminants or residue. 2. SW1000 was separated from the sludge material and then permitted by the local sewage authority to be released into their sewage system.

8 SW1000 was used in a sludge removal process at one of the largest oil Refineries on the east coast. Results: SW1000 turned 15 year old heavy sludge into a workable slurry. SW1000 increased the yield of usable oil by over 9%. SW1000 was used in the final packaging and disposal process of the waste material. Conclusion: SW1000 significantly impacted the entire procedure by reducing man hours and increasing the yield of usable oil per million gallon of sludge.

9 Laboratory testing revealed contaminants containing 90,000 ppm PCBs (polychlorinated biphenols) were reduced to a non-detectable level after washing with SW1000. SW1000 was then successfully used to clean a facility in Massena, NY which had to be decontaminated due to unacceptable levels of PCBs. The facility was deemed safe after using SW1000 and there was no hazardous waste.

10 United States Navy-Staten Island Detachment Since its inception, this facility had been using a Zep product, Dana Blue, in a 500 gallon dip tank for the purpose of degreasing engine parts, cylinder heads, etc. The product was a straight solvent, 100% petroleum based, combustible, had irritable vapors and had a flash point of approximately 100 degrees F. It carried the typical use and disposal warnings such as: Effects of overexposure may result in irritations to the eyes and respiratory tract, may cause headaches and dizziness, and may have other central nervous system effects INCLUDING DEATH. Product has a low order of acute oral and dermal toxicity, but minute amounts aspirated into the lungs during ingestion or vomiting may cause mild to severe pulmonary injury and POSSIBLY DEATH.

11 Dana Blue was used full strength (undiluted) requiring approximately ten 55 gallon drums to fill the dip tank. Results: 1. The entire contents of the dip tank (500 gallons) was considered hazardous waste and therefore had to be disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations. 2. The Navy had to secure a daily/weekly emissions permit (as required by the State of New York) to allow use of the tank. 3. Storage of additional material required special permits. 4. Storage and disposal of empty drums required special attention as stated in the MSDS Empty containers retain residue (liquid and/or vapor) and can be dangerous. They may explode and cause INJURY OR DEATH.

12 SW1000 was tested against Dana Blue using the recommended dilution: two 55 gallon drums to approximately 400 gallons of water Results: 1. It required 80% more product using Dana Blue as opposed to SW There were no major health hazards to handlers using SW No special permits were required for use or storage of SW SW1000 s performance in degreasing parts was superior in results and proven to be substantially more economical.

13 SW1000 has the ability to disperse oil in water without sinking the oil into the water column. The product is ideal for oil spills because of the interaction with the hydrocarbon molecule that inhibits the ability of the oil to stay in mass. SW1000 allows for the natural degradation process to overtake the oil spill without causing additional damage to marine life below the water s surface.

14 SW1000 has fire fighting capabilities. When educted as a foam, the product will have the ability to distinguish fires. Specifically: oil, alcohol and chemical fueled fires

15 Petroleum Based Degreasers The Exxon product Varsol 18 is typical of the competitive petroleum type degreasers. The Material Safety Data Sheets detailing use and health warnings are virtually the same with any degreaser in this category. Petroleum based products usually have a flash point of less than 100 degrees. These types of degreasers pose health and environmental hazards. There is high toxicity risk including death and they have a high degree of environmental contamination.

16 Water Based Alkaline Degreasers Unless these products have a high percentage of alkali material, they tend to be inefficient. In addition, many water based degreasers contain butyl cellosolve, a known carcinogen or other compounds considered to be hazardous to humans and the environment.
