LO1: TBAT to identify and describe different types of LO2: TBAT to identify and explain a range of materials MATERIALS Activate Materials can be split into 5 main categories; Woods, Plastics, metals, composites and smart materials. You DO NOT need to know about every single material, however you do need to know at least TWO materials and SOME of their characteristics for each category. We will focus on Woods, Plastics and Metals today.
. Softwoods Activate Woods can be split into 3 main categories: Hardwoods, Softwoods, Man-made woods VARK: Visual, Auditory, R/W PLT: S ERIC
Hardwoods Activate VARK: Visual, Auditory, R/W PLT: S ERIC
WOODS Demonstrate TASK: On your OWN, high-light the key word/phrases Woods revision card.
MANUFACTURED WOODS Woods made by gluing wood layers or wood fibres together. Manufactured boards often made from waste material. Activate MDF - Smooth, even surface. Easily machined and painted or stained. Used mainly for furniture and interior panelling due to its easy machining qualities. Often veneered or painted. Plywood - A very strong board which is constructed of layers of veneer or piles which are glued at 90 degrees to each other. Used for strong structural panelling board used in building construction. Furniture making. Some grades used for boat building and exterior work Chipboard - Made from chips of wood glued together. Usually veneered or covered in plastic laminate. Used for kitchen and bedroom furniture usually veneered or covered with a plastic laminated. Shelving and general DIY work. Advantages: Much cheaper than solid wood, available in larger widths, has a consistent strength across the material PLT: S ERIC
WOODS Demonstrate Memory Challenge: In pairs you will test in each on the different types of woods discussed. Rules of Challenge : Challenge time is 15 minutes. Pairs will label themselves A or B. You both have ONE minute to re-read the information on a revision card. A s will go first and ask B s questions about what they have just read. (One minute) B s will then ask questions to A s about what they have just read. (One minute) This will be done until the pairs have gone through all the revision cards After the 15 minutes the teacher will give each student an exam question on woods to answer in SILENCE (5 minutes)
Answer the revision questions sheets provided by your teacher. (5 minutes each sheet) WOODS EXAM QUESTION Demonstrate ANY QUESTIONS YOU CAN NOT ANSWER, YOU MUST RESEARCH FOR HWK AND BRING TO THE NEXT LESSON.
Progress Check 1 LO1: TBAT to identify and describe different types of Who 1 All (Grade C) Most (Grade B) Some (Grade A) Description Identify and describe a minimum of one type of material and its use Identify and describe a minimum of two types of material and their uses. Explain and compare/contrast some of the properties woods and plastics. Identify and describe a three types of material and their uses. Explain and compare/contrast all of the properties woods and plastics. 2 All (Grade C) Most (Grade B) Some (Grade A) Describe the characteristics of a minimum of one material from each category Describe and explain the characteristics of a two materials from each category Describe, explain and compare the characteristics of a two materials from each category.
. Plastics Activate There are two types of plastic; thermosetting plastics and thermoplastics. Thermoplastics once heated and moulded CAN go back to its original shape. ( Easily recycled) Thermosetting plastics once heated and moulded can NOT go back to its original shape. (Difficult to recycle)
Plastics Activate Thermoplastics ACYRLIC- This is the most common plastic in a school workshop. Purchased in the form of sheets and comes in a range of colours. Easy to cut shape. Polishes well. : Baths, safety glasses, signs HIGH IMPACT POLYSTYRENE (HIPS)-Light material and yet strong. Available in a range of colours. Can be vacuum formed. Thinner HIPS is quite flexible. : Food containers, chairs, packaging and storage units. POLYPROPYLENE Thermoplastic often formed into products through injection and blow moulding. It is robust, strong, flexible and supplied in a range of colours : Used for electrical casings, packaging, trays
Plastics Activate Thermosetting plastics POLYESTER RESIN- Resins are combined with materials such as fibre glass, the result is a very tough material that can resist impact. Known as Glass reinforced Plastic. Car body repairs, sailing boats and airplanes. MELAMINE FORMALDEHYDE- Smooth and hygienic qualities, used for kitchen laminate surfaces. Electrical plugs and sockets, because it can be cast and is an excellent insulator UREA FORMALDEHYDE- Has high hardness and toughness, so its suitable for strong, knock-resistant electrical fittings. Scratch resistant, very good electrical insulator. TV cases, plugs, refrigerator case
PLASTICS Demonstrate TASK: On your OWN, high-light the key word/phrases Woods revision card.
PLASTIC EXAM QUESTIONS Answer the revision questions sheets provided by your teacher. (5 minute each sheet) Demonstrate ANY QUESTIONS YOU CAN NOT ANSWER, YOU MUST RESEARCH FOR HWK AND BRING TO THE NEXT LESSON.
. Metals- Non Ferrous Activate There are two different types of metals. Ferrous and Non-Ferrous metals. Ferrous metals contain iron. Therefore they rust easily and are magnetic Non-ferrous metals DO NOT contain iron. Therefore do not rust and are not magnetic. ALUMINIUM- Light grey in colour. Mixture of: 95% Aluminium, 4% Copper,, 1% Manganese. Ductile, soft, light weight and resistant to corrosion Used widely in aircraft, drinks cans, window frames, ladders, and kitchen ware. COPPER- Darkens slowly when in contact with air. Ductile, can be beaten into shape as it is relatively soft. Conducts electricity and heat. Electrical wiring, tubing, kettles, bowls, pipes and plumbing. Used also in the production of printed circuit boards PEWTER-Pewter is a soft. It is an alloy consisting of copper, lead, tin and other metals. Has a low melting point compared to many metals making it highly suitable for casting. Used for making fashion jewellery and other decorative pieces VARK: Visual, Auditory, R/W PLT: S ERIC
. Metals- Ferrous Ferrous metals can be considered as an ALLOY. Activate Alloys are metal that are combined with other substances resulting in superiors properties such as; strength, hardness, durability, toughness and tensile strength. IRON- A ferrous metal is a metal that contains iron. Mild steel is used to manufacture a range of steel products. Car bodies, general parts for machines, steel tube, chains and many more MILD STEEL- A ferrous metal is a metal that contains iron. Mild steel is used to manufacture a range of steel products. Car bodies, general parts for machines, steel tube, chains and many more STAINLESS STEEL- Alloy of iron, nickel and 10.5% to 11% chromium. Tough, resistant to rust and stains. Does not corrode. Cutlery, medical instruments. Stainless steel pots and bans. Jewellery and watches. VARK: Visual, Auditory, R/W PLT: S ERIC
