GLOSSARY We have Beam Position Monitors BPM1 and BPM2 CKOV A and B TOF0 TOF1 TOF2 Spectrometer solenoids 1 and 2 (In order of appearance in the MICE hall) within these: matching coils correction coils and main coil (?) Tracker 1 and 2 (ibid) inside SS1 and SS2 An Electron-Muon Calorimeter (EMCal) consisting of the KL plane and the ElectronMuonRanger Etc There is no logic, just history. 2
Coupling Coils 1&2 Spectrometer solenoid 2 Spectrometer solenoid 1 Focus coils 1 Focus coils 2 Focus coils 3 Matching coils 1&2 Correcting coils 1&2 µ Beam PID BPM1 BPM2 TOF 0 CKOVA CKOVB TOF 1 Variable Diffuser Incoming muon beam RF cavities 1 RF cavities 2 Liquid Hydrogen absorbers 1,2,3 Trackers 1 & 2 measurement of emittance in and out Downstream TOF 2 particle ID: EMCal = KL + EMR 3
Goals of CM23 >> review overall MICE status -- what have we achieved in 2008? -- do we understand it all? >> near future -- target plan -- decay solenoid repair plan -- spectrometer solenoid schedule, tracker installation -- review overall MICE plan for 2009 no beam in MICE until May09 We have to do the work or we will not be ready in May09! WE MUST be ready in May. -- How do we run MICE, store the data and analyse them >> construction for cooling channel -- AFC module -- RFCC module -- infrastructure >> after MICE -- MANX proposal -- MICE internal MANX review 4
Preset questions Q should we install the tracker in the hall and take muon data before installing it in SSI? >> pros: ++ integrate the system in DAQ and controls -- this can actually be done with the tracker in Lab7 ++ take emittance data and check alignment -- acceptance of tracker without field is not much (see only core of small beam) -- TOF0+TOF1 can do it already >> cons: -- Tracker will NOT be permitted to move in hall until hall is clean -- Risk of damaging the tracker is not small -- alignment system is not foreseen for this particular configuration >> UNLESS SSI IS VERY LATE (no stepii in 2009?) THIS SEEMS LIKE ANOTHER INVENTION TO WASTE TIME 5
Preset questions Q Should we build a dedicated MICE luminosity monitor? >> Pros & cons: ++ normalize the production from MICE target for purpose of optimization and understanding of upstream beam line up to end of DS. -- can t this be done with the ISIS Beam Loss Monitors (BLM)? General conclusion: Neither pros and cons are quantified enough. This requires careful design (which does not exist) and more understanding of what the BLMs can do or cannot do. Ball is in the camp of proponents of MICELumiMonitor who should make a design and a reasonable plan. Meanwhile understanding the stability and systematic error associated with the BLMs will be pursued. 6
Preset questions how critical are the beam profile monitors BPMs? do they need particle-by-particle readout? The TOF detectors are now doing the job of beam profile and emittance measurement. We align the downstream beam line on them. (remember that the BPMs were conceived originally as interims if TOF was late) BPM1 remains very useful to provide profile and some particle count at the exit of DecaySolenoid. Questions remain: how reliable is the counting? How can we get time stamp? Do we understand what we count? Proposed conclusion: -- Leave GVA1 in the beam for now. -- Study present BPMs as they are. -- Higher Priority to 1) Tracker and 2) EMR. 7
Preset questions MICE Target design We MUST have a target working in ISIS iby May or else stepi is lost Proposal is to have essentially (improved) present design with cylindrical tube shaft dipping directly in the beam -- no target head. This should work. It is important that this is ready for running in May This means two target systems built by end of march. SCHEDULE IS VERY TIGHT.. THIS IS THE FIRST PRIORITY. On a longer term the proposed design allows for modification involving a target head of better shape or material IFF one solution can be found that gives for sure a better ratio of pion production to beam loss. Simulations, calculations going on. Outcome of simulation should also be better understanding of where dedicated collimation/shielding in ISIS may help. 8
Preset questions How do we run MICE? Many questions to MICE! Some pertinent to online group Some pertinent to MICE Operations Some pertinent to all of MICE -- ONLINE group will come to a proposal for >> organization of control room >> in-situ control of the experiment, monitoring of equipment, >> recording of configurations and EPICS readings >> online monitoring and reconstruction to allow assessment of data quality >> dispatch/relation of information between data stream and data base NEED RUN TABLE allowing run selection, indicating configuration and quality Part of this info should appear already at level of run plans. MICO meeting (chaired by Project Manager with assistance of MOM) is the place to discuss needs, solutions, implementation. (among other things) But beamline + physics + software groups should be involved. 9
