1 Welding The Welding Program delivers a combination of classroom theory and practical experience within the Weld Shop at the Johnson Center over a period of three years. The program is designed to prepare students for extended study in an apprenticeship, two-year college or employment. The skills taught are based on the of the American Welding Society (AWS). The society and its standards are recognized worldwide as a benchmark for skilled welders. Skills learned in this program give students a step up on their college training and will transfer anywhere in the United States. The program will involve the following: Basic and advanced practices of metal inert gas (MIG), stick and tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding Plasma and torch cutting Metal art Safety (OSHA training) Introduction to fabrication and repair Aluminum and stainless steel TIG Welding Opportunities: Welding, Construction 217

3 COURSE DESCRIPTION Students in the Basic Welding and Fabrication course will study Oxyfuel Cutting Acetylene (OFC-A), Torch Brazing (TB), Oxyfuel Acetylene Welding (OAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW). All welding positions, basic joint design, and various types of electrodes will be taught and practiced using different polarities. Classroom instruction includes safety, design, welding theory, math, science, the history of welding, and communication and organizational skills as they are applied to welding. As students become proficient in all welding areas, they will have the opportunity to work on customer projects and design. Students who excel in this course will also have the opportunity to work toward their Level 1 Entry Welder Certification through the American Welding Society (AWS). COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Students will learn and practice the fundamentals of welding. 2. Students will understand and apply safe working practices in a safe work environment. 3. Students will practice equipment set up and tear down, machine and tool maintenance and work scenario adjustments. 4. Students will work as part of a team to clean up and care for equipment. INTEGRATED ACADEMICS N/A EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES School will provide: welding helmet, safety glasses and shields, gloves, flame retardant jacket, apron, ear protection and dust mask when needed, lockers for work clothes, materials and welding consumables, tools and machines Student will provide: leather work boots or shoes (steel/composite toe preferred), long work pants with no holes that cover the top of the shoe or boot, pencil, notebook with paper, and folder with pockets TEXTBOOK N/A GRADING 40% Lab 25% Class work 15% Participation 10% Homework 10% Tests/Quizzes Course Syllabus Welding ADDITIONAL COURSE POLICIES Attendance will be counted towards the participation grade in each marking period.
