13 2 MARKET OVERVIEW 2.1 MARKET DEFINITION A spectrum analyzer is an instrument that displays signal amplitude (strength) as it differs by signal frequency. The frequency appears on the horizontal axis, and the amplitude is displayed on the vertical axis. For the casual observer, a spectrum analyzer looks like an oscilloscope and, in fact, some lab instruments can function either as oscilloscopes or spectrum analyzers. A spectrum analyzer can be used to check whether the transmitter is working according to the protocols. A vertical line is displayed when the output signal is at a frequency other than the intended frequency. Through, the instrument one can also determine the bandwidth of the digital or analog signal by a mere observation. It can also be connected to a wireless device or a computer to observe visual detection and analysis of electromagnetic signals over a defined band of frequencies. It became possible to digitally sample the QAM signals for clear constellation display after a big amount of improvement in the semiconductors. The need of the hour at that time was to analyze the RF spectrum continuously which required the ability to process time domain data to the frequency domain data in real time. This was something which neither the swept-tuned spectrum analyzer nor the VSA was designed for. This gave rise to Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer which could capture and analyze the intermittent signals.
