2 WHAT IS ISO 14001? An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a framework that allows your organization to consistently identify and prioritize its significant impact on the environment, reduce the risk of potentially costly pollution incidents, ensure compliance with environmental regulations, and continually improve your business operations. ISO is an internationally accepted standard that defines the requirements for establishing, implementing, operating, and maintaining an Environmental Management system. The standard recognizes that you may be concerned about both your own profitability and managing your environmental impact. ISO gives consideration for these two business mandates and provides a refreshingly workable methodology to achieve an effective Environmental Management System. ISO model An EMS assists organizations in identifying and realizing environmental performance expectations of its stakeholders such as customers, shareholders, employees, local communities, and regulators. ISO provides an organization with a structured approach to planning, implementing, and managing an EMS. Operating an effective EMS can: Provide cost savings through proactive reduction of waste and more efficient use of natural resources (electricity, water, natural gas, and fuels) Tighten production processes, yield increased efficiency, and reduce the risk of environmental incidents Improve internal communications and morale often leading to sound environmental solutions suggested by staff, who are the ultimate owners of the business processes Ensure that the organization is better positioned to avoid future fines and penalties, and deprived reputation from not meeting environmental compliance requirements Reduce environmental liability through demonstrating better risk management Before you can implement an EMS, you must understand what you currently know about your operations and the associated environmental impacts and performance. First, look at your current activities, products, services and processes, and their impact on the environment. This will provide a baseline from which progress can be measured. The types of questions you might want to ask are: What are our waste streams? What regulations and legal requirements do we have to meet? How much energy do we use? What environmental consideration is given to the design of our products/services and the purchasing of raw materials? What do our customers, neighbors, and other interested parties think of us? Learn more at: Policy and Planning ISO requires you to produce a policy statement that communicates your environmental visions and expectations to interested stakeholders. It sets forth the management structure of how you are to control environmental impacts associated with your operations. From commitment to prevention of pollution to availability to the public, there are seven essential elements that must be addressed when formulating your environmental policy statement. Environmental Aspect Identification and Impact Assessment An initial review of your operation with a focus on inputs and outputs will enable you to identify the activities that will have or have the potential to interact with the environment whether beneficially or adversely. Next, you will need to conduct an assessment and determine those aspects that have or can have significant impact on the environment. Subsequently, control of significant environmental impacts will form the focus of your management system. Operational Control Typical significant environmental impacts may be identified in the generation, control, and mitigation of the following: Production wastes or by-products Air emissions Energy consumptions Discharge of waste effluents Handling, use, and storage of chemicals Objectives, Targets, and Management Programs Your environmental policy has committed you to improve on your environmental performance. You will need to set specific and measurable operational objectives and performance targets. These objectives and targets should be based on outcomes of your environmental impact assessment, as well as applicable legal, regulatory, and other requirements. For example: Reduce and maintain hazardous air emission intensity by 15% based on last year s performance within 12 months Reduce the tonnage of non-recyclable solid waste by 25% within 24 months Identify substitutes and eliminate total quantity of hazardous chemicals used in production by 50% within 3 years These objectives and targets are achieved through progressive implementation of environmental management programs which define what will be done, who will be responsible, and by when. 4 BSI Environmental Management

5 Implementation and operation To implement and operate an effective EMS, you will need to: Ensure available resources essential for the establishment and development of an EMS are allocated Define the roles, responsibilities, and authorities of staff with regard to the environment, including the appointment of a management representative to act as a project manager Describe how the management system is structured (commonly achieved through the publication of an environmental management systems manual) and formalize the necessary procedures to control environmental impacts Establish, maintain and test a process for dealing with emergency situations and accidents Also, ensure that: Appropriate training is provided and people with key roles are competent There is effective internal and external communication process Checking and corrective action You will need a process for monitoring and measuring your EMS. This process will give you the confidence that appropriate environmental aspects are identified and that you are in control of your environmental impacts as well as provide a mechanism to determine your progress towards achieving the environmental objectives. Procedures are required for the handling and investigation of problems in order to eliminate the actual or potential cause. Finally, internal system audits and associated environmental records are to be maintained in order to measure performance and demonstrate that the EMS is effectively deployed. Management review Top management will need to meet periodically to review progress toward environmental objectives and targets and ensure that the EMS remains effectively maintained. This will include a review of your environmental policy and overall environmental performance of the organization. Consideration will need to be given to changes to the emerging legal and other requirements, status of corrective and preventive actions, and relevant audit results.
