TestBeam First CMS combined Ecal + Hcal testbeam with real Ecal supermodule, in the testbeam 2004 the response was measured using a prototype Ecal module (7x7 crystals, PMT readout). - much improved beamline was commissioned, which provides various types of particles in the momentum range from GeV/c : VLE: Very Low Energy beamline 1-9 GeV/c h- h+ e- e+ using tertiary target and special beam optics particle ID: using TOFs, Cherenkovs and large scintillation counters, we are able to tag (anti-)protons, kaons, pions, electrons and muons. - Data-sets collected include: Calibration data (e, muons and source), Energy scans, Crack studies, Longitudinal shower profiles, etc - Running was completed 19 th of September, results shown here are very preliminary first results, the analyses are still ongoing. Siena 2006 Lisa Berntzon 3

CMS geometry at H2 A phi slice of CMS HCAL: HO - HB: 2 wedges 8 φ segments Δφ = 40deg. HB HE -HE: 4 φ segments Δφ = 20 deg. - HO: Ring 0, 1 and 2. beam pivot ECAL: 1 SuperModule (SM9) Pivot of table, makes possible to mimic Interaction Point at LHC Siena 2006 Lisa Berntzon 5
Beamline VLE-beamline Very Low Energy (VLE) line is able to provide 1 to 9 GeV/c h+, h- and e+/ewith good rate, a few hundred/spill using a tertiary target (T22). Particle ID is accomplished by TOFs, CKs and muon veto counters. High energy line covers a momentum range from: -10 to 300 GeV/c for hadrons -10 to 150 GeV/c for e-/e+, through secondary particle production. This beam line is unique, and is well-suited for calorimetry Siena 2006 Lisa Berntzon 6
Cuts for beam cleaning (Removing Interaction in beam line) We require a single particle in the scintillating counters: S1 and S4 (14x14 cm 2 ) S2 (4x4 cm 2 ) S3 (2x2 cm 2 ). R29973, 4 GeV π+ Beam particles at large angles are removed using beam halo (BH) counters (7x7cm 2 square) Siena 2006 Lisa Berntzon 7
Particle ID Muon Veto Cherenkovs electrons: CK2 for p<9gev, CK3 for p<3gev muons: Muon Veto front/back, Muon Veto Wall protons: CK3 (off) and TOF for 1-9GeV kaon: TOF for p<4gev and CK3 (off) & not-proton pion: rest. Siena 2006 Lisa Berntzon 8
Particle ID -TOFs Siena 2006 Lisa Berntzon 9
VLE beam cleanup In TB2004 there was a large number of beam particles interacting in the beam line and creating junk events around (0,0). This was a major source of systematic error and prevented the analyses of data below 5 GeV. In TB2006 the beam line interactions were successfully removed by single hit requirement, and the lowest energy point was extended to 1GeV. TB04 TB06 TB06 Preliminary Many junk events No more junk Siena 2006 Lisa Berntzon 10
5 GeV pi+ : After beam cleaning and paricle ID cuts, 1/3 of the events remain, pure pion events. Siena 2006 Lisa Berntzon 11

Reconstructed Ecal, Hcal response TB06 Preliminary GEANT4 For the first time, we have a complete set of low energy data for pions, kaons and (anti)protons for the combined ECAL+HCAL. These data are essential to correctly estimate the jet response of the CMS calorimeter system. Siena 2006 Lisa Berntzon 16
