11 Points come in a number of different materials: concrete, steel and wood It takes around two days to assemble a set of points, with an additional day needed for delivery The points are transported as a complete system directly to the construction site on a special points transport unit No two sets of points are the same: our experts assemble each set of points in accordance with the specifications and with millimetre-precision The Railway Engineering Centre manufactures and reconditions point machines itself By introducing new manufacturing islands, the Railway Engineering Centre has optimised the production and reconditioning of point machines Points and point machines. 13 Rails Rails are generally delivered in 108m lengths. Delivery of 250T - 500T as unit trains. The rails are then assembled (sawing, drilling) and delivered on time Rail panels with wooden, concrete and steel sleepers The Railway Engineering Centre produces pre-assembled rail sections called rail panels in lengths of 18 or 24 metres Used rails are reconditioned The Railway Engineering Centre owns the most modern rail reconditioning facility in the whole of Europe Following inspection using ultrasonic methods, the rails are then delivered in lengths of up to 120 metres, depending on the customer s requirements Rails, rail panels and rail reprofiling. 15 The Railway Engineering Centre manufactures various types of signals in accordance with the customer s specifications Proceed signals, speed signals and L-type signals The Railway Engineering Centre s specially developed assembly and transport support system enables signals weighing up to 500 kg to be assembled and transported quickly and safely Dwarf signals upgrading service The Railway Engineering Centre also provides a dwarf signals upgrading service to replace all electronic components. 17 Relays Regeneration as a cost-effective alternative to new components Reconditioning used rails and inspecting point machines and relays is a sustainable and environmentally conscious approach Relay interlocking systems are constantly required to ensure that SBB can operate the densest rail network in the world. Modifying this technology is often very expensive and not always necessary. Therefore, as well as offering a relay modification service, the Railway Engineering Centre can also carry out inspections of individual relays as well as entire relay sets. On request, the Railway Engineering Centre can also equip all control desk components with pre-assembled cables and labels (called Dominoplättli ). 19 Points production and delivery (points transport unit) The Railway Engineering Centre has responded to requests for shorter production and delivery times by introducing a new logistics concept and just-in-time production Just-in-time production and delivery has been steadily increasing since 1999 Logistics Storage and handling of large and small components Coordination of outgoing goods (road and rail) Assignment of specialised transport Emergency on-call service (24 hours/365 days) In the event of an incident, we are available to our customers 24/7 Logistics Just in Time. 21 Everything which is removed from the Swiss rail network is either reused or properly disposed of: Recyclable materials are separated correctly and waste materials are disposed of appropriately (sleepers, scrap metal, rubber coatings, etc.) Points which have not been heavily used are reused in sidings Steel and wooden sleepers are sold Concrete sleepers are either reused for construction site equipment or are crushed and recycled Screws and ribbed plates are sold to metal dealers for recycling and melted down Recycling.
