8 Worker Care Activities In certain crisis situations, provide necessary consultation and referral of personnel Oversee the monitoring and evaluation of worker care functions Provide other worker care services as defined by assessment and consultation with HR and managers Pre/Post disaster functions: Participate in local and regional disaster planning to provide inclusion of worker care concepts and practice Facilitate incorporation of worker care elements into existing human resources recruiting and screening procedures Consult and facilitate in development of ongoing worker care in nondisaster settings within the Red Cross 8
9 Facilitate worker care needs assessments Coordinate with responsible parties for overall assessment of disaster situation Integrate worker care assessment protocols (see appendix C&D) Participate in assessment or orient assessors to worker care issues Use worker care stressors checklists as guide (see slide ) to quantify or qualify onsite stressors in each category Prioritize stressors based on available information from assessment, knowledge of worker care and uniqueness of situation Create action plans for worker care from above priorities (Appendix E) 9

12 Provide worker care orientation and training "Meet and greet" incoming workers and volunteers in coordination with HR Handout prepackaged worker care materials (see appendix F, G, &H) Provide available information related to disaster situation as well as clarity of roles for assignment in conjunction with HR Train as appropriate/possible within context,is an those that have not had WC I (WC II for managers) Established communications and information dissemination networks (information board, meeting place for information dissemination, etc) 12
13 Facilitate organizational support to provide for worker basic needs Brief managers/supervisors related to assessment of worker stressors Identify priorities for stress mitigation Working with managers, facilitate provision of services and goods to meet worker basic needs (food, shelter, rest areas, establishing of worker teams, support services) Use worker team feed back, observation, and surveying to update assessment of basic needs 13
14 Develop access to community resources for worker stress reduction Assess available community resources related to worker care needs With appropriate managers, facilitate relationships and logistics for access of community resources Develop situation specific protocols for access of community resources with supervisors Disseminate information on available resources 14
15 Facilitate means for personnel to stay in touch with family and friends Assess available communication systems Develop relationships for access of these systems (calling cards, cell phones, access, computer access, etc. Develop protocols for usage as a part of an orientation package Reinforce with worker teams the importance of continued contact with family support systems 15
16 Provide consultation and support to supervisory personnel to ensure: Continuing assessment of worker stressors: a. Develop communications system through DRT, ERT and worksite meeting and consultations b. Provide regular assessment updates to management staff c. Realign action plans for worker stress mitigation with management staff 16

Through orientation, training and ongoing consultation with worker teams assist worker is in self care planning c. Develop ongoing self-care review as a part appear support activities d. Facilitate self care though consultation with workers related to available resources 17

Processing should be at end of shift with recommended shift overlap to free end of shift workers b. Develop/facilitate teambuilding/communications experiences within work teams and for staff in general c. Facilitate manager/supervisor worker teams and peer support as modeling for other staff. 20

24 Develop referral relationships for employee assistance in crisis situations Define and develop relationships with community resources to meet special needs and to respond to crisis intervention. Consideration should be made but not limited to mental health facilities, health care facilities, police and security, CISM and EAP based on assessment of stressors Develop protocols for worker care personnel, supervisors and HR for utilization of the above resources 24
25 In certain crisis situations, provide necessary consultation to and referral of personnel Worker care personnel will consult with workers in crisis within the limits of their capacity to assess the situation Worker care personnel will make recommendations to managers/hr for referral and interventions based on worker care issues Worker care personnel will not acting independently except in extreme crisis Worker care personnel may follow through with appropriate referral at the direction of managers/supervisors 25
