1 STUDENT COURSE INFORMATION FANSHAWE COLLEGE OF APPLIED ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY HEALTH SCIENCES JANUARY 2010 PHRM PHARMACY INVENTORY Duration: 30 total course hours Credit Units: 2.00 *NOTE: The hours may vary. This course is a prerequisite for: PHRM-1035 COMMUNITY PLACEMENT Prerequisite(s) for this course: ANAT-1015 MEDICAL SCIENCES I Co-requisite(s) for this course: NO COURSES Course Description: The student will gain an appreciation for the roles of management in pharmacy practice. A number of management theories and tools will be introduced as well as concepts of organizational behavior. Students will have the opportunity to learn about human resources management practices; customer service; time management; marketing applications; merchandising concepts and inventory management. The impact of Federal and Provincial Legislation on inventory management processes will also be addressed. Vocational Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Describe community pharmacy management practices. 2. Practice inventory control and purchasing concepts efficiently, accurately, and according to community pharmacy standards and current legislation. 3. Discuss various ordering systems utilized in community pharmacy practice settings. 4. Demonstrate the ability to perform calculations necessary for efficient community pharmacy practice management. Review the federal and provincial acts that legislate the practice of pharmacy. 2. Review the objectives of the National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities and the schedules of the Harmonized Drug Schedules for Canada. 3. Discuss the requirements for retaining prescription records by provincial regulatory authorities and Revenue Canada. 4. Discuss the concept of mail-order pharmacy and the impact on pharmacy both as a business and professionally. 5. Discuss e-commerce as it relates to the business of providing pharmaceutical services to the public. 6. Discuss current e-trade lawsuits involving Internet pharmacies. 7. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of e-scripts 8. Discuss the impact of third party payment claim processing has on pharmacy. 9. Discuss the issues that the Ontario College of Pharmacists has with third party payment claim

3 processing (Ontario Drug Benefit program). 10. Evaluate the need for technology and automation in the practice of pharmacy. 11. Discuss the field of organizational behavior and its development over time. 12. Discuss the basic incompatibilities between organizational and professional models of structure. 13. Identify influences on job satisfaction, organizational commitment, job stress, and job turnover intention and organizational identification and how they affect organizational behavior and performance. 14. Compare and contrast community pharmacy practice across Canada. 15. Describe the purpose of a business plan 16. Discuss the important components a business plan 17. Discuss the importance of proper cash handling. 18. Define cash flow and the importance of monthly cash flow statements. 19. Detail financing options for the start-up of a new pharmacy business 20. Differentiate between start-up loan and operating lines. 21. Describe a balance sheet and detail the information it provides. 22. Define, assets, liabilities and net worth 23. Detail the process in determining the gross profit for the dispensary and front shop areas. 24. Define the term liquidity and detail its measurement (Acid test - QA:CL). 25. Define the term solvency and detail its measurement (Current Ratio - CA:CL) 26. Detail the NP: NS ratio used to describe a pharmacy's profitability. 27. Detail the importance of "Return on Investment" and how it is determined. 28. Define inventory turnover rate and discuss optimal and actual turnover rates for pharmacy business practice. Unit II Managing People and Goods & Services 1. Explain the importance of human resources management in providing high-quality services. 2. Identify critical steps in the recruitment and selection of employees. 3. Compare and contrast job orientation, training, and development. 4. Discuss the roles of motivation and rewards in employee performance feedback. 5. List the steps involved in progressive discipline. 6. Identify the distinguishing characteristics of services.

Describe service strategy. 11. Describe strategies for dealing with service failures and medication errors. 12. Discuss the management of service employees and professionals. 13. Describe common myths with regard to time management. 14. Discuss various theories and approaches to time management, including the Pareto Principle. 15. Unit III - Purchasing & Inventory Management 1. Explain the importance, both financially and operationally, of purchasing and inventory management to a community pharmacy. 2. List purchasing objectives and inventory management objectives for a pharmacy 3. Describe procurement and carrying costs for a pharmacy. 4. Describe three methods of inventory management. 5. Discuss the benefits of effective inventory management. 6. Detail the impact that excessive inventory has on the pharmacy business. 7. Detail the consequences of poor inventory management. 8. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the Point of Sale (POS) system.

