THE CLEAN SOLUTION There is now an affordable, ecologically sound alternative septic system available to replace the leach field currently required for both residential and commercial developments. Developed in Jaffrey, N.H. by WASTEWATER ALTERNATIVES INC. THE CLEAN SOLUTION accomplishes the biological functions of a leach field in a BioCon TM tank the size of a septic tank. The discharge is a treated, odorless liquid, which is cleaner than typical treated municipal sewage. Since the effluent is almost as clear as rainwater, it can be dispersed into the ground via a dispersal field that is 5-10% the size of a conventional leach field. THE CLEAN SOLUTION is widely used in NH and ME with applications pending in the other New England states. Systems range in capacity from a single home to large residential and commercial systems treating flows 100 times greater than that from a house. In the typical CLEAN SOLUTION application, the effluent from the septic tank flows into the BioCon tank. This tank contains media that provides an extended surface contact area for the bacteria to collect and a continuously operating air pump that provides oxygen to treat the effluent. The output from the BioCon flows by gravity into a settling tank where remaining sludge is settled, and the clear liquid either flows by gravity or is pumped to the dispersal field. The attached drawings and specifications provide details on a few CLEAN SOLUTION models. Custom system designs are available for specific large and/or difficult applications. WHEN TO USE THE CLEAN SOLUTION SYSTEM Designed specifically to be used when an on-site septic system is required. THE CLEAN SOLUTION is particularly effective on expensive or difficult lots whether it s a single house or a 100-unit condominium. THE CLEAN SOLUTION has been used for homes on water, lots with high water tables, ledge, small lots, housing and condominium developments, as well as commercial developments such as office complexes, restaurants and golf courses. THE CLEAN SOLUTION SYSTEM is an affordable, completely in-ground system that is ideal for failed systems or new installations. ADVANTAGES OF THE CLEAN SOLUTION SYSTEM Environment friendly THE CLEAN SOLUTION, a tank or series of tanks, which are installed after the septic tank, provides the same aerobic treatment that a leach field is supposed to. This means only a small field is required to disperse the clean, odorless water into the ground. User friendly Simple - the only moving part is the air pump Garbage disposer and dish washer compatible Accommodates residential seasonal flows, low flows, peak flows and commercial flows Landscape friendly - tanks in ground, no unsightly candy canes, vents or large raised fields Low operating costs. The air pump only uses electricity equivalent to an 80-watt light bulb. Dispersal field - no leach field Since the BioCon tank provides better treatment than a leach field, only a small dispersal field is required. A field as small as 3' wide x 25' long can meet the disposal needs of a single house. This is less than 10% of the area of a conventional leach field. Low maintenance In most applications, maintenance is required approximately every 2 1/2 years. Maintenance consists mainly of pumping the septic and settling tanks, checking the air pump, and inspecting the system. Community Developments Grouping units to utilize larger CLEAN SOLUTION SYSTEMS, in conjunction with the smaller dispersal field, can substantially reduce cost. The larger systems also permit better land use and can result in additional lots becoming available. THE CLEAN SOLUTION SYSTEM An Alternative Septic System 1

TEST RESULTS In addition to the creativity that THE CLEAN SOLUTION gives designers to fit systems into the natural setting and to reduce impact to natural buffers, THE CLEAN SOLUTION reduces BOD and TSS below 30 mg/l, and in most residential project the results are in the single digits. THE CLEAN SOLUTION system is being tested at the Massachusetts Alternative Septic Testing Center located at Otis Air National Guard Base on Cape Cod. A measured 550 gal/day from the base facilities are metered into the system each day. Over the first 4- month period the results averaged 5.2 mg/l BOD, 3.1.mg/l TSS, levels much superior to municipal plants, which typically operate at 30mg/l for both BOD and TSS. MAINTENANCE The following maintenance is required for typical home applications: It is the owner s responsibility to see that this maintenance is performed. 1. Pump out the settling/pump and septic tank every 2-3 years. This is the most critical maintenance item. 2. Check to be sure the compressor is operating monthly. This inspection is as simple as feeling the air line. If the air line is warm compressor is working. If the air line is cold, further inspection is necessary. First check that the compressor is plugged in. Second, check that circuit breaker has not been tripped. Call WAI if this has not corrected the problem. The compressors typically run 5-8 years continuously. A new compressor can be purchased from WAI. 3. Have WAI inspect the air system in the tank every 4years. 4. Above all, call with any questions or problems. 5. Following the above schedule will fulfill your obligations to maintain your warranty. Maintenance for large systems will be specified as part of our quotation COMPREHENSIVE WARRANTY For a period of 2 years, WAI will warrant the system and repair any malfunction, including parts and labor, at no cost to you. Your responsibility during this period is to perform the required maintenance and to notify WAI of any failure. THE CLEAN SOLUTION SYSTEM An Alternative Septic System 2

