Management through BS EN ISO Dr David Smith Technical Director for Business Sustainability, AECOM March 2017
Structure of Presentation Background Business benefits of Sustainable Resource Management Key changes in ISO supporting SRM Opportunities to drive SRM through your EMS Taking Action to Improve Resource Management Summary
Background ISO 14001: 2015 Environmental management systems requirements with guidance for use was issued in September The standard incorporates substantive updates to the earlier 2004 edition, with changes designed to assist organisations to better understand and react to the challenges presented by an everchanging environment. Revisions incorporated in the 2015 edition of the standard create opportunities to drive forward Sustainable Resource Management.
Sustainable Resource Management
Sustainable Resource Management
Business Benefits of Sustainable Resource Management Improved competitiveness Reduced resource consumption, procurement, purchase, processing and waste management costs. Improved sustainable performance. Management of Business Risks Secure supply of materials at a reasonable and stable price. Hidden environmental or ethical or social impacts that can damage your organisation s reputation. Creation of opportunities for new business New business models, products and services.
Business Benefits of Sustainable Resource Management
Key changes in ISO supporting Sustainable Resource Management Leadership and Business Strategy: integrate environmental management into core organisational processes and strategic decision making. Context and Risk: demonstrate an understanding of, and manage the interface between the organisation and environment. Lifecycle Perspective: move beyond focussing on the environmental aspects of on-site activities. Take a lifecycle perspective to the consideration of the environmental aspects of activities, products and services. Stakeholders and Communication: identify and consider the needs and expectations of external stakeholders.
Opportunities to drive Sustainable Resource Management through your EMS
Leadership and Business Strategy Requirements with the potential to support SRM include: Recognition of the business significance associated with SRM; Integration of SRM issues and opportunities into the core business strategy; Identification and inclusion of voluntary commitments within the Environmental Policy; Top management leading from the front; and Communications, ensuring colleagues and supply chains understand their role in SRM.
Context and Risk Identifying sustainable resource management aspects and impacts across the value-chain. Understand the impacts, risks and opportunities throughout the lifecycle of the materials that you rely on.
Life Cycle Perspective Responding to sustainable resource management impacts in and beyond your organisation: Establish baseline performance; Monitor and analyse consumption; Consider lifecycle aspects / impacts; Establish controls to manage; & Improve performance.
Stakeholders and Communication Ensure your systems and culture support performance improvement. Communicate internally and externally: o Requirements, o Initiatives and successes, & o Learning. Engage with suppliers and customers: o Supplier / stakeholder workshop; o Advising consumers about product repair and take-back schemes; o Opportunities for end of life refurbishment / recycling / disassembly & recycling.
Taking Action to Improve Resource Management through your EMS
Taking Action to Improve Resource Management through your EMS 1. Provide leadership to create a positive culture around a clear vision. 2. Catalyse progress on resource management by developing an action plan identifying departmental and individual responsibilities. 3. Involve your entire workforce in resource management initiatives, particularly those in research and development and the design of products and services.
Taking Action to Improve Resource Management through your EMS 4. Maintain a clear understanding of your businesses potential exposure to resource security risks, which are dynamic in their nature. 5. Align your systems to deliver effective performance improvements in the management of resources. 6. Embrace the circular economy within your long-term business strategy to identify ambitious targets and initiatives.
Summary ISO provides a management framework to recognise and realise the benefits of enhanced resource management and help deliver Sustainable Resource Management. Few, if any, organisations can currently claim they have fully transitioned to SRM as the wider system they operate within is still a predominantly linear, rather than circular, economy.
