Biodiversity Loss Could Cost Business the Earth Business and biodiversity are inextricably linked impacts and dependencies. Loss of biodiversity and changes in ecosystem services create risks to business performance. As pressures on biodiversity increase = increased pressures on business to effectively and sustainably integrate biodiversity considerations into business operations. In 2013 the Endangered Wildlife Trust responded to this growing business imperative. US$2 $5 Trillion Loss in Ecosystem Services from Deforestation Each Year

Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) Founded in Operates throughout Southern Africa. Supports conservation of threatened species and ecosystems through specialist programmes and a large team of skilled field staff. Focus on identifying key factors threatening biodiversity and developing measures to reduce risk and reverse the drivers of species extinction and ecosystem degradation.

EWT Mainstreaming Biodiversity Partnership with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) From 1999 to 2012 Aim to reduce bird strikes with aircraft Included training of ACSA staff Implementation of bird and wildlife control programmes at their sites Cost of bird strike damage to civil aircraft as high as $957 million per year - Federal Aviation Authority (USA)

EWT mainstreaming biodiversity Partnership with Eskom 1996 to present Working together to reduce the number of wildlife mortalities associated with power infrastructure. More recently, assisting them with the mainstreaming of biodiversity into their broader business activities.

BIODIVERSITY & BUSINESS NETWORK EWT recognised the need for a body to assist business with the mainstreaming of biodiversity into their activities. Launched in May Supported by our Partners: Aim To facilitate the mainstreaming of biodiversity.

Five year strategy short term goals 1. Develop, gather and share information to capacitate business on the mainstreaming of biodiversity. 2. Develop online biodiversity and business toolkit for South Africa. 3. Develop biodiversity monitoring and performance framework. 4. Promote a policy and regulatory framework that supports mainstreaming of biodiversity into business. 5. Work with business to mainstream biodiversity into their activities and showcase this work.

Activities of the NBBN 1. Drive a national dialogue on business and biodiversity. 2. Organise events aimed at facilitating networking, capacity building and information sharing. 3. Facilitate training and development. 4. Facilitate the development and provision of business and biodiversity tools, benchmarks and best practices. 5. Conduct research on business and biodiversity and publish. 6. Support companies to mainstream biodiversity. 7. Member of the CBD s Global Partnership for Business and Biodiversity.

Achievements of the NBBN to date 20 events held across South Africa. Monthly newsletter distributed to members. Preliminary assessment of the status of biodiversity mainstreaming into businesses in South Africa: Overview of current approaches and practices of South African businesses to the mainstreaming of biodiversity: a preliminary baseline assessment NBBN Pam Golding Properties guide on biodiversity. Working with Partners to integrate biodiversity

Integrating biodiversity into NBBN Partner organisations Participating companies

Study aims Assess the extent to which biodiversity is currently mainstreamed into company policies and activities. Identify gaps. Make recommendations for improvement. Highlight areas where the NBBN could assist in the implementation of these recommendations. 13

Background information Natural Capital as the stocks of renewable and nonrenewable natural resources (e.g. plants, animals, air, water, soils, minerals) that combine to yield a flow of benefits to people. But focus on biodiversity and ecosystem services Business impacts Business dependencies Importance of impact mitigation hierarchy: avoidance, minimisation, restoration, offsets Concept of No-Net-Loss / Net Gains based equivalency principles between losses and gains of biodiversity value(s) 14

Methodology Interviews / discussions and opportunities for feedback A high level, qualitative desktop assessment of material impacts and dependencies on biodiversity and ecosystem services across three organisational scope: Upstream (suppliers), Core operations (controlled activities), Downstream (clients). 15

Methodology An assessment of the readiness of each company to mainstream biodiversity into its operations according to the following criteria (4 scoring options for each): Biodiversity policy and strategy; Scope of activities; Baseline information; Targets; Financial resources; Human resources / skills; Performance assessment and monitoring; Transparency / Accountability. 16

Biodiversity Policy and Strategy Score of 0: No policy / strategy Scope of activities Score of 0: No clear biodiversity-focused activity / activities only for one step of the impact mitigation hierarchy; Baseline information Score of 0: No baseline information on biodiversity values; Roles & responsibilities Score of 0: Lack of clear role / responsibility over biodiversity Targets Score of 0: No quantified target; Human resources / skills Score of 0: No quantified targets Score of 0: Lack of human resources dedicated to biodiversity; Financial resources Score of 0: Lack of financial resource dedicated to biodiversity; Performance assessment & monitoring Score of 0: No biodiversity management performance assessment / monitoring; Transparency / Accountability Score of 0: No transparency; Score of 1: Biodiversity policy and strategy aims to avoid and / or minimise impacts Score of 1: Activities for two steps of the impact mitigation hierarchy; Score of 1: Baseline information on ecosystems / habitats only; Score of 1: Clear roles for target staffs and / or stakeholders / partners for one organisational scope over biodiversity Score of 1: Sufficient human resources for one organisational scope regarding biodiversity Score of 1: Sufficient financial resources for one organisational scope regarding biodiversity Score of 1: Quantified of 1: Quantified targets for targets for some some aspects of the impact aspects of the impact mitigation hierarchy; hierarchy Score of 1: Biodiversity management performance assessment / monitoring for one organisational scope regarding biodiversity Score of 1: Biodiversity management performance disclosure for one organisational scope regarding biodiversity Score of 2: Biodiversity policy and strategy targets to no-net-loss Score of 2: Activities for three steps of the impact mitigation hierarchy; Score of 2: Baseline information on ecosystems / habitats and key species only; Score of 2: Clear roles for target staff and / or stakeholders / partners for two organisational scopes over biodiversity Score of 2: No-net loss targets for some biodiversity values e.g. species Score of 2: No-net-loss targets for some biodiversity values (e.g. critical habitats or species); Score of 2: Sufficient human resources for two organisational scopes regarding biodiversity Score of 2: Sufficient financial resources for two organisational scopes regarding biodiversity Score of 2: Biodiversity management performance assessment / monitoring for two organisational scopes regarding biodiversity Score of 2: Biodiversity management performance disclosure for two organisational scopes regarding biodiversity Score of 3: Biodiversity policy and strategy targets net positive impacts Score of 3: Activities for all steps of the impact mitigation hierarchy. Score of 3: Comprehensive baseline information on ecosystems / habitats, species and ecosystem services. 20 Recommendations Most are company specific Common recommendations: Be ambitious with targets of No-Net-Loss of biodiversity values (defined) as a minimum, for at least one organisational scope; Build capacity / experiences on ecosystem & externality valuation (what are values? How to measure and value? For what purposes?) to assess net benefits to society; 20

Recommendations Common recommendations: Build an indicator / accounting framework to assess / monitor performance as per the impact mitigation hierarchy at different scale (project, group) (i.e. net impact accounting framework and tool); Become biodiversity neutral: e.g. Actively participate in SA stewardship programme to increase protected area networks (as offset measures). 21
