3 About the EUP Regional Planning & Development Commission Created by legislation in 1968 Governed by a 20 member board Technical Assistance/Services provided to Cities, Townships, Villages and Non-Profits in Chippewa, Luce and Mackinac Counties Located in Sault Ste. Marie, MI

6 BACKGROUND Committee formed of interested stakeholders in Luce/Mackinac County to assist in the development of a proposal for funding ( 06 not funded). Grant was written to USDA Rural Development for Solid Waste Planning Funds in December Proposal focuses on education and outreach in Luce and Mackinac County s of the EUP. Grant Award of $48,000 announced in August Grant period October 1, 2008 thru December 30, 2009.

7 Project tasks: 1. Develop education/outreach materials. 2. Give school district and community level presentations on recycling. 3. Review exit surveys from presentations. 4. Compile final close-out report.

12 IT S A BUNCH OF GARBAGE Per person, per day, in the U.S.: 1960: 2.7 lbs. Today: 4.6 lbs.

13 That s 1.4 billion lbs. per day But is it really garbage?

20 REDUCE: our first (and best) line of action Use less stuff be frugal buy durable things buy in bulk, and watch packaging look for designs that use less material, last longer, and are reusable

21 Use durable coffee mugs. Use cloth napkins and towels. Refill bottles. Donate old magazines or surplus equipment. Reuse boxes. Turn empty jars into containers for leftover food. Purchase things second-hand whenever you can REUSE Fix things that break rather than buying new (even if it s cheaper ) Donate items to charity or sell them Participate in a paint collection and reuse program.

22 RECYCLE makes use of valuable resources environmental, financial and social benefits of the 251 million tons of solid waste collected in 2006, 82 million tons were recycled (and composted) one of the best environmental success stories in recent history

30 Reduced energy use means reductions in greenhouse gases We can t afford NOT to recycle EXAMPLE: If an office building with 7000 workers that recycle all of their paper for one year, the carbon savings is equivalent to taking 400 cars off the road

31 Economic Benefits The recycling industry generates over $230 billion annually in the U.S. Recycling creates 4 jobs for every 1 job created in waste management and disposal Over 1.1 million U.S. jobs

36 Cedarville Recycling Drop-Off Site All plastics, glass, tin and aluminum, cardboard (Corrugated), glossy and news print, and all dry cell batteries. No paraffin covered cardboard! No liner board! (without corrugated) No plate glass, e.g. window or picture frame! No Lead Acid batteries! No scrap metal! No electronics! No foam of any sort especially from packaging! No paint or hazardous material dry or liquid! And obviously, No trash of any sort!
