3 With the Sion 3AE5, Siemens has developed its most compact vacuum circuit breaker for air-insulated medium voltage switchboards up to 12 kv. Compared to its predecessor the Sion 3AE5 is 30 percent smaller in volume, which means that switchgear manufacturers can now build switchboards which are more compact than ever before. With less space required for switchboards, costs are also reduced. Circuit breakers are the most important elements of a switchboard they reliably switch all operational currents and residual currents, protecting the distribution network and the connected loads against short circuits. 4 Time savings thanks to software-supported planning More than ever, electrical planners today are required to design systems that guarantee economical energy consumption, are easy to operate and service, and can be flexibly adapted to changes. At the same time, industrial operations are subject to strict safety requirements, and these must be taken into account in the design process. The dimensioning and planning of the electrical distribution system and the engineering and electrical design of machines and plants have become correspondingly complex. According to one study, the time required for the preparatory work for each item of equipment averages 2.7 hours. This means that an employee needs an entire day to obtain the relevant information for a complete branch circuit consisting of contactor, protective circuit breaker, and soft starter.
