The module is based around practical activities in parallel with conceptual development so that students will build a framework for understanding mentoring and coaching processes, while at the same time gaining experience and relating this to the practical issues. Students will be able to carry out mentoring either in an academic setting where part 2 students mentor part 1 students, or in a community setting where students mentor pupils in local schools. Thus the module s educational aims are: Identify and understand a set of theoretical frameworks for mentoring and coaching Require students to practise mentoring and/or coaching, reflect on their experience, and identify opportunities for learning as a result Recognise where mentoring and coaching approaches could be of value in students future careers. Content outline A conceptual basis for mentoring and coaching The role of the mentor Mentors in teams and work groups Mentors and problem-solving within organisations Adapting mentoring and coaching to different settings Reflections on students experiences. Students will be expected to have taken MS1103 Management of Business Functions which is a core module for part 1 students taking the BSc Management, or an equivalent module..

2 WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE? On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to be able to: Knowledge and understanding: recognise what techniques can be applied in mentoring and coaching. analyse a situation and to identify whether there are opportunities for applying mentoring or coaching techniques. evaluate and critically assess the effectiveness of mentoring and coaching in particular environments. Skills: apply practical mentoring and coaching skills use these skills in an environment where you can develop your abilities by applying and refining them develop your skills while at the same time develop other people s skills Values and attitudes: understand the potential to intervene in a particular set of events be able to assess where benefits could accrue from your contribution. be able to judge how to operate ethically in a setting where mentoring or coaching is taking place. HOW WILL I LEARN? For this module learning depends on the interplay between students mentoring or coaching practice and between a series of workshops. Students will be expected to carry out mentoring and to reflect on it within the module. Mentoring practice could take one of two forms depending on which of two alternative pathways a student follows: 1. Internal (academic) pathway: part 2 students mentoring teams of part 1 BSc Management students 2. External (community) pathway: students carrying out mentoring in the broader community by providing learning support in local schools In parallel with this a series of workshops would take place where students would discuss their mentoring experience and relate it to the conceptual issues raised in the module. The majority of the workshops will be shared by students taking both pathways, but a number of workshops will also be provided which are specific to one pathway or the other. Assessment Formal observation (30%), Academic report inc. literature review (50%), Learning journal (20%). May/June WHAT TYPES OF ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK CAN I EXPECT? Assessments The assessment will include summative assessment based around a structured observation, and formative assessment comprising coursework based around reflection on students practical mentoring experience. There will be an emphasis on documenting students experience of mentoring during the module. A proportion of the mark for the summative assessment will be based on feedback from the students being mentored (for the academic pathway) or teachers at the schools where mentoring takes place (for the community pathway) The structured observation will take place during one of the last two practical mentoring sessions. Details will be confirmed with the student at least a week in advance. The observation could take place either with an observer attending in person or using video. This structured observation constitutes the summative assessment for the module so it sets out to replicate exam conditions. Assessment Criteria and Grade- Related Criteria for module assessments will be made available to you prior to an assessment taking place. More information will be available in the UG Assessment Handbook and from the module leader. Feedback on assessment Feedback as part of the formative assessment will be built into the module and provided in tandem with the students carrying out their practical mentoring experience Assessment Regulations The Pass mark for the module is 40%. Any minimum qualifying marks for specific assessments are listed in the table above. The weighting of the different components can also be found above.
