3 The Asper MBA Executive Mentor Program connects Asper MBA students with inspirational leaders in Winnipeg and across Canada. Asper executive mentors are senior level executives, representing diverse professions, companies and industries, who act as advisors and role models to Asper MBA students. Through the mentoring experience, students gain constructive guidance and advice - whether they re looking to develop their leadership skills or acquire deeper insight into the industries, functions and best business practices relevant to their unique career goals. BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN A MENTORING PROGRAM Establish a professional network. Receive guidance and advice on how to achieve your career aspirations. Increase your knowledge of specific industries and professions. Gain valuable insights from experienced business professionals. Develop leadership, communication and networking skills.
4 TYPES OF MENTORING In order to meet the unique needs of our MBA students while catering to the demanding schedules of our mentors, three mentoring options are available. GROUP MENTORING: If you are in the early stages of your degree, this experience will provide you with the opportunity to explore professions and industries while you continue to define your functional focus and future career direction. Your group, comprised of fellow students with similar interests and goals, and a mentor, will meet once. ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING: One-on-one mentoring provides you with the opportunity to learn directly from an experienced mentor. We will make every effort to match you with a mentor whose background and experience align with your own interests and career goals. This will be an ongoing relationship and you will be expected to meet at least five times over eight months. VIRTUAL MENTORING: Virtual mentoring provides you with the opportunity to meet mentors working outside the Winnipeg area nationally and internationally.
5 STUDENT EXPECTATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES Commit to the minimum time requirements of the program. Maintain integrity and keep all sensitive information confidential. Be proactive in your role as a mentee. Represent the Asper School of Business, the Executive Mentor Program, yourself, and your classmates in a professional and ethical manner. Communicate potential problems in completing program commitments to a program coordinator. Be open to experiencing industries and professions that differ from your career aspirations. Acknowledge that participation in the program is a career building activity, not a job placement activity. You are not permitted to solicit mentors for internships or jobs the purpose of the program is to explore career paths, expand skills and build networking opportunities. MY MENTOR HELPED ME UNDERSTAND THAT COMPETENCE AND CONFIDENCE ARE FOUNDATIONAL TO SUCCEEDING AT THE EXECUTIVE LEVEL. 6 ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA All current Asper MBA students, full-time and part-time, are eligible to apply to the Asper MBA Executive Mentor Program. The following criteria will be used to determine who is eligible to participate in the program. Student must have at least 15 credit hours remaining in their degree. Careful thought and consideration must be demonstrated in completing the Mentor Request Form. Excellent communications skills must be displayed throughout the application interview. You should be able to clearly articulate your reasons for wanting to participate in the program. If there are two students seeking a mentor with similar career and mentoring goals, the student enrolled in the full-time MBA program or the student closer to graduation will be given priority in being matched with a mentor. 7 U OF M CO-CURRICULAR RECORD The Co-curricular Record (CCR) is a formalized, university-certified record of University of Manitoba approved activities that support student development in venues that are not for academic credit.
