3 Objectives of Experiment 1. Provide you an experience where you use information technologies actively 2. Learn by doing 3. Help the company improve their system 4. Provide suggestions to the company on how the Inframarker system could be used in other markets Your final presentation on Nov. 3 rd will be attended by a company executive

4 Evaluation of Inframarker RFID Tags & Software Objective: Test the new InfraMarker mobile application with previously buried tags. Test the hypothesis that the students can locate underground assets without assistance when RFID tags are used along with magnetic locators/ RFID readers. Methods: Experiment will occur in three phases: Phase 1: Introduce Inframarker technology and brief students on proper use of equipment through in-class demonstration. Phase 2: Students will use Inframarker equipment to locate buried RFID tags Each group will locate 6 tags First 3 with the help of GPS device & the next 3 with the help of InfraMarker system. Coordinators will assist teams through the experiment. Phase 3: Students submit answers to questions based on the experiment

6 How RFID is Used by Berntsen International Berntsen International, Inc., is a company that has developed the InfraMarker solution suite. Finalist in RFID 2016 Conference Inframarker (RFID tags + software +magnetic locators + RFID readers) is used to quickly locate and identify important assets. Inframarker RFID system Berntsen wants to verify the feasibility of the new mobile application while considering its ease of use. In this experiment, students will play the role of volunteers asked to test the InfraMarker system and provide feedback on its ease of use.

October 21st: 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, 12:00 noon - 1 p.m. October 23rd: 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m. - 2:00.p.m., 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. (Please note the building may be closed; just wait outside the main entrance)

10 Experiment: Measure Effectiveness of Inframarker System Installing RFID Tag How to use the Inframarker kit Choose asset to mark with an RFID tag Bury the tag and write vital information using Inframarker scanner and mobile app Locating an RFID tag: Team coordinators will assist teams to locate one tag as a pilot study. Navigate to asset s location using built-in GPS on Inframarker mobile app & Trimble R1 The first three tags will be located only with the help of InfraMarker Software, GPS device and additional details (Notes & media) associated with the asset. The next three tags will be located using InfraMarker Software, GPS device, RFID reader & Magnetic Locator.

11 Tasks Each student on the team will have a different responsibility Student 1 (Navigation): Student 1 will carry the Trimble R1 and Inframarker software in order to find each tag s general location Student 2: Scanning (with metal detector). Student 2 will scan the ground with the metal detector to find each buried tag Student 3: Reading: Using the reader, Student 3 will aim the location on the ground where the tag has been detected and note the minimum and maximum power at which you can read the tag.

13 Instructions to download the mobile applications 1. Log in to the app store / google play store on your smart phone and search for the RFID explorer application, and hit download/install. 2. Log in to the app store / google play store on your smart phone and search for InfraMarker mobile application, and hit download/install.

14 Desired Output Results will help evaluate the capabilities of the provided hardware and software (InfraMarker Application) using the quantitative data on time taken to locate each tag using InfraMarker software. When these times are compared with times taken in earlier experiments ( ), we can also find out how effective the evolution of the technology is in improving the performance in retrieving information

18 Student Assignment After Experiment Each student team will focus on a particular market segment that aligns with your majors/ interests. How could InfraMarker benefit this Market Application. How would InfraMarker be modified to support this market Application? (ex: custom design of template, placement of tags, collection & export of data). i.e how to actually tailor the InfraMarker system to support these applications. We list below examples of few market segments, although students are not limited to working only on these market segments.
