If you re anything like us, we hope you ll appreciate this our first ever research roundup. We searched and scoured for the newest information out there (and learned a lot while doing it!) We compiled what we think are the best studies pertaining to the world of work from the past quarter (January-March). 5 Deloitte This winter, Deloitte University Press released their annual Human Capital Trends Report. This year, a clear theme emerged: companies are seeing a need to completely redesign their organization amidst demographic, technological, and societal changes. 5

6 what matters to hr today Respondents were addressing these big picture changes and others by focusing on several emerging HR trends: rethinking organizational design, developing leadership, employer branding and culture, and people analytics. More than 50 percent of survey respondents stated they are trying to change their company culture in response to shifting talent markets and increased competition. 7 Society for Human Resource Management Society for Human Resource Management published survey findings this January on how HR professionals are using the rise of mobile and social media to recruit talent. 7

8 CAll me, beep me: job seekers are mobile Recruiting through social media is still growing, but most companies treat social media as an added method for recruiting, not as its only strategy. In 2011, 56 percent of employers used social media in their recruitment process. Today, 84 percent of employers do. LinkedIn is the most popular social media site for recruitment, Facebook is the second most popular, and Twitter is third. Why Organizations Use Social Media for Recruiting: 2/3 of organizations have taken steps to leverage mobile recruiting. 84% of organizations currently use social media for recruiting. Recruit passive job candidates who might not otherwise apply Increase employer brand and recognition Target job candidates with very specific skills Allow potential candidates to easily contact organization Target a specific job level to recruit or contact 82% 77% 71% 64% 61% 8

9 gallup Gallup regularly measures job creation across the United States in order to track high-growth areas and struggling regions. In March, Gallup released a report about which cities are booming and which cities aren t. 9

10 jobtopia, usa Orlando, FL led the nation in job creation for Much of Orlando s growth came from - yep, you guessed it - the leisure and hospitality sector. Other hot cities include Salt Lake City, UT; Austin, TX; Louisville, KY; and San Francisco, CA. Each of these metropolitan areas added a significant number of technology jobs last year. At the other end of the spectrum, Hartford, CT and Providence, RI ranked last for job creation. Both states have lost manufacturing jobs over the past few years. 11 careerbuilder In February 2016, CareerBuilder released a study they conducted with Harris Poll about gender equality in the workplace. The results weren t encouraging. 11

12 unfogging the glass ceiling Women s treatment in the workplace has been a hot topic for decades, and many companies are making big efforts to change the pay and leadership gaps in their workforces...but we still have a way to go. A study published this February by CareerBuilder showed that many workers and HR managers still report rampant inequality in the office, at every income level. 1 5 in HR managers admit that women at their companies earn less than men for the same work Earn less than $35,000 Earn $50,000 or more Earn $100,000 or more Women 47% 25% 5% men 23% 49% 14% Only select income ranges shown. 12

13 jobvite Jobvite released their annual job seeker study in March. They surveyed more than 2,000 Americans to see where they stand on issues like the economy, job security, and the workforce of the future. 13

14 job seekers are in the driver s seat Staying in the same job for 10 years is no longer the norm and today s professionals are keeping their options open when it comes to switching jobs: 74 percent of employees are open to a new role. More established professionals value compensation more than millennials do, while millennials are more interested in work from home options than older generations are. The interview process has the greatest impact on a job seeker s opinion of the job and the company, outweighing conversations with current employees, online research, and initial interactions with an employer. 74% of workers are satisfied with their jobs. what job seekers value most: Respondents checked all that applied. 62% 50% Compensation Location 51% of workers are satisifed, but open to a new job. 43% 43% 41% Opportunity for growth Health benefits Work/life balance 31% Flexibility to work from home 14

15 PEW RESEARCH CENTER Pew Research released this analysis in March. In it, Americans were surveyed about their predictions and thoughts on the future of work and the loss of jobs due to technology. 15

16 will the robots take our jobs? Two-thirds of Americans believe robots and computers will take over much of the work currently being done by humans. However, even as Americans expect more jobs to become automated, 80% believe their jobs are safe from becoming obsolete. 2/3 of Americans think it s likely that within 50 years, robots and computers will do much of the work currently done by people. yet 80% of Americans think their jobs will be safe from automation. 66% 16
