2 How to use the Manufacturing workbook The workbook contains information, activities, tips and ideas, quizzes and test questions. These are the sections to look out for: Some of the stoppage times are in minutes, others in hours and minutes. Remember that there are 60 minutes in 1 hour. These boxes contain useful tips and suggestions You work in the despatch department. Part of your job is to weigh parcels to make sure that they can go by normal post. Write down the weights of these parcels in order from the lightest to the heaviest. Split these sentences into two shorter points. (Look at the example first to help you.) Get another operator. Replace the scrapers on the machine. The best response is: A B C When you see the clipboard sign it means you have a question to answer or a task to do. The question or task will be printed in bold type. If there is more than one task on a page, the clipboards will have numbers to help you check your answers. The pencil sign marks the place where you write your answer. You may be asked to do different things depending on the question, such as: l writing your answers on the dotted lines or solid lines l writing the answer in the spaces provided l ticking a checkbox l circling the answer. You can photocopy the worksheets in the workbook and use them to help improve your skills in the workplace. They will also help you to develop your literacy and numeracy skills. They may be useful for other qualifications as well. Sometimes you might need to check your answers. You ll find answers in the back of the book. Advice to tutors: This pack contains a selection of support materials for the development of a range of literacy and numeracy skills. The materials can be used with learners from Entry 2 to Level 2 of the adult literacy and numeracy core curricula, though most of the activities are at Entry 3 and Level 1. Full curriculum referencing is given on pages

3 for Work Manufacturing 4 Money and numbers Keeping track of your hours You need to be able to work out your timesheets to make sure that you are paid for the number of hours you have worked. Sometimes you may work more than your standard week and will get overtime pay. Some companies allow flexitime; this means you can set your own hours. Keeping a record of your hours worked is important. You work flexitime. Complete the hours worked column on this weekly time sheet and then answer the questions. Work out the hours worked each day and the total for the week. (Monday has been completed for you.) FLEXISHEET NAME: Joel Peters Carried forward 0:00 WEEK ENDING: 12 November DAY FROM TO FROM TO HOURS WORKED Monday 9:00 1:00 1:30 5:30 8 h 00 m Tuesday 8:45 12:45 1:30 5:30 Wednesday 9:15 1:15 2:00 6:30 Thursday 8:00 12:30 2:00 6:00 Friday 9:00 12:00 2:00 4:00 Total hours worked for week: Standard working hours: 37 Time in credit (+) or deficit (-) 37 h 00 m 1. What is the total number of hours worked this week? Add this to the time sheet. 2. You have to compare this time to your standard working week of 37 hours. Any time above or below 37 hours is carried forward to the next week. Write in the time in credit or deficit. Use a plus sign to show credit and a minus sign to show deficit. This worker is paid overtime for daily hours worked over 8. The overtime rate is higher than the normal rate. Complete the overtime claim. Work out the extra time worked and the overtime money. Try this to work out overtime at time and a half. Example: Look at the extra time worked on Monday. 2 hours at normal rate would be 12. Divide 12 by 2 to get half, which is 6 (12 2 = 6) Add the 12 and the 6 to get time and a half which is 18. This week I worked: Day Total hours Overtime hours Overtime pay Monday Tuesday 11 Wednesday 9 Thursday 8 Friday 12 Saturday - Sunday 5 Totals Normal hours are 8 hours a day Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week. Overtime is paid at time and a half. The weekly rate is 6.00 per hour. How much did this worker earn altogether this week? 61

9 for Work Target Skills for Work is a series of CD-ROMs and workbooks providing skills development in literacy and numeracy at Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2 for learners in the workplace or on workplace-related courses. The material is mapped to the requirements of the adult literacy and numeracy core curricula. The materials concentrate on the essential literacy and numeracy skills required for work, including basic number skills, and reading, writing, speaking and listening. The tasks are all brief, work-related and self-contained, making them ideal for use in the workplace or in informal training contexts. Learners can work on their own, at their own pace, using bite-size chunks of learning to develop new skills or confirm and develop existing skills. The materials complement other methods of teaching and learning. In particular, learners can work through the materials independently or with various levels of support, allowing tutors to focus their time on support rather than on marking. For each title there is a CD-ROM and workbook available. Titles include: Target Skills for Work: Retail Target Skills for Work: Hospitality Target Skills for Work: Care Target Skills for Work: Manufacturing Target Skills for Work: Construction Target Skills for Work: Cleaning. The Target Skills suite Target Skills for Work is complemented by other resources in the Target Skills suite.
