1.1 Introdution Mehanial Properties of High-Strength Conrete Manish Kumar 1, A.M. ASCE; Zhaoyu Ma 2 ; Moses Matovu 2 Mehanial properties of High-Strength Conrete (HSC) an be divided in two groups as shortterm mehanial properties and long-term mehanial properties. A disussion on short-term mehanial properties of onrete whih inludes, ompressive strength, stress-strain behavior, elasti modulus, Poisson s ratio, tensile strength and modulus of rupture, is presented here. The equations and formulations that are used for normal strength onrete (NSC) annot always be extended to inlude HSC, and need to be revisited. Important parameters that affet these properties and mathematial formulations that represent the behavior of HSC more appropriately are summarized here from previous researh work. 1.2 Stress-strain Behavior in Compression Stress-strain behavior of onrete for different range of ompressive strength is shown in Figure 1. The asending branh of stress-strain is more linear and steeper for HSC. Strain at maximum strength is greater and desending part beomes steeper ompared to NSC. Figure 1: Typial onrete stress-strain urves in onrete (Wight and MaGregor (2009), reprodued from Whittaker (2012)) Figure 2: Axial stress vs. axial strain and lateral strain for onrete (from Ahmad and Shah (1982), reprodued from ACI (2010)) 1 PhD Candidate, Department of Civil, Strutural and Environmental Engineering, University at Buffalo, State University of New York 2 Graduate Student, Department of Civil, Strutural and Environmental Engineering, University at Buffalo, State University of New York 1

Stress-strain behavior of HSC depends on material parameters suh as aggregate type and experimental parameters that inlude age at testing, strain rate and interation between speimen and testing mahine. The stress-strain model used for NSC annot be extended for use in HSC as the nature of loading urve hanges signifiantly. Steeper rise and sudden drop in strength after maximum value presents diffiulty in numerial modeling of stress-strain behavior of HSC. Aītin (1998) suggests that HSC behaves like a real omposite material and parallels an be drawn to the stress-strain behavior used in rok mehanis. Carrasquillo et al. (1981) reported that there is less internal miroraking in HSC than NSC for the same axial strain imposed, as shown in Figure 2. This also implies that HSC experiene less lateral strain, and onsequently effetiveness of onfinement on ompressive strength of HSC is often limited ompared to NSC. 1.3 Compressive Strength Dereasing w/ ratio inreases the strength of onrete. However, this trend follows only where strength of hydrated ement is low ompared to the strength of oarse aggregates. When these two strengths beome omparable, dereasing w/ ratio doesn t inrease the strength signifiantly, and to further inrease the strength of HSC, strength and quality of oarse aggregates need to be inreased, in addition to other fators. Typially, w/ ratios between are used for HSC. Low w/ ratio dereases the workability. Super plastiizers are added to inrease the workability in HSC. Shape, texture and maximum size of oarse aggregate affet the ompressive strength of HSC. Smooth river gravel produes weaker onrete. Smallest size of oarse aggregate produes highest strength onrete owing to its high speifi surfae area. Addition of silia fume dereases the requirement of low w/ to ahieve high ompressive strength. Iravani (1996) noted that effet of silia fume on strength development of HSC is most prominent during 7 to 28 days after mixing. Measured ompressive strength of HSC depends on testing variables, namely, mold type, speimen size, end onditions and strain rate. 4 8 in. ( mm) ylinder speimen have been shown to produe higher ompressive than 6 12 in. ( mm) ylinders, and is reommended for speimens in the testing of HSC (ACI, 2010). When ompared to NSC, there is higher rate of strength gain in HSC at earlier stages, as shown in Figure 4 (Carrasquillo et al., 1981). There is notable gain in ompressive strength of HSC after 28 days strength % inrease in strength is obtained at 56 days and 95 days ompared to 28 days strength. Curing of HSC has a strong influene on the strength development beause of its low w/ ratio. Iravani (1996) investigated the effet of uring onditions on strength gain of HSC at later stages and onluded that drying followed by moist-uring inreased the 147-day ompressive strength of HSC relative to ontinuously moist-ured onrete tested under moist onditions. Based on his test results, he also laimed that 3 weeks is a suffiient most-uring period for HSC. Testing age of HSC speimens depend on onstrution requirements; however, onsidering notable strength gain at later stages, testing age of 56 days or 90 days is often reommended (ACI, 2010). 2