5 9. Define SKU, UPC, DIN and BP and their importance in inventory control. 10. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of "open to buy budget" and "economic order quantity" methods. 11. Discuss the importance of monitoring order quantities. 12. Discuss the importance of and demonstrate cycle counts as part of an effective pharmacy inventory control practice. 13. List the values that must be determined in order to calculate the inventory turnover rate 14. Calculate the cost of goods available for sale (GAFS) given the BI (beginning inventory) 15. and P (purchases made by the pharmacy). 16. Calculate the cost of goods sold given the GAFS and EI (ending inventory). 17. Determine the average inventory (AI) given the BI (beginning inventory) and the EI 18. (ending inventory). 19. Determine the Inventory Turnover Rate given the COGS (Cost of Goods Sold and AI (Average Inventory). 20. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a high and low Inventory Turnover Rates. 21. Discuss order quantities, reorder quantities; monitoring of order quantities and purchasing products in large quantities in a community pharmacy. 29. Discuss the services that wholesalers provide to community pharmacies. 32. Discuss special ordering procedures for reportable narcotics and reportable controlled drugs. 33. Discuss special ordering procedures for verbal narcotic preparations, controlled drug preparations, controlled drugs in CDSA Schedule IV and targeted substances.

Unit IV - Methods of Ordering and Community Pharmacy Calculations 1. State the methods of ordering available to community pharmacies. 2. Detail the process for ordering via on-line from the computer dispensary system. 3. Detail the process for ordering products using a written purchase order, via telephone and by fax. 4. Detail the process of submitting product orders using an electronic order-entry device. 5. Discuss the advantages of ordering utilizing a POS (point-of sale) system. 6. Detail situations that would warrant the purchasing of a product from a community or hospital pharmacy. 7. Discuss the documentation for purchases of prescription, narcotic, controlled and targeted substances from community and hospital pharmacies. 8. Demonstrate the procedure for receiving pharmaceuticals at the pharmacy. 9. Discuss the importance of reconciling orders received in the pharmacy. 10. Discuss the importance of ensuring that received products are stored appropriately including refrigerated items, narcotic drugs, controlled drugs, targeted substances and No Public Access medications. 11. Discuss the importance of checking for expired or "short-dated" merchandise. 12. Discuss the process of returning medications that have been recalled by the manufacturer. 13. Discuss the process for returning merchandise to wholesalers/distributors and manufacturers. 14. Demonstrate the return of expired products, ordered in error products, short-dated products, damaged and defective products. 15. Discuss the process for dealing with products received and not billed; products billed and not received; overstocked products and product that are withdrawn from the market by the manufacturer or banner. 16. Detail the capabilities of PharmaClik (McKesson) and how to access it. 17. Discuss the process for creating and managing orders with PharmaClik. 18. Detail the process for using the catalogues to find products and to complete orders. 19. Detail the process for returning products with the PharmaClik system, MedTurn Inc., and Kohl and

7 Frisch. 20. Describe discounting practices that companies offer to pharmacies such as quantity discounts, promotional discounts/allowances, and cash discounts. 21. Discuss factors that impact on pricing decisions in the pharmacy. 22. Differentiate amongst market-oriented pricing, traditional pricing, leader pricing, loss-leader pricing and discount pricing. 23. Determine gross margin as a dollar amount and as a percent amount. 24. Determine the retail price of an item given the cost and known retail markup. 25. Define the term markdown and discuss the rationale for its use. 26. Calculate the cost of an item given the retail price and the gross margin percent. 27. Determine the markup on cost (MU/C) given the retail price and the cost of an item. 28. Perform calculations to determine the buying of dated discounted goods. 29. Discuss the use of price codes in the community pharmacy setting. 30. Detail the basic principles of calculating cash transactions. 31. Demonstrate the use of daily cash drawer balance sheets to calculate final cash amounts. 32. Determine final cash shortages and overages and discuss strategies to decrease the chance for these occurrences. 33. Demonstrate basic principles in maintaining accounts in a community pharmacy. 34.
