2 Improve Your Career Options with a Professional Certificate University of California, Irvine Extension s professional certificate and specialized studies programs help you increase or enhance your current skills or prepare for a new career. Courses are highly practical and instructors are qualified leaders in their field. Convenient online and classroom courses make it easy to learn on your own time, in your own way. A certificate bearing the UC seal signifies a well-known, uncompromising standard of excellence. Business Administration Certificate Program Modeled after a traditional M.B.A. program, the Business Administration Certificate Program helps students develop or refine management and leadership skills to improve job performance and increase career opportunities. The program provides a solid foundation in the areas of basic business management, including finance, human resources, marketing, leadership and the law. Students will gain proficiency in strategic business analysis and the management skills and functions necessary for being a successful manager in today s challenging business environment. Sustainable Business Management Track Students have the option of taking electives in either the traditional Business Administration program, or electing to choose from the classes in the Sustainable Business Management Track. This will focus your knowledge in the areas necessary for success as a manager in public or private sector organizations concerned with the parallel imperatives of sustainability and profitability. Learn the best ways to synthesize your business acumen with sustainability in this exciting and emergent field. Students having previously completed the Business Administration certificate need only take two Sustainable Business Management track electives to receive the new certificate. Program Benefits n Develop or refine your management and leadership skills to enhance your current job performance, increase your opportunities for advancement, and gain greater career flexibility. n Examine basic financial theories and practices for improved bottom line management. n Explore the various aspects of marketing. n Use techniques for basic business analysis and strategic planning. n Gain a better understanding of the global marketplace and international competition. n Explore the fundamentals of human resources management including recruitment, interviewing, appraisal, organizational analysis, and workforce diversity. n Network with peers and other industry professionals. In addition to the above benefits, students taking the Sustainable Business Management Track can expect to: n Design and deploy business-centered sustainability plans in multiple, varied work environments; n Develop Strategies for the implementation of new sustainable improvement initiatives; n Evaluate and report on performance, impact and outcome of activities in the sustainability arena.
3 Who Should Attend Newly appointed or prospective managers from sales, marketing, purchasing, finance and human resources in either public or private industry will develop the tools necessary to confidently face the demands and challenges of today s business environment. Special prep courses lay the groundwork for those who plan to pursue an M.B.A. Students interested in the Sustainable Business Management Track may include project or process managers, policy makers, sustainability officers, change leaders, entrepreneurial professionals, public sector leaders, individuals seeking to enter the sustainability field, and students who have previously completed the Business Administration Certificate Program. Participating in this program has helped me to become more aware and better prepared to understand the broad scope of my company specifically, and business in general. It has helped me to be more adaptive and valuable as an employee. Certificate Requirements A certificate is awarded upon completion of six required courses and two electives courses (3.5 units or more) each with a grade of C or better. Students should take care to choose electives from their chosen track of either Business Administration or Sustainable Business Management. This program of study entails 190 hours of instruction. All requirements must be completed within five years after the student enrolls in his/her first course. Transfer Credit This program qualifies for degree credit at our partner universities.
