Adopting safe working practices in producing components on shaping machines and understanding the production potential of these specialised machines. OUTCOMES 1. specify the design features of shaping machines; 2. select machines, tooling and attachments; 3. produce a range of components; CREDIT VALUE: 1 HN Credit ACCESS STATEMENT: Access to this unit is at the discretion of the centre. However, it would be helpful if the candidate had successfully completed a recognised SQA modular programme in Machine Woodworking to SVQ level III. 2 HIGHER NATIONAL UNIT SPECIFICATION STATEMENT OF STANDARDS UNIT NUMBER: UNIT TITLE: MACHINE WOODWORKING: SHAPING MACHINES Acceptable performance in this unit will be the satisfactory achievement of the standards set out in this part of the specification. All sections of the statement of standards are mandatory and cannot be altered without reference to SQA. OUTCOME 1. SPECIFY THE DESIGN FEATURES OF SHAPING MACHINES PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) The general layout of specified shaping machines is outlined correctly. (b) The feeding and clamping arrangements are identified accurately. (c) The operating principles of shaping machines are outlined correctly. RANGE STATEMENT Machines: rotating table shaper; linear shaper; spindle moulder; high speed router. Design features: clamping and locating devices; pneumatics; single and multi-station work; table movements; head movements; safety factors. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Written evidence of knowledge and understanding of: the design features of shaping machines; factors affecting table movements, head movements, feeding, and clamping arrangements; current safety legislative requirements of shaping machines. All the performance criteria must be met and all items in the range statement covered. 2

3 OUTCOME 2. SELECT MACHINES, TOOLING AND ATTACHMENTS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) The selection of machines is correct in terms of: rate of production; setting up time; being appropriate to the work. (b) The selection of tooling for given operations is correct. (c) The selection of attachments for given operations is appropriate. (d) The applications of specified tooling are correctly described. (e) The applications of specified attachments are correctly described. RANGE STATEMENT Information sources: manufacturers' catalogues; oral or written information. Machines: rotating table shaper; linear shaper; spindle moulder; high speed router. Tooling: cutterblocks; cutter holding; cutter location; high speed steel (HSS); tungsten carbide tipped (TCT); polycrystalline diamond (PCD). Attachments: guards; jigs; fixtures. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Performance evidence of competence under working conditions in selecting machines, tooling and attachments. Oral or written evidence of knowledge and understanding of: (iv) (v) (vi) the identification of machines; the identification of tooling; the identification of attachments; the application of tooling; the application of attachments for specified operations; the factors affecting choice and type of tooling. All the performance criteria must be met and all items in the range statement covered. 3

4 OUTCOME 3. PRODUCE A RANGE OF COMPONENTS PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (a) (b) (c) The selection, setting-up and operation of appropriate shaping machines is correct. Components are produced in accordance with the specification. Work methods and activities are correct in terms of: optimising the use of materials; sequencing of operations; satisfying current safety regulations. RANGE STATEMENT Information sources: drawings; specifications; oral or written instructions. Components: straight; curved; moulded. Tooling: cutter block types; cutter holding; cutter location; tungsten carbide (TCT); high speed steel (HSS); polycrystalline diamond (PCD). Attachments: jigs, fixtures; guards. Materials: hardwoods; softwoods; manufactured boards. Safety: HSW Act (Health and Safety at Work etc Act); COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations. EVIDENCE REQUIREMENTS Performance evidence of competence under working conditions in producing one straight, one curved and one moulded component. Oral or written evidence of knowledge and understanding of: (iv) types and purpose of information sources; the importance of optimising material use; the purpose of sequencing operations; responsibilities regarding statutory legislation. All the performance criteria must be met and all items in the range statement covered. 4

5 MERIT A candidate who achieves all performance criteria for all outcomes will be awarded a pass. A pass with merit may be award to a candidate who substantially exceeds the minimum requirements of the unit for practical competence in outcome 3 and who consistently demonstrates at least four of the following: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) logical description of work processes; logical sequencing of work; optimum use of time and resources; high organisational ability; high motivation; high awareness of, and compliance with, safety requirements ASSESSMENT In order to achieve this unit, candidates are required to present sufficient evidence that they have met all the performance criteria for each outcome within the range specified. Details of these requirements are given for each outcome. The assessment instruments used should follow the general guidance offered by the SQA assessment model and an integrative approach to assessment is encouraged. (See references at the end of support notes). Written evidence of knowledge and understanding of selecting a shaping machine for a given task. Accurate records should be made of the assessment instruments used showing how evidence is generated for each outcome and giving marking schemes and/or checklists, etc. Records of candidates' achievements should also be kept. These records will be required for external verification. SPECIAL NEEDS Proposals to modify outcomes, range statements or agreed assessment arrangements should be discussed in the first place with the external verifier. 6 HIGHER NATIONAL UNIT SPECIFICATION SUPPORT NOTES UNIT NUMBER: UNIT TITLE: MACHINE WOODWORKING: SHAPING MACHINES SUPPORT NOTES: This part of the unit specification is offered as guidance. None of the sections of the support notes is mandatory. NOTIONAL DESIGN LENGTH: SQA allocates a notional design length to a unit on the basis of the time estimated for achievement of the stated standards by a candidate whose starting point is as described in the access statement. The notional design length for this unit is 40 hours. The use of notional design length for programme design and timetabling is advisory only. CONTENT/CONTEXT This unit will be undertaken in a situation where the candidate will be expected to acquire specific knowledge and skill relating to shaping machines. This unit is designed to develop an understanding of the use of shaping machines and their production potential. The candidates previous knowledge of machine woodworking will be of value when undertaking this unit and industrial visits could be made to develop an appreciation of production potential which is possible on modern shaping machines. APPROACHES TO GENERATING EVIDENCE Most of this unit will be completed in a situation with candidates carrying out the procedures outlined in the outcomes. The teaching should be assisted by the experience and knowledge gained in previous modules, using demonstrations by tutors to show practical applications. Special emphasis must be placed on attention to safe working practices. Candidates should be encouraged to produce practical, written and graphical work of high quality showing a range of presentation skills. ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES Centres may use the Instruments of Assessment which are considered by tutors/trainers to be the most appropriate. 7 PROGRESSION This unit forms part of the programme for the Advanced Certificate in Machine Woodworking. Candidates successfully completing the Advanced Certificate will be able to progress to the HNC in Construction Practice. Each unit is a separate part of the framework of units for the award and units are not necessarily taken in a prescribed order, although there is a logical sequence to the acquisition of the skills and knowledge concerned. To gain, the award, the candidate must successfully complete all of the following mandatory units.
