2 ABOUT HEART AND STROKE For more than 60 years, Heart & Stroke has been dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. Our work has saved thousands of lives and improved the lives of millions of others. THE ORGANIZATION In 1952, a visionary group of Canadians, including researchers and physicians, established the beginnings of Heart & Stroke. Today, Heart & Stroke is about prevention, saving lives, transforming recovery and investing in life saving research. Heart & Stroke Foundation MB/SK has its main office in Winnipeg (23 Staff) as well as a Saskatoon office (18 staff) and is part of the larger national Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada. The national organization unified in 2011 and rebranded to Heart & Stroke in HEART & STROKE SASKATCHEWAN identifies their top five Stakeholders as: Government Healthcare Research entities Indigenous population Universities For more information please go to: THE OPPORTUNITY Reporting to the CEO(MB/SK) who is based in Winnipeg, the Director Health Promotion and Stakeholder Relations of Saskatchewan is responsible for ensuring the mission mandates including health promotion, health information services, advocacy, survivor support services, stroke, resuscitation and research of the Foundation are achieved in a strategic and effective manner. The Director leads the provincial advocacy efforts by opening doors for the Foundation to communicate its Mission-related priorities with government officials, agencies and with other key stakeholders. The Director is also a member of the mission team for the country and contributes leadership to organizational-wide initiatives and is responsible for refining, implementing and evaluating the Foundation s health promotion and health partnership business. The Director acts as staff support to the CEO and other committees, ad hoc task forces or working groups established by the CEO. This position is responsible for management and leadership of staff in all aspects of mission priorities. Reporting to this position in Saskatoon is a Manager, Health Promotion and a Coordinator Health Promotion. Winnipeg and Saskatoon based peers include a Director of Development, Director Government Relations and Health Promotion, Manager Communications, and Regional Director Community Engagement. REGIONAL FOCUS AREAS Heart & Stroke has several focus areas and differing priorities nationwide. The following have been identified as key focus areas in Saskatchewan. HeartSmart Kids Learning/Teaching module designed to get communities involved in teaching kids about Heart health with a focus on the Indigenous population HEART & STROKE Director, Health Promotion & Stakeholder Relations - Heart & Stroke Foundation MB/SK 1

3 Stroke Partnering with Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation and University of Saskatchewan by funding a Clinical Stroke Research Chair, with a focus on stroke best practices., rural outreach and public awareness. Women s Heart and Brain Health Initiative Public awareness campaign to improve symptom recognition and awareness of risk factors in women, research funding and improved care and diagnoses. Children and Youth Nutrition Public awareness campaign that highlights the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Stakeholder Relations, Partnerships and Advocacy Oversee effective and efficient management of the health promotion, health information services, stroke, survivor support services, advocacy and research portfolios Participate in strategic planning, visioning, and budgeting for the organization, and specifically for health promotion, health information services, stroke, survivor support services, research, resuscitation, and advocacy as mission areas Work with the national Government Relations team in reviewing, planning and implementing national advocacy and mission strategies in Saskatchewan Develop and maintain effective communication links with associations and regulatory agencies that can assist the Foundation in achieving its mission goals Research and monitor program activities by peer agencies in the health, government, and charitable sectors Build relationships with federal, provincial and local authorities, including working with staff to ensure open lines of communication and advancement of Heart & Stroke mission Support the development of healthy public policy at all levels of government Work with Mission leads across the country and the Research staff in planning and implementing national plans in Saskatchewan Liaise with other organizations, groups and individuals, as appropriate to further the mission of the Foundation Represent the Foundation, providing support and leadership as appropriate, in relevant provincial coalitions and alliances such as with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Regional Health Authorities, etc. Research Develop provincial research strategy for Saskatchewan to strengthen and build local research capacity Provide reports and presentations to the Board and CEO, regarding research updates Provide timely correspondence with researchers and research institutions Engage Saskatchewan research community in opportunities such as funding and partnerships, which benefit the HSF research enterprise Liaise with appropriate representatives from the U of Regina and U of Saskatchewan, other Foundation partners, Saskatchewan HSF staff, and mission/research committees Advisor and Partner Work pro-actively and collaboratively with staff and volunteers across the country to problem solve and develop common advocacy initiatives and strategic priorities. Support the communications and marketing staff in promoting the Foundation s programs to Foundation staff, volunteers, donors and the public. Support the fund development staff through relationship development and identification of prospects, ensuring the team has the information necessary to present the case for support. Work with colleagues in the Foundation to ensure cross departmental planning, development and evaluation of Foundation activities and initiatives. 4 Collaborate with the national mission leaders, national committees and work groups and other provincial Foundations regarding program development and management. Human Resource Management and Leadership Participate as part of the Foundation s leadership team to ensure the effective management of the Foundation and its progress toward mission Provide organizational leadership, along with the other Directors, in the CEO s absence Supervise the work and conduct of department staff including goal setting and staff performance reviews Ensure that department staff are managed in accordance with the human resource regulations and policies of the Foundation Provide leadership and support to the various volunteer committees that may reflect the Director s responsibilities Provide effective facilitative leadership to department staff and motivate them to a high level of performance Operations Develop, manage, and monitor the implementation of the provincial mission budget THE PERSON Education/Certifications University degree in health promotion, health sciences, public/health administration or related field (Master s degree preferred) Relevant professional development. Experience Minimum of eight years in positions of progressive responsibility in health promotion, advocacy, and health systems, including at least four in a supervisory role. Experience in government and community relations. Ideally, some experience with CCVD prevention and the federal, provincial, regional and municipal governments and their roles in promoting health. Experience in program planning and evaluation with firm grasp of health promotion theory and models Knowledge of and/or experience with the research process and/or grants management is an asset Additional/complimentary experience in the not-forprofit sector is considered an asset. i.e. experience/exposure to fundraising (major gifts) and managing volunteers.
