3 Introduction The goal of this competition is to demonstrate the ability of participating teams in fulfilling a popular civil application of UAVs with quick commercialization potential. This application is: package delivery which must be accomplished outdoors. Teams can participate (based on their category, see below) in this competition in one or more of three different levels: fully manual, first person view control (FPV), and fully autonomous. The final score for teams in each group will be tabulated and the first three entries in each group will be recognized. This year collage participants are only allowed to participate in FPV or Autonomous leagues and high school participants are only allowed to participate in Manual or FPV leagues. In package delivery mission, UAVs will be given the coordinates of the package pick-up and dropoff and then they must pick-up the package and deliver it to the destination. Teams need to perform following steps in one or multiple (no more than 3) trials within 15-minute time limit. 1. Load the UAV manually with the given payload. 2. Take off from the start point. 3. Given the GPS coordinates and/or visual signs, avoid the obstacles. 4. Carry the package for certain distance following a certain path. 5. Land on the destination location. 6. Release the package automatically (mandatory for college entries, extra points for the High School entries). 7. Return to the package pick-up location through the specified path (it may be different than the previous path). 8. Land on the package pick-up location. 9. Turn off the engines. 3 P a g e

5 Safety and Security General Requirements All teams must meet the following safety standards prior to their entry being approved for participation in the competition. The compliance needs to be demonstrated before the event date in person or via a video. 1. Only two pre-authorized team members may enter the field when UAVs are flying. 2. UAV will detect battery critical low voltages. 3. UAV will automatically land when battery voltage is at or below the critical value. 4. UAVs should have a low voltage alarm. 5. UAV will auto land on the operator s command. (auto land switch) 6. Only those team members handling/ flying the UAV will be allowed on the field WHEN DETERMINED SAFE. 7. Design of the UAV must reflect safety (mechanical structure, no lose wires, etc.) 8. Eye protection and helmets should be worn by those in the operational field. 9. UAV s weight should not exceed 50 lbs. and its size should not exceed 5 ft. in any dimension. 10. All wireless communications must comply with FCC rules and regulations. Any transmitter that has FCC approval seal is acceptable. 11. All the UAV operations must comply with FAA rules and regulations for small UAS. ( 12. All UAVs and the operators must have been registered in FAA Website and must show their Small UAS Certificate of Registration ID prior to setup. ( 13. Preflight checks should be performed on the UAV to ensure it is safe. (Props are tight and in good condition, no lose wires, etc.) Package delivery competition specific safety requirements 1. UAV shall land at complete GPS signal loss in Autonomous flights. 2. UAV shall auto land at RC signal loss in Manual flights. 3. UAV shall land (auto or manual) if it exits the playing field. (coordinates are specified prior to the competition) 4. The playing field includes a margin of error that the UAVs may land in safely without disqualification. If they fail to land within this margin the drone will be deemed unsafe and is not allowed to continue. 5. Flying altitude of UAVs shall not exceed 20 ft. during the competition. Note: All safety and security measures that are outlined above cannot be violated at any time after qualification or during the competition. 5 P a g e

6 Suggestions 1. Paint tips of props so they can be seen when spinning. 2. Use Thick gloves when handling UAV. 3. Try not to utilize props that will shatter into dangerous pieces (i.e. fiber carbon). 4. UAV top and bottom should be distinguishable. 5. Pieces should be marked in such a way that they may be returned to their owners should a quad crash. 6. Use prop guards. 6 P a g e

7 Competition Procedure and Scoring System In this section the competitions are discussed in detail. Furthermore, scoring mechanism is explained. Package Delivery Figure 1. Sample Map for Package Delivery Competition. UAVs must stay in green area all the time. The mission allows UAV to be loaded manually. A fragile payload is supplied by the competition. The teams are to fly the payload to the destination flying through the obstacles, land on the destination, release the package, get back to the starting point, land, and turn off engines. 1. This mission may be accomplished either fully autonomously (no pilot assistance), using FPV, or manually depending on the category entered. The autonomous mode can be either on-board or off-board. Note: In case of wind and inclement weather condition, the competition will be held at an indoor field with no GPS signal available. 2. The locations of the start point, obstacles, and destination point will be given to the teams. Plus, pre-determined visual signs will be placed at those coordinates. 3. Extra limitations on altitude are enforced at obstacles i.e. Min altitude and Max altitude. As depicted in figure 1, UAVs must avoid red zone altitudes at each flag poles. For example, if the lower half of the flag pole is red, the drone must fly at the altitude of the higher half and vice versa. 4. The payload is fixed for each category (high school and College) and will not exceed (200 and 600 grams) respectively. 5. The payload is fragile needs to be delivered safely. 6. Package needs to be released at destination automatically i.e. via remote control or autonomously and no manual release is allowed. (This rule is mandatory for college teams and NOT mandatory (just extra point) for high school teams.) 7 P a g e

8 7. Figure 2 Illustrates dimensions of the payload container. It has 5 circular spots (see figure 3 for more details on these spots) which can be utilized to lift the package. You can use any combination of these to pick up the package. Please note that this container is completely symmetric Time Score = 100 mission compeletion duration(in minutes) 9. Max mission completion duration = 15 minutes. After this, time score will be zero. 10. Max allowed extra takeoffs and landings are 2 times (in roundtrip). After that the score will be zero. 11. Landing Accuracy score (Table 1) will be determined by measuring how close the UAV is landed at destination (Figure 4) Figure 2. Payload Container Details 8 P a g e

10 Competition Configuration All teams have 15 minutes to complete the mission at each round. If a team fails to complete the mission for various reasons (e.g. crash, malfunction, etc.) for the first time in each round, it will be given two more chances with the remaining time right after the last team finished its competition so the team has time to work on the issue. There will be a penalty for using the extra tries. After each round the configuration of obstacles may change. Round 1 All teams will participate in this round and as mentioned, each team has maximum of two retries within 15 minutes. Round 2 Semifinals Only top 16 teams (4 teams from each league) will advance to this level. Round 3 Finals Only top 8 teams (2 teams from each league) will advance to this level. 10 P a g e
