2 Message from the Chief Executive Partner Throughout its long history, Allens Arthur Robinson has played a signifi cant role in Australian legal and commercial life. We are a fi rm that values relationships built on integrity, trust and respect. We value knowledge and understanding. We focus on excellence and the practical application of the things we do. We encourage our people to be leaders in the wider community. Allens believes that closing the gap between Indigenous and non-indigenous Australians is of vital importance to our firm, our society, our culture and the future of our nation. Closing the gap requires the fostering of strong relationships with Indigenous people and their communities, the growth of genuine respect and the creation of opportunities. Our Reconciliation Action Plan outlines the action we will take to achieve this. We recognise the importance of reconciliation and, having regard to our fi rm s history and values, we commit ourselves as a fi rm and as a community of individuals to the action described in this Reconciliation Action Plan. Michael Rose Chief Executive Partner Our Firm Allens Arthur Robinson is an international law fi rm. We have more than 1500 people in 14 cities in Australia, South East Asia and China. Our Reconciliation Action Plan In late 2008 we formed a Reconciliation Action Plan working group, comprising partners and employees from across the fi rm and sponsored by Michael Rose, Chief Executive Partner. We also began our consultation process with the Indigenous community and Reconciliation Australia. Our Reconciliation Action Plan builds on and extends our signifi cant engagement with Indigenous Australians and their communities.
3 Respect Our success as a fi rm is built on the character, skill and judgement of our people and the experiences and values they bring from their homes and communities. We operate in many countries and recognise the creative energy that is generated when people with different backgrounds, cultures and experiences work together. We value these differences and foster an environment of mutual respect. Respect between people is a fundamental value in our fi rm and a fundamental foundation of our Reconciliation Action Plan. Relationships As a fi rm we focus on the quality of our relationships with our clients, our colleagues in the legal profession and with the wider community. We invest in these relationships and see them as a primary source of satisfaction in our working lives. The quality of our relationships with Indigenous Australians, Indigenous communities and Indigenous organisations is an important area of focus in implementing our Reconciliation Action Plan. Opportunities If our Reconciliation Action Plan is to have real, practical and lasting impact, it must create opportunities for Indigenous Australians to expand their skills and experience. Our plan aims to create these opportunities. It also aims to provide our people with an opportunity to expand their knowledge and experience through participation in reconciliation and engagement with Indigenous colleagues. By August 2010 we will: Build cultural awareness across our fi rm and in our community Respect Relationships Opportunities Introduce cultural awareness training. All graduates to undertake cultural awareness training. Develop on-campus Indigenous learning initiatives across the law student community. 6 Tracking progress and reporting We recognise that change takes time and that the initiatives we implement will change, evolve and develop. To ensure that we make a real, profound and lasting contribution to reconciliation, we have put in place a number of steps: Initiative Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group meetings Our Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group will meet regularly to ensure that our initiatives receive ongoing attention, support and sponsorship. Sub-committee meetings Each of our initiatives has a dedicated sub-committee responsible for successful implementation. These teams will be headed by a Commitment Sponsor. Advisory Group Our Advisory Group, which includes Indigenous community leaders, will meet to ensure that we are keeping in touch with current and relevant Indigenous issues. Annual review Our annual review will take place in August each year and will provide an opportunity to refl ect on what we have achieved, where we need to focus our efforts and our plans for the coming 12-month period. An annual report will be published on our website and on Reconciliation Australia s website. Reporting to Leadership Team We will provide updates on our Reconciliation Action Plan initiatives to the fi rm s Chief Executive Partner, Leadership Team and Board to ensure that work in this area continues to remain a top priority for the leaders of our business. Reporting within the fi rm It is important that the work we are doing is regularly reported to our people. We will continue to do this via our Closing the Gap intranet site and through updates in our fi rm e-newsletter. Timeframes Quarterly meetings Monthly meetings Bi-annual meetings Annual meetings Bi-annual Leadership Team and Board updates Quarterly intranet and e-newsletter updates Visit our website for further details regarding our Reconciliation Action Plan and the initiatives we have committed to: Please direct any questions you have about our Reconciliation Action Plan to: Kathryn Whyte-Southcombe Reconciliation Action Plan Project Manager T Kathryn.Whyte-Southcombe@aar.com.au
