2 Christy Heavy Duty Pulverizer Christy & Norris heavy-duty pulverizers are renowned for their ability to grind a wide variety of materials such as steel, swarf, limestone, ceramics, wood hogging - and many others. The Pulverizer s rugged construction equates to a long life, minimal maintenance and cost-effective operation. Heavy beaters, manufactured from hardened alloy steel and held in place with nickel chrome steel pins, swing to ride the shock loads and then return to the grinding position. For some materials, aspiration on the discharge side of the pulverizer is recommended to reduce airborne dust. Semi-circular, interchangeable screens which determine maximum particle size of product are inserted through the top front doors and slide in the grooves cast in the sides of the pulverizer. A tramp trap, incorporated in certain models, allows solid items to be thrown out of the grinding chamber to avoid damage to beaters and screens and prevents contamination of the finished product. When fed automatically, the machine can be safely left to work unattended. We can provide a pulverizer to reduce almost any material to the size required. The shell is lined throughout with either cast iron or manganese steel according to the size of pulverizer and duty required. 3 Christy NPK Pulverizer The Christy & Norris NPK pulverizer was developed specially to reduce the particle size of materials which become sticky if subjected to a temperature rise during the grinding process. No screens are used. The principle of size reduction employed is to use one high speed rotor and one slow speed drum type rotor. The high speed rotor is fitted with flails and rotates in the opposite direction to the slow speed drum. A scraper is fitted under the drum so that any material which tends to stick is removed. DRIVES The high speed rotor is driven through vee belts from the main motor. The drum type rotor is driven from a worm gearbox through a chain drive. It is possible to drive either end of both the high speed and slow speed shafts, so the two drive motors can be positioned in any one of eight combinations to suit the layout. METHODS OF PARTICLE SIZE SELECTION The double rotor pulverizers do not use built-in screens so that the whole of the stream of material fed to the machine passes straight through. This means that the size reduction takes place during the brief period that the material is passing through the machine. For this reason there is likely to be a certain amount of oversize material in the ground product. It is normal to incorporate a screening device after grinding and to re-circulate the oversize material back to the double rotor pulveriser. The size of the finished product depends upon the material, it s tendency to stickiness, moisture content, temperature, the adjustment between the high and slow speed rotors and the speed at which the high speed rotor is driven. This speed ratio can be varied to obtain the optimum balance between particles size reduction and build-up of sticky material in the machine. AIR EXTRACTION It is advisable to vent the double rotor pulverizer by using an extraction fan in the collection system as a method of introducing air at the inlet of the machine. This is to prevent a dusty atmosphere at the inlet. MATERIALS The double rotor pulverizers are used very extensively throughout the world for size reduction of compound fertilizers. Details of the outputs from various size of machines are shown in the schedule. These materials can be dealt with at a temperature of up to 100 C. The machines can also be used to reduce the particle size of a sticky material such as clay for brick making. 4 CHRISTY Overhung Disintegrator DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE Of simple design & sturdy construction, the beater assembly is the only revolving part. The size of the finished product is determined by the screen mesh that is selected. Options: The beater chamber is normally supplied in cast iron but stainless steel is available as an option. Model 18 is available with optional water cooling of the grinding chamber. BEATER CROSS Grinding is by a four arm beater cross of high grade steel alloy, heat treated for maximum hardness and strength. It revolves at between 4000 and 6000 rpm depending on the model. The hammer blow shatters the material, which then passes through the screen for discharge. SCREENS The screen, which is available in either perforated steel plate or as a cast iron frame with steel cross bars, forms the lower half of the grinding chamber. Perforated plates can be supplied in stainless steel, if required. Bearings are lubricated ball and roller. GRINDING Overhung Disintegrators are usually intended for dry grinding but are suitable for certain applications involving wet material under controlled conditions. COLLECTION OF PRODUCT All Christy Norris Disintegrators are normally arranged with a sacking-off cylinder but are all available for discharge into a pedestal stand and mounting over an underhopper. METHOD OF FEEDING When only small quantities are being ground a hand feed tray is usually most convenient. For large quantities feeding from a overhead bin via and electric vibratory feeder, is recommended. OUTPUTS The capacity of the machine depends on the nature and condition of the material being ground, together the the power available and screen size. The list below may be taken as a rough guide and shows outputs in kgs per hour, based on the Model 18. The Model 11 will give approximately half the quantity shown. 5 CHRISTY 8 Lab Mill Based on well proven design with cast iron grinding chamber. Easy cleaning is facilitated by a hinged, drop down front which meets with Health and Safety standards. A 1.5kW single or 3 phrase electric motor drives a beater cross at 8000 rpm, above a curved replaceable screen. The grinding chamber is mounted above the motor and the shaft is driven via a short, toothed belt. A four arm revolving beater cross shatters or tears any material which enters the throat from a small hand fed tray supplied. Manufactured from high grade, heat treated steel alloy, the beater cross is so designed that it can be reversed when it s leading edges become worn. Two cast iron frames are supplied with each Lab Mill together with one each of eight perforated plates screens with hole diameters 0.8, 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0, 2.25, 2.5 and 3.0mm. Roller and ball bearings are lubricated with high speed grease to give trouble free running over long periods. For general laboratory grinding the Christy Lab Mill is supplied with bag collection. The bag is detachable from the metal frame which is clipped to the underside of the Mill and serves the dual purpose of collector and air filter.
