11 MSC-IF ACTIONS MAIN OBJECTIVES: To enhance the creative and innovative potential of researchers wishing to diversify their individual competence in terms of skill acquisition at multi- or interdisciplinary level through advanced training, international and inter-sectoral mobility. To provide opportunities to acquire new knowledge and to work on research projects in a European context (Member States and associated countries) or outside Europe and to support the reintegration of researchers currently outside Europe who have previously worked here. To develop (or help to restart) the careers of individual researchers that show great potential, considering their experience.

12 MSC-IF ACTIONS 3 MOBILITY TYPES 1. European Fellowships (IEF and IIF in FP7) (12-14 months in Member States or associated countries) 2. Global Fellowships (IOF in FP7) (12-24 month secondment to a Third Country + a mandatory 12 month period in Europe upon return) 3. Reintegration Fellowships (12-14 months in Member States or associated countries) NB - Possibility of secondments in private sectors

13 MSC-IF ACTIONS MAIN FEATURES Support is foreseen for individual, trans-national fellowships awarded to the best or most promising researchers for employment in Member States or associated countries, based on an application made jointly by the researcher and host organisation in the academic or non-academic sector. Fellows will play an active role in shaping their own training programme and professional development. Each researcher will establish, together with her/his personal supervisor in the host organisation, a Career Development Plan comprising his/her training needs (including transferable skills) and research objectives and will later report upon the progress towards these objectives..

14 MSC-IF ACTIONS EXPECTED IMPACT: Projects are expected to add significantly to the development of the best and most promising researchers in Europe, in order to enhance and maximise their contribution to the knowledge-based economy and society. The action will also strengthen the contact network of both the researcher and the host organisation. The fellowship will contribute to release the full potential of researchers and to catalyse significant development in their careers in both the academic and non-academic sectors.

15 MSC-IF ACTIONS ELIGIBILITY Researchers may be of any nationality. Global Fellowships are open to nationals or long-term residents of Member States and associated countries. Experienced researchers (i.e. in possession of a doctoral degree or with at least 4 years of full-time equivalent research experience at the time of the relevant deadline for submission). Mobility: researchers shall not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the deadline for submission of proposals. In the 'career restart' panel, researchers shall not have resided or carried out their main activity in the country of their host organisation for more than 3 years in the 5 years immediately prior to the relevant deadline for submission of proposals.

22 CRITERION 1 EXCELLENCE Quality, innovative aspects and credibility of the research (including inter/multidisciplinary aspects) Clear description of the state-of-the-art of the research topic Describe the appropriateness of the research proposed against the state of the art and why it is timely and credible. Explain the contribution that the project is expected to make to advance the state-of-the-art within the project field Describe the scientific, technological, socio-economic or other reasons for carrying out further research in the field covered by the project Describe any novel concepts, approaches or methods to be employed Highlight interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary and/or inter-sectorial aspects

23 CRITERION 1 EXCELLENCE Clarity and quality of the research objectives in terms of transfer of knowledge/training for the development of researcher Clear and specific description of the research objectives against the background of the state of the art, and the results hoped for (the project should be shaped in order to develop and widen the competences of the applicant significantly, in particular in terms of multi- or interdisciplinary expertise, inter-sectoral experience and/or complementary skills. Such training activities might include training-through-research under supervision by means of an individual personalised project) Clear and specific description of the training/transfer of knowledge objectives aimed to diversify the applicant s competence in terms of skill acquisition and to reach a realistic and well-defined objective in terms of career advancement (e.g. strengthening or attaining a leading independent position, or resuming a research career after a break).

24 CRITERION 1 EXCELLENCE Quality of the supervision and the hosting arrangements The host institution AND the scientist in charge must explain their level of experience on the research topic proposed and document its track record of work, including the main international collaborations, participation in projects, publications, patents, etc The host group/scientist must demonstrate its track record of previous training achievements especially at an advanced level within the field of research Measures taken by the host for providing quantitative and qualitative mentoring/tutoring (e.g. meeting with supervisor, strict connections with experienced personnel in host group, ) Practical arrangements in place to host a researcher coming from another country. What support will be given to help settling into host country (in terms of language teaching, help with local administration, obtaining permits, accommodation, schools, childcare, etc.)

25 CRITERION 1 EXCELLENCE Capacity of the researcher to reach or re-enforce a position of professional maturity in research Demonstrate that the applicant has shown during her/his career a high potential to reach or re-enforce a position of professional maturity in research, and how this will be reinforced by the new skills acquired during the fellowship

26 CRITERION 2 IMPACT Enhancing research- and innovation-related human resources, skills and working conditions to realize the potential of individuals and to provide new career perspectives Demostrate the potential contribution of the fellowship in the medium-/long-term to career development (or reestablishment) Describe the impact of competencies and skills acquired during the fellowship on the future career prospects of the applicant, in particular through exposure to transferable skills training, with special attention to exposure to the industry sector, where appropriate. Development of lasting cooperation and collaborations with other research groups/countries

27 CRITERION 2 IMPACT Effectiveness of the proposed measures for communication and results dissemination (outreach activities) Dissemination initiatives directed at general public to create awareness of the importance of research to society and to raise awareness of MC Actions, e.g. MC Ambassador, Workshop Day, Summer-School Week: to raise scientific awareness, for school/university students. Marie Curie Project Open Day: Students and the general public visit the research institutions or labs and receive a first hand experience or lectures. Public talks, TV-Talks, podcasts and articles in Newspapers about the results of the project and how these results could be relevant to the general public. e-newsletters: MC fellows develop a web-based document to be released on the internet for the attention of the public at large (e.g. Wikipedia). Multimedia releases: MC fellows make video-clips to be released on the internet, in spaces open to the public at large.

28 CRITERION 3 IMPLEMENTATION Overall coherence and effectiveness of the work plan, including appropriateness of the allocation of tasks and resources Provide a detailed work plan including objectives and milestones to help assessing the progresses of the project (where appropriate, describe the approach to be taken regarding the intellectual property that may arise from the research project). Appropriateness of the management structures and procedures, including quality management and risk management Provide information on how the implementation and management of the fellowship will be achieved and the practical arrangements that can have an impact on the feasibility of the project. Provide a contingency plan to reinforce the credibility of the project.

29 CRITERION 3 IMPLEMENTATION Appropriateness of the institutional environment (infrastructure and operational capacity) Specify the host institution s available infrastructures and whether these respond to the needs set by the project. Specify the host institution s operational capacity and whether these are appropriate to the applicant s and the project s needs. Competences, experience and complementarity of the participating organizations and institutional commitment Specify to which extent the applicant and the project can benefit from the host institution's experience in the field of research and from its international collaborations with complementary expertizes and how the latter would contribute to the project. Specify the institutional commitments of participating organizations.

30 ETHICS Any ethics issues that may arise must be described in the proposal. In particular, you should explain the benefit and burden of the experiments and the effects these may have on the research subject. Provide informed consent when the following are involved: children Healthy volunteers Human genetic material Human biological samples Human data collection. Address Data Protection and Privacy, when dealing with data affected by privacy issues, e.g. Health information Financial and genetic information Criminal justice information Location information The following special issues must be carefully taken into account: Research involving Developing Countries Research on mammals Human Embryonic Stem Cell (hesc) Research Dual Use
