2 Munro Group Monitoring the World Around us Since 1864 Munro Environmental - Air Sampling and Monitoring The air we breathe is composed of Nitrogen (78%), Oxygen (21%), Argon (0.9%) and Carbon Dioxide (0.03%) plus many other gases, vapours, mists, dusts and living organisms in minute amounts. These additional materials may be naturally occurring or produced by man. Sources include industry, transport, agriculture, power generation, combustion, incineration, respiration, the weather and volcanic activity. Material also comes from extraterrestrial sources, meteorites and comets entering the atmosphere. Many of these materials are completely benign or may be beneficial to life. However, some materials can be hazardous to health or the environment at even the smallest measurable concentrations. Where appropriate, government agencies have established ceiling values and guidance limit values for concentrations of gases, vapours, mists, radionucleides and dusts in the workplace and the environment. In order to make an assessment of the concentration of these materials in the atmosphere, a sample is taken from the air for analysis. The taking of the sample is a fundamental part of the analysis process. The sample must be accurate, representative and collected in a way that will maintain the condition of the sample until it is analysed. The airborne concentration is calculated from the analytical result and the volume of the air sampled. Therefore it is important that the air flow rate and sample time are recorded with the appropriate accuracy. Most air samplers incorporate an airflow sensor or control mechanism and a clock to provide the user with this data. The wide variety of materials and applications that may be sampled call for many different air sampler configurations. Munro Environmental air samplers can draw from 5 millilitres per minute to 100 litres per minute or more through a wide variety of sampling media including glass fibre and cellulose filters for dusts and activated carbon for gases and vapours. In some situations, air pollution studies and walk-through surveys, a dust measurement must be made instantaneously. The direct reading dust monitors supplied by Munro Environmental are used to record variations in concentration in real-time for such applications. While hourly averages calculated from this data may be suitable for some applications, readings taken every second can be reported if required. The instruments manufactured by Munro Environmental at our factory in east London are supplied alongside other quality environmental monitoring instruments made in the UK and elsewhere. Real Time Dust Monitors LN Series - The three dust monitors all analyse airborne particles in the same way. A Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) inlet allows all inhalable particles to enter the instrument. The airstream is illuminated by a laser and the diffracted light is detected and analysed. The concentration of particles is calculated according to several size conventions simultaneously either in workplace mode to give Inhalable, Thoracic and Respirable conventions, or environmental mode when TSP, PM 10 (Particulate Matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than 10 microns), PM 2.5 and PM 1.0 values are reported. Accurate measurements of airborne dust concentrations are available within 2 minutes of turning on the power. A data storage interval can be set from one second to one hour meaning that data can be generated for a wide range of monitoring applications, from brief assessments of short term peaks to long term monitoring showing seasonal and annual variations of dust concentrations. Data transfer and analysis is made using AirQ software, setup to use a direct connection or modem using a mobile phone service. The LN Dust Monitors are designed and built in the UK for Munro by Turnkey Instruments. 1

3 Real Time Dust Monitoring Systems The health effects of exposure to dusty and polluted atmospheres, at home, at work and in the street are of increasing concern. People are breathing air pollutants from transport, industry and the environment wherever they go. Health, Safety and Environmental professionals need data that identifies the size of the particles and the time when an exposure occurred to assess the level of the hazard and pinpoint the source. Accurate, sensitive and portable instruments are an essential part of the assessment equipment. LN Dust Monitors The Munro Environmental LN Dust Monitors use a Laser Nephelometer to measure the concentration of airborne particles. Ambient air is drawn continuously through a sensing chamber and illuminated by a laser. The diffracted light reaches a photoreceptor in a narrow angular range. This signal is processed to give a result that is correlated with the atmospheric mass concentration and particle size. These air monitoring units can be used to assess Total Suspended Particulate (TSP), PM 10, PM2.5 and PM 1.0 concentrations in ambient air and the Inhalable, Thoracic or Respirable dust fractions (defined by EN 481) in workplace atmospheres. The detection method is virtually unaffected by variations in particle composition and therefore gives excellent correlation with reference methods. 4 Portable Dust Monitoring LN5 A battery-powered, portable unit which can also be configured for longterm unattended operation. By adding a weather-proof enclosure, heavyduty battery or generator power supply, heated inlet, cellular modem and meteorological sensors a comprehensive environmental monitoring system can be installed at any secure remote location and the data collected daily without the need for a site visit. This flexibility means the LN5 is suitable for both brief surveys, for example during demolition work, as well as extended studies of airborne dust concentrations. Hand Held Dust Monitor LN10 A hand-held battery powered unit, suitable for "walkthrough" surveys. Dust concentration data can be displayed and recorded every second if necessary to demonstrate changes as they occur. An occupational hygienist can identify the cause of peak concentrations and verify the effect of changes to procedures or ventilation. The LN10 runs for 4 hours from the battery pack. Fixed Dust Monitor LN15 Designed for permanent installation, a 12V supply and compact design means that one person can easily relocate the unit when required. By adding additional sensors and a modem connection comprehensive environmental data can be collected on-line without the need for a site visit. 5 Instrument Control and Data Processing AirQ Software An essential part of an air monitoring system, and the user interface with the instruments. All of the registered LN sensors owned by a user can connect to AirQ software. Setting up the instrument and uploading of stored data is straightforward using a Control Panel window. When using LN5 and LN15 monitors connected to a modem, data can be polled automatically at night from the outstations. An LN15 monitor may be recording TSP, PM 10, PM 2.5 and PM 1.0 average values plus wind speed and direction every 15 minutes, that is 576 readings per day, almost a quarter of a million per year. A perimeter monitoring network could have four or more monitors and managing this data is a task best carried out daily. The reporting software can be used to analyse and graph this data as well as export to other database and spreadsheet applications. Using AirQ an operator can produce a graph of dust concentration data showing several parameters simultaneously for a single instrument or compare concentration data from different locations. The trace below shows 48 hours of data from an LN15. Service, Calibration and Maintenance Installed monitors run all the time while portable instruments may run for just a few hours a week. Whatever the application support is available to keep your instruments running reliably and accurately.