Figure 3: Effet of uring on the strength of onrete (Beushausen and Alexander, 2010) Figure 4: Normalized strength gain with age for limestone onretes moist-ured until testing (from Carrasquillo et al. (1981) as reported in Shah and Ahmad (1994)) 1.4 Elasti Modulus ACI-318 (ACI, 2011) defines the seant modulus of elastiity as the ratio of stress and strain at 40% of the ompressive strength. As strength of onrete inreases, its modulus of elastiity inreases as well. The same parameters that influene the ompressive strength of onrete are responsible for elasti modulus as well. Hene, most of the empirial formulations express modulus of elastiity as a funtion of ompressive strength. The equation suggested in ACI-318 overestimates elasti modulus of HSC and ACI 363 (ACI, 2010) suggest a different equation for HSC based on studies done by Carrasquillo et al. (1981) that have been shown to produe onservative values for normal-density onrete (Shah and Ahmad, 1994): E f in GPa (1) ( ) Numerous equations have been proposed for estimating the modulus of elastiity of HSC; however, due to large variations, most of the equations are representative of only the seleted data for that partiular expression. Moreover, ACI-363 (ACI, 2010) reommends that a design engineer should verify the elasti modulus through a trial field bathing or by doumented performane. Analytial expressions are also available for alulation of elasti modulus that make use of twophase models involving aggregates and ement paste. Simplest of these models assume either onstant stress or strain in both phase. In order to use these expressions, elasti modulus of aggregates and hydrated ement paste are required, making it an unpopular hoie. 3

1.5 Poisson s Ratio Data on Poisson s ratio of onrete is very limited, espeially for HSC. Poisson s ratio of HSC is onstant in the linear zone but inreases in the non-linear zone as a funtion of axial strain. In the linear range, Poisson s ratio is not affeted by ompressive strength, uring method and age of onrete (Logan et al., 2009). Poisson s ratios of HSC reported by different studies in the linear range at 40% of ultimate stress are summarized in Table 1. Table 1: Poissons ratio of HSC reported by different studies Study Strength range (MPa) Poisson s ratio Standard deviation Perenhio and Klieger (1978), as reported in Iravani (1996) Not available 0.22 Not available Carrasquillo et al. (1981) Ibrahim and MaGregor (1994) Not available Iravani (1996) Logan et al. (2009) Poisson s ratio of HSC in its linear range varies around 0.2, whih is omparable to the range of values obtained for NSC ( ). As presented in Figure 2, HSC experiene less lateral strain in non-linear zone due to less miroraking, and is expeted to have lower Poisson s ratio than NSC. 1.6 Tensile Strength Tensile strength of onrete is measured by diret and indiret tensile tests. Diret tensile tests, whih inlude testing HSC speimen under pure tension, are diffiult to perform due to testing limitations. Indiret tests inlude flexure and split-ylinder tests, and are used popularly to measure tensile strength of onrete Modulus of Rupture Modulus of rupture is evaluated in flexure test as a funtion of ompressive strength. General expression for modulus of rupture is given as: f f (2) r where is a onstant that takes a value between 7.5 and 12 if fr is expressed in psi, and between 0.62 to 0.99 if fr is expressed in MPa, respetively (ACI, 2010). These expressions provide good agreement with experimental data upto strength of 100 MPa, but often underestimate the values for higher strength Splitting Tensile Strength ACI 363R-10 (ACI, 2010) reports a study by Dewar (1964) that laims that for lower strength onrete, tensile strength may go upto 10% of ompressive strength; however, for higher strength it redues to 5%. Expressions used for alulation of splitting tensile strength are: 4

ACI : Carrasquillo et al. (1981): f f MPa (3) t sp 0.56 ( ) f f MPa (4) 0.59 ( ) Iravani (1996) obtained the modulus of rupture and splitting tensile strength of HSC ylinders upto a strength of 125 MPa, and found that equations suggested by Carrasquillo et al. (1981) shows good agreement with experimental results within 10%. 1.7 Conlusions Behavior of HSC in ompression differs from NSC signifiantly, and new equations for ompressive strength, elasti modulus, and stress-strain behavior have been suggested by researhers. Mehanial properties of HSC are sensitive to the type of oarse aggregates and uring tehniques. Poisson s ratio and mehanial properties in tension, inluding modulus of rupture and splitting tensile strength do not vary too muh from NSC, and equations used for NSC provide a onservative estimate of properties of HSC.
