These questions will help you prepare for your functional skills assessment as the types of questions included are similar to the ones you are likely to find in your assessment. The questions are based on scenarios you may encounter in your day-to-day job to make them more relevant to you. 1

4 LEVEL 2 MATHEMATICS SECTION A: The Outdoor Centre Answer all the questions in this section. Write your answers in the space provided. You will have to show how you have worked out your answers. 1. Each space will be 3.5 metres wide and 5 metres long. The manager, Jerry, says there is enough room for 15 disabled parking spaces. (a) Is Jerry correct? 3 2

5 The Outdoor Centre has a security fence around it with a security gate for access. The company is planning to replace the fence. Fencing costs 9.15 per metre. The opening for the security gate is 8 metres. The gate does not need to be replaced. Jerry has a budget of He can get a discount of 20% on the cost of the fencing. Write your answers in the space provided. You will have to show how you have worked out your answers. 3. Surita is the coffee shop manager and has recorded the sales of cakes over the last week. 8 Surita needs to decide how many of each type of cake to order next week. She looks at the figures in the table. As next week is half term, Surita decides to order twice as much cake as she sold last week. Each slice of cake is 1 /8 of a whole cake. (a) How many whole lemon drizzle cakes should Surita order? 3 The chocolate cup cakes are delivered in cardboard boxes. Surita finds a new supplier for the boxes. This firm can supply boxes measuring 30 cm by 6 cm by 15 cm. Each cup cake measures 7 cm wide at the top of the case, 47 mm wide across the base and is 4 cm tall. 9 The coffee shop also sells sandwiches. There are three 3 sandwiches left: 2 ham sandwiches and 1 salad sandwich. A customer decides to take a sandwich at random. Surita says that the probability that the customer takes a ham sandwich is less than ½. (c) Is Surita correct? 2 4. Surita needs to make up the roster for the coming week. Surita needs: 1 member of staff on Monday to Wednesday between 10 am and 4 pm. 2 members of staff on Thursday and Friday. 3 members of staff on Saturday and Sunday. She has 3 members of staff who do flexible hours. [Total for question 3 is 8 marks] Jennie works up to 25 hours over any 5 days between 10 am and 2 pm. Lisbet usually only works 10 hours in total at the weekend. She will work some extra hours at the weekend if needed. 10 5. Surita has noticed that wheelchair users find it difficult to use the entrance to the coffee shop. The recommended maximum ramp slope for wheelchair access is 1:12 if the ramp is shorter than 2 metres. The coffee shop entrance has a small step with a vertical rise of 15 cm. Surita has planned a ramp with vertical height of 15 cm and length of 12 m. The ratio of the vertical height to the horizontal length must be 1:12. a) Are Surita s measurements in the correct ratio? 4 SECTION C: The outdoor plant area [Total for question 5 is 4 marks] 6. Lucy is going to to fill a new raised bed with compost as shown below. The raised bed is a cuboid. 75 cm Raised bed Volume of a cuboid (raised bed) Volume = length height width 1 litre is 1000 cm 3 50 cm 100 cm Lucy is going to buy enough bags of compost to fill the raised bed to a height of 50 cm. Each bag of compost contains 40 litres. 8

11 (a) How many bags of compost does Lucy need to buy? 5 The Outdoor Centre is promoting three different composts. Joel, the manager of the Outdoor Plant Centre, shows Paulo the special offers on the bags of compost. All the bags of composts contain 40 litres. Joel says that Paulo can mix the different composts together in order to get the best deal. (b) Paulo needs 7 bags of compost and has a budget of Joel says that Paulo has enough money. Do you agree? 5 9

He delivers the goods to the two customers and returns to the warehouse. The delivery driver is allowed 25 minutes to load the van at the warehouse and 25 minutes per customer to park the van and deliver the goods. Joel knows the distance and the average speed for each part of the route. (c) The delivery driver starts work at 9.00 a.m. Provided there are no hold ups on the way, can Joel expect the delivery driver to be back at the warehouse by 12 noon? 6 [Total for question 6 is 16 marks] 10
