2 WORK READINESS Grade 12 Employment and You CONTENT STANDARD 12 WR 1: The student will understand the importance of preparing for the world of work. 12WR 1.1 The student is able to assess their knowledge of the job search process, examine their strengths, qualities, skills and personal and work values when seeking employment identifies their career interests analyzes their personal qualities and work values evaluates their career interest inventory. CONTENT STANDARD 12 WR 2: The student will understand information necessary to construct a resume. The student understands that the resume creates a first impression 12WR 2.1 and may get them the interview accurately, neatly, and thoroughly completes a general and specific resume. The components include the following; -personal information - job objective (specific resume only) - education - work experience - memberships - honors, achievements, other interests - references and special skills
3 CONTENT STANDARD 12 WR 3: The student will understand the guidelines and content for writing a cover letter. The student understands that a cover letter serves as a personal 12WR 3.1 introduction to a prospective employer identifies and types a cover letter that consist of the 3 main paragraphs. These paragraphs consist of; - purpose of letter - qualifications or reasons why applicant should be interviewed - request for an interview. CONTENT STANDARD 12 WR 4: The student will understand the guidelines and content for writing a cover letter. The student understands that a cover letter serves as a personal 12WR 4.1 introduction to a prospective employer identifies the 3 main paragraphs to a cover letter. These paragraphs consist of; - purpose of letter - qualifications or reasons why applicant should be interviewed - request for an interview
4 CONTENT STANDARD 12 WR 5: The student will understand what employers look for in an employment application. The student understands that employers look for a completed, 12WR 5.1 accurate, neat and legible employment application to improve their opportunities for employment accurately completes a variety of employment applications; Those components on employment applications may consist of the following; -utilizes blue or black ink -current or previous addresses/social security number -education information -previous work record -work skills -business related documents. i.e., certificates, license/s, references, copy of resume. The student understands that employers look for a completed, 12WR 5.2 accurate, neat and legible reference letter submits 3 references that may include the following; information about the student s work ethics, character, educational background, work abilities, special accomplishments, special skills, and an invitation for reader to call for details.
5 CONTENT STANDARD 12 WR 6: The student will understand that there are many ways to locate and research jobs, research company. The student understands that there are a variety of ways and 12WR 6.1 methods to seek employment networks through role-playing with others schedules, via phone call to visit a local business reviews employment opportunities in the Career Center and private employment agencies and the local state employment office utilizes the internet via Choices Program visits the Labor Training Academy visits the state Apprenticeship Council makes a personal visit (unscheduled) to local employer The student understands that there are a variety of ways and 12WR 6.2 methods to research a company ask questions with employees at that company writes or calls the company for information uses the Internet to check website for information on its mission, philosophy, and products visits the library to access information from books, newspapers and articles about the company visits the Chamber of Commerce to access name of company, contact person s name, how many employees, and yearly earnings.
6 The Interview CONTENT STANDARD 12 WR 7: The student will understand that there are primarily three stages of the interview process, each impacting the other. The student understands that the first stage of a interview is the 12WR 7.1 preparation stage familiarizes himself/herself with the company organizes all the material needed for the interview. i.e, resume, reference list, application prepares questions to ask employer reviews a list of potential interview questions. (refer to Getting A Job Process Kit pg ) plans for the proper clothing attire and appearance. The student understands that the second stage of a interview is the 12WR 7.2 actual mock interview and consist of four components introduces himself/herself and states what position they are applying for answers all questions from perspective employer with a brief, concise manner asks specific job related questions about the company closes the interview by thanking the employer and leaving with a positive image reviews the Do s and Don ts (listed in Getting A Job Process Kit pg. 35)
7 The student understands that the third stage of an interview is the 12WR 7.3 actual follow-up stage, consisting of 5 components returns for a second visit or a telephone call within 3 days of the interview re-introduces himself/herself if called for a second interview conveys additional thoughts that may have been overlooked during original interview re-emphasizes strengths for the job thanking the interviewer for his/her time and for consideration of the job types and sends or hand delivers a thank you letter within 24 hours. (refer to pg. 41 in Getting A Job Process Kit )
8 Leaving a Job CONTENT STANDARD 12 WR 8: The student will understand that there questions to consider before leaving a job and when resigning the student is able to format a resignation letter. The student understands that there are four components to a 12WR 8.1 resignation letter dates the resignation letter lists the reason/s for leaving conveys an appreciation of the skills learned conveys an appreciation of fellow employees and/or company.
