2 THE ACTION PLAN FOR OCCUPATIONAL DIRECTION This form is in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document format (pdf). You must have Adobe Reader 6.0 to view, complete, and print this form. Adobe Reader is free and can be downloaded from The form can be completed and printed electronically, but changes cannot be saved to your computer. It is highly recommended that you print this form every time you choose to complete it. This career matching process will enable you to see how your interests, skills, previous experience, personality, and values match the requirements and characteristics of the specific occupations that you are considering. These are very important factors in the career decision-making equation. STEP 1 Define My Pattern of Work-Related Attributes (see page 3). Your pattern is the baseline of your God-given talents and gifts, against which you can compare the requirements and characteristics of any occupation. Your Career Direct report will provide the information for defining your pattern. It is this comparison of an occupation with your pattern that will enable you to evaluate specific jobs to determine whether or not they are a good match for you. STEP 2 Select Specific Occupations to Match with Your Pattern (see page 4). Your interests usually determine the occupations that will include those that fit you best. Search the Job Sampler for all the occupations in each of your top interest groups as listed in your Career Direct report. Identify the occupations in which you have the highest interest from your top groups. After you have reduced your list of occupations to your top eight, you may focus your efforts on reviewing any number of these specific occupations. STEP 3 Complete Occupations Pattern Sheets (see pages 5-8). In order to evaluate a particular occupation in relationship to your God-given pattern and purpose, you need to have the same kind of information about the occupation. You may use several resources to find the information such as the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) O*Net parents/friends, library, someone involved in the type of work, a visit to a company, career guidance or school counselor, bookstore, or a search on the Internet. STEP 4 Career Matching Your Pattern Versus the Occupation Patterns (see page 9). By comparing the seven occupation segments on the Occupation Pattern Sheet with your seven pattern segments, you can check the occupations segments that correspond to, or closely match, similar items on your pattern form. If there are a high number of matches between the two forms, you may have found a career match an occupation you wish to pursue. If there is a match, complete the Action Steps sheet and use the information about this occupation together with The PathFinder as you plan your occupational direction. STEP 5 Action Steps (see pages 10-13). Complete an Action Steps sheet for each occupation for which you do a career match. This is your Action Plan for the future! (Be sure to print before exiting! Saving this document will not save your changes!) 2