How do we run MICE? Availability of experts is important NO MICE SUBSYSTEM SHOULD BE LEFT UNATTENTED -- each subsystem should have one means of contact (phone number) that answers -- critical subsystems should be covered physically (cold SC magnets) A list of critical subsystems is needed. -- this is especially important when we run or prepare for running. Two efforts: MICE phone book is being prepared (Torun) Groups responsible for subsystems are requested to provide information. 10
How do we run MICE? Documentation and clear operating instructions are essential. Much progress on documentation (but job is never finished!) Preparing shifters checklist MOM rotation is organized Shifters will be needed starting in May. Safety in the hall is of paramount importance and should take overbearing priority. Get trained and informed. Because you have a vague feeling that not every safety rule is presently optimal does not mean they should not be followed! 11
MICE SCHEDULE New info at this meeting PHASE I 1. Spectrometer solenoid I still to be cooled and tested IFF this is successful can be shipped end Feb09 2. Decay solenoid repair plan not ready yet. Digesting info. 3. Target construction plan going on. Tight schedule! 4. Upstream detectors are ready (calibration for TOF1 still to be complete) 5. TOF2 and tracker will be ready (this represents quite some work still!) 6. EMR design is ready and blessing by the TB to go ahead. 12
2009 operations: Fix decay solenoid new target: build test install SSI complete test measure ship Off beam: Install SSI with diffuser tracker, tofi and TOFII On beam: run STEP I Roll SSI on beam run STEP II Install SSII with tracker, TOFII, KL on beam: run STEPII run STEP III 13
MICE SCHEDULE For Phase II 1 Absorbers bodies are being produced at MIRAPRO (near KEK) But how to test them once at RAL in summer09? Issue of controls! Liquid H2 system will become needed soon 2. Windows will be produced at Mississipi 3. Focus coil production on-going (delivery date Jan10) 4. RFCC module production started (tenders) coupling coils at Harbin -- some delays have occurred 5. RF power stations: CERN amplifier has been delivered refurbishing ongoing at DL 6, RF infrastructure in MICE hall we know that this will be a large amount of work but fear that it is not sufficiently funded. 14
µ MICE Schedule as of December 2008 STEP I Repair DKsol Q1 09 Run May09 STEP II Deliv SSI Apr09 Run July09 End April End July STEP III/III.1 Deliv SSII Jul09 Run Nov09 - Mar10 STEP IV Deliv FCI Dec09 Jan10 Run May10 STEP V RFCCI deliv Apr10 Run Sep10 RF infrastructure? STEP VI RFCC deliv Q Run May2011 UK proposal in Dec09 15
MICE schedule should be Realistic Coherent. It is updated typically 3 times a year with input from collaboration meetings We maintain the official aspirational MICE schedule on the MICE web page. Please use this for talks, wite-ups etc.. Beware of imitations. 16
Software and Analysis It is a fantastic pleasure to see software and analysis on REAL DATA! We seem to have gotten first identiied muon beam and first x-x beam profiles. (so far only x-y) TOF calibrations and resolutions as expected. Cosmics tests of tarcker in good shape and ~ within specs. KL and CKOV analysis in progress simulation jobs running everyday 10 UK sites + Sofia support G4MICE! We will soon enter production mode and bookkeeping will become an issue! Please dont forget to contribute service tasks! 17
We should make sure that all the data we take lead to a MICE note. This will require some chasing around to do as this was not the case since october. Detectors should study and request the running they will need for calibration purposes! Please attend MICO meetings! 18

And while we enjoyed Harbin work continued at RAL! Construction of the beam stop inside the vault 25
Conclusions Look back a year ago. See a difference? MICE IS A RUNNING EXPERIMENT! Still schedule has slipped considerably. Goal of 2009 is to put a big dent into step III and begin to address systematic errors. + Publishable physics results. 26
Congratulations to all MICE for the hard and excellent work Its all difficult but progress is there and exciting. Many thanks to Derun LI and Mike ZISMAN for the organization of the scientific program -- we had excellent discussions! Many thanks to the local organizers Shixian ZHENG, Li WANG, Yuemei WANG and collaborators for the excellent organization of the workshop We had everything we needed and some more Lets get many muons and emittances in 2009, and a cooling channel in 2010! 27