THEORY of THE CLEAN SOLUTION Conventional small to mid- size sewage systems normally use a septic tank followed by a leach field to first provide anaerobic (without air) and then aerobic (with air) treatment of the effluent. Septic tanks work well for capturing and digesting the solids, which are anaerobically fermented over a long period of time, dissolving the solids into the liquid waste. However, a septic tank is not designed to treat the contaminants that dissolve in the liquids. These are treated aerobically in the leach field. Municipal systems, which handle very large volumes of wastes, use much different equipment to accomplish the same biological functions: primary sedimentation tanks remove solids, and a subsequent aerobic system treats the contaminants dissolved in the liquids. Settled solids are removed from municipal primary and secondary facilities for further treatment. All aerobic treatment systems, whether a conventional leach field, a municipal treatment plant, or THE CLEAN SOLUTION, depend on bacteria to purify the effluent from a solids settling system. In order for bacteria to reproduce, they require energy (food) and air. By using the contaminants in the effluent as food and atmospheric air, the bacteria metabolize the dissolved solids to carbon dioxide, water and sludge (colonies of bacteria). The aerobic bacteria also convert ammonia compounds to nitrates. A large number of bacteria need to come in contact with the food sources in order to purify an effluent. Treatment systems utilize different methods to provide the large necessary population. A municipal system mechanically stirs up the bacteria in the secondary treatment process so that they will contact their food and not settle out of the effluent. In a leach field, the sludge (biomat) that forms at the ground interface is a large colony of bacteria through which the dissolved solid stream flows. In THE CLEAN SOLUTION the bacteria collect in a thin film on the plastic media in WAI'S proprietary BioCon biological contactor, and the effluent is recirculated over them several times. THE CLEAN SOLUTION uses the same biological process as a municipal secondary treatment plant using the activated sludge process. Solids are settled out, and air is added for bacteria respiration in the BioCon. This allows the bacteria to convert the carbonaceous dissolved solids to carbon dioxide, water and sludge and the urea and ammonia to nitrates and sludge. The sludge created is settled for periodic removal from the system, and a clean, odorless effluent is discharged to the dispersal field. The major difference between a septic system and THE CLEAN SOLUTION is where the bacteria (sludge) collect. In a conventional system, the sludge forms in the bottom of the leach field and restricts the effluent flow enough so that the bacteria has time to act, This flow rate through the sludge determines the required field size. In THE CLEAN SOLUTION, the sludge is formed in the BioCon, and a clean effluent is discharged to the dispersal field. This field can be very small because there is no need for it to provide further treatment. THE CLEAN SOLUTION An Alternative Septic System 3

SIMPLIFIED OPERATIONAL SCHEMATIC OF IN-GROUND AEROBIC TREATMENT SYSTEMS Conventional System Septic Tank an Anaerobic treatment System The Leach Field an Aerobic Treatment System settles solids & breaks them down into dissolved solids partially treated effluent air flows through the ground biomat - a layer of bacteria clear water flow rate determined by biomat 0.3 gal/ ft 2 -day THE CLEAN SOLUTION System Septic Tank an Anaerobic treatment System THE CLEAN SOLUTION an Aerobic Treatment System air from compressor Dispersal Field settles solids & breaks them down into dissolved solids partially treated effluent clear water plastic media - biofilm (bacteria) forms on surface does no treatment clear water flow rate determined by percolation rate gal/ ft 2 -day In all aerobic treatment systems, bacteria does the cleansing of the effluent by using the carbon sources as food and air for oxidization thereby producing carbon dioxide, water and more bacteria. You see groups of this new bacteria as biomat or sludge. THE CLEAN SOLUTION performs exactly the same functions as the leach field - except it accomplishes them mechanically in a tank. The square footage of plastic media in THE CLEAN SOLUTION actually exceeds the square footage of a leach field for the same flow. Since THE CLEAN SOLUTION discharges clear water, just like the bottom of a leach field, the only purpose of the dispersal field is to disperse it into the ground for final pathogen removal. 