Employer Advisory Teams Linking Industry & Education Last Update: 08/07/14
College Mission Statement We build a prosperous community by creating a technically-skilled workforce one student at a time. College Vision Statement Be the college of choice. College Guiding Principles We believe we can transform lives. Student success is our focus. We help students achieve success through program completion, job placement, and upgrade training. We are committed to helping our students build competency and reach their potential. We value and embrace diversity. Employers drive success. Our unique strength is employer involvement. We are market-driven, striving to be flexible and responsive to workforce demands. Employees are key. We promote a sense of achievement and teamwork while recognizing the dignity and value of each employee. We foster professional development and wellness for all employees. We embrace change and hold ourselves accountable to improve programs, services and processes. Integrity is essential. We expect the highest levels of honesty and credibility in all relationships, both as individuals and as an organization. We set a high standard of leadership for our industry, students, and community.
Each year, approximately 200 employers dedicate their time and expertise serving on OWATC employer advisory teams to ensure our students receive the best training possible. Here s why: MISSION STATEMENT The mission of our employer teams is to collectively direct and ensure the success of individual training programs. Employer teams are the vital link between employers, students, and the college and complete the partnership between industry and technical education. OVERVIEW Membership consists of local employers selected for their related expertise and knowledge. Members serve as an advisory group to help direct program development. Each employer advisory team consists of a chair, members, instructor(s), program directors, vice president, and facilitator. Team members provide assessment of current job market needs, assist in development of training to meet employer requirements, evaluate programs to ensure they are market driven, and assist in setting responsive, flexible program goals. Employer involvement determines program quality and strength and enhances the college s credibility with business and industry.
FUNCTIONS Each training program at the college establishes and maintains a team of at least three members, all being external to the institution and representative of the geographical service area covered by the program areas. Each team meets at least twice annually with a majority of official members present to: 1. Review the appropriateness of the type of instruction including training materials, course outlines, skill competency standards, and delivery methods. 2. Ensure that desirable, relevant, and current practices for each occupation are being taught. 3. Review our equipment and needs; recommend appropriate equipment changes and upgrades. 4. Review changing employer job skills requirements; provide recommendations concerning the technical skills employees need to be successful on the job. 5. Discuss employment trends and employer job forecasts, review student hires since the last meeting, and provide feedback on the performance of former college students. These employer representatives may also establish on-thejob training activities and internships for our students. These activities give students first-hand knowledge and experience in applying the skills they are learning in their classes.
EMPLOYER BENEFITS Input into training programs to help ensure graduates meet industry requirements Assistance in meeting the challenge of maintaining a quality, trained workforce The opportunity to identify and assess potential employees while they are students Skilled students in on-the-job training (OJT) Assignments (aka work-based training) Developing partnerships between industry and education to help meet your company training requirements through ongoing programs or custom fit training Networking with other professionals Increasing company viability Participating in economic development Contributing to the health of the local economy COLLEGE BENEFITS Employer input allows programs to remain market-driven Employers share job market information Contacts for hiring college students Enhanced credibility Contacts for on-the-job training (OJT) opportunities for our students Contacts for resources and in-kind support of college programs
ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS What would my time commitment be? Teams meet twice a year (in the fall and in the winter/spring). Additional meetings may be scheduled if needed. Meetings typically last about 90 minutes. Is my membership term limited? No. As a team member, we are interested in your input as long as you are able to actively participate. A very flexible guideline of two years has been established for team chair terms. What if I cannot attend? Besides your feedback being invaluable to us, our accrediting body, the Council on Occupational Education, requires that we have quorum at each meeting. We hope you will attend all meetings. However, we understand that occasionally you may have other priorities. If you are unable to attend, please send a representative from your company or notify us to be excused. If you miss two consecutive meetings, we may contact you to determine if you are still willing and able to continue your affiliation. What is the format used for running the meetings? We believe in operating efficient, effective meetings. All action is taken based on consensus of the team. We want all team members to accept all decisions made. Therefore, we do not require motions and seconds, etc. Food and beverages are provided at all meetings. The team chair and instructor(s) usually meet 30 minutes before the meeting to eat and review the agenda. The meeting is then called to order promptly, and members are allowed to eat while the meeting is conducted.
