4 A changing energy market for Essent RWE buys Essent RWE buys Essent from it s shareholders and puts the Market Liberalisation In 2004 every consumer of Gas & Electricity is allowed to switch supplier. Grid & retailer are still combined. Unbundling The Government in the Netherlands decide to unbundle the energy company s to increase competition and create an equal market for every newcomer. The result is the split of Retail into Essent and the grid into Enexis. brand in line with other brands in Europe (15 countries). Essent becomes part of a European Market. RWE decides that Essent and Energy Direct are strong names in the Dutch market and therefore stops with the RWE name in the Netherlands and keeps Essent and Energy Direct. Increase in Customer demand With the increase of Digital technology like API s and sensor related technology the demand of the customers is increasing too. The customer wants to access his contract, overview and usage online and is used to do this on a website or mobile device. SMART Energy / IoT Introduction of Smart Home solutions, API based solutions, event information from the SmartMeter pushes the evolution of the energy market even further. The insight in what a customer really wants and give him the next best offer, becomes more important too. Next to regulating his home, comfort and energy consumption