7 WHY USE THE CLEAN SOLUTION SYSTEM? COST EFFECTIVE - REDUCED FIELD SIZE o With the increased cost of materials and the difficulty of obtaining quality septic sand and washed stone, designers, installers and developers are seeing THE CLEAN SOLUTION system as the best alternative. With a dispersal area over 90% smaller than a conventional field, money is saved on land clearing, grubbing, transporting fill material, and labor to construct a leach bed that meets NHDES square foot requirements. These savings offset the cost of THE CLEAN SOLUTION SYSTEM, often reducing the overall cost of the septic system to the homeowner. USE ANY FIELD DESIGN o THE CLEAN SOLUTION dispersal field can be constructed using any of the approved field technologies, both proprietary and conventional pipe and stone. When using a proprietary field product, the existing field size is determined by the overall footprint (length x width) of THE CLEAN SOLUTION s dispersal field. ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY o o Local and State Land Use Boards are becoming more aware and concerned with the impacts that developments have on our natural resources, including groundwater and sensitive areas. THE CLEAN SOLUTION System produces an effluent quality well above what is considered the acceptable standard, while reducing the overall landscape impacts. With a dispersal field up to 90% smaller than a conventional field, designers, engineers, and site evaluators have increased options for a design that fits into the natural settings of each lot. The reduced size allows the designer to keep trees, rocks and other natural features undisturbed. DEVELOPMENTS o o o In a cluster development, THE CLEAN SOLUTION can reduce the overall project cost by connecting two to four (or more) homes to one system. To maximize the cost efficiency, the engineer must weight the costs of the additional infrastructure required for effluent collection with the savings from using larger CLEAN SOLUTION SYSTEMS to determine the appropriate size of each clustered system. THE CLEAN SOLUTION is also very effective in new developments where land costs are high. Minimizing the area needed for the leach field may result in the creation of additional building sites. WAI has provided systems capable of handling over 100 houses. We are available to work with the designers and engineers on large cluster developments. SUMMARY o THE CLEAN SOLUTION is the best alternative when proposing a new development where land costs are high and minimizing the area needed for leach fields may result in additional building sites. It is equally effective in environmentally sensitive areas such as wetlands or water bodies. THE CLEAN SOLUTION will help to offset rising field and land costs. The entire WAI staff has experience in all phases of development from conceptual layout through permitting and construction. Please call and have one of our staff members work with you to see if your client could benefit from using this system. THE CLEAN SOLUTION An Alternative Septic System 6

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT SINGLE HOUSE CLEAN SOLUTION SYSTEMS Does the system need a real leach field? The dispersal field is constructed the same as a conventional field but is much smaller. Since The Clean Solution performs the same biological functions as a leach field there is nothing left to treat in the field. The purpose of the dispersal field is to put clear water into the ground. Can I use other proprietary devices in place of a pipe and stone field? Yes. Any approved stone replacement system is acceptable. However there are some options that would not prove cost effective, but are still compatible with the Clean Solution. How do you size chambers or tubes? The tubes are sized based on the field print conversion using the total footprint of the field and then judging how many tubes or chambers would be used for that space. How do you vent the field of the Clean Solution? When you use THE CLEAN SOLUTION, the system is vented through the roof vent. Therefore a field vent is unnecessary. When using the system on an application without a roof vent, a vent must be installed at or near the tank. (i.e. a trailer park or camp ground must be vented at the tank) Are any additives required? No, the only thing that the Clean Solution needs to operate is air, which comes from the small mechanical air pump. Where does the air pump go? The air pump can go anywhere above the snow line, but the most ideal place for it is in a garage or basement. How much noise does the air pump make? The air compressor makes less noise than a refrigerator. How much electricity does the air pump require to run? The air pump requires only 80 watts and 1 amp - about the power required for a 80 watt light bulb. How often do I need to maintain the system? The system maintenance must be done once every 2.5 years. What does the maintenance consist of? Maintenance consists of a simple pump out of both the septic tank and the settling tank. A compression test is performed on the air pump and replaced if necessary, however, the air pumps typically last 5-8 years. What if I need to order replacement parts? WAI can be contacted for replacement parts. We will also handle any maintenance or repairs at direct costs. Is the system exempt from certain setback rules or to ground water tables? THE CLEAN SOLUTION has been known to achieve variances on replacement systems, but is not exempt from regular rules other than very significant reduction in field size. Do I need a sump pump? Only if it is necessary to pump the effluent to a raised dispersal field. Installed sump pumps are available as an option any further questions you may have to info@thecleansolution.com or call us at THE CLEAN SOLUTION An Alternative Septic System 7
