I understand that all upper elementary students will be completing an individual project at home. Parent Signature: Student Name: My 3 ideas:
STEP 1: Ideas/Acknowledgement Form Brainstorming a need to fulfill or a problem to solve is the first step in the invention process. The invention may be a new product or it may be a new process for doing something. Define three possibilities you will research. STEP 2: Intent to Invent Plan Finding/deciding on a need to fulfill or a problem to solve is the second step in the invention process. Students will consider their potential customer and how best to convince that customer of the value of their idea. STEP 3: Research and Development Draft Students should create detailed plans for their invention or process. In the plans the developmental steps are laid out, preliminary drawings may be made, time limits are established, materials are listed, and testing methods are defined. They will consider their potential customer and how best to convince that customer of the value of their idea. During the planning step, students must decide whether they will produce a small model or a full-size prototype of their invention. Students inventing a new process will want to develop an outline for their report. STEPS 4 and 5: Developing, Testing, and Marketing In these steps, students build their invention or develop their process. They will learn that plans need to be changed along the way, and that trial and error is a part of the invention process. Once students have built their product or have developed their process, they will plan a strategy to market their invention. Students will write and design advertisements for newspapers, magazines, television, and the Internet. STEP 6: Display/ Finished Product/ Marketing The Invention Convention is the event that students have been waiting for. It provides each student with an opportunity to display her or his project. On January 24th, students will turn in their invention. At this time the inventions will be graded. The Invention Convention will be held January 31st (5:30pm - 6:30pm) during Watch Me Work Night and students should be present to answer questions about their inventions.
Step 2. Intent to Invent Plan On a separate piece of paper, type or write out answers to the questions below be sure to give detailed answers and pay attention to how many points each part is worth. 1. Describe the problem or improvement that inspired your invention. (10 points) 2. How do you intend on solving or improving your problem? (10 points) 3. What topics did you research to make sure your invention is authentic? (10 points) 4. What materials and steps do you plan on taking in making your prototype? (10 points) 5. Who is your target audience? (5 Points)
Step 3. Research and Development On a separate piece of paper, type or write out answers to the questions below. Be sure to give detailed answers and pay attention to how many points each part is worth. DUE JANUARY 22, Give a detailed description of your invention. ( 20 points) 2. Describe and list the materials of your prototype. (10 points) 3. What problems did you encounter? (10 points) Give a detailed "pitch". Include what the problem is and how your product is a solution. This should convince me that I cannot live without your product. (30 points)
Steps 4-6.
