3 Joining with Bonding Pastes Bonding pastes and adhesives have many advantages of special interest to the composite industry. They spread loads over large areas unlike bolts, screws and rivets which concentrate loads at small points. ENGUARD bonding pastes are specially designed for different areas in the marine, building / sanitary, tanks & silos and transport industry. 3/19

4 Characteristics 1 Gel Time Time when bonding paste starts to gel. NOTICE: Parts must be joined before bonding paste starts to gel. Hardening time Time when work can continue on part. NOTICE: Final bonding strenght after 72 hours at room temperature or higher. Viscosity From low viscosity, low thixotropy products to high viscosity, high thixotropy products 4/19

Characteristics 2 Density Depending on use density of bonding paste variates from 0,7-1,5. Catalyst indicator Indicates by changing color when catalyst is added to bonding paste.

Working Practices 1 Make sure that the ENGUARD material is at room temperature before use. 2 Working temperature should be 18-25 C.

11 Working Practices 1 Make sure that the ENGUARD material is at room temperature before use. 2 Working temperature should be C. 3 Surfaces should be clean, grease-free (sanded if needed) and dry before applying ENGUARD bonding paste. 4 Add 1,0-2,5% MEKP catalyst and mix properly (see individual product data sheet). 5 ENGUARD bonding paste can be used on surfaces such as polyester laminates, polyurethane- and PVC foams, wood and balsa. 6 Adhesion should be tested first on those surfaces which are not mentioned in point 5. 7 Do not use mechanical forces on bonded parts within 3 days. 8 Close up the packaging immediately after use. 11/19

18 Designing Joints Conventional mechanical joining methods such as bolting, riveting and welding are very good at carrying tensile and peel type loads but bonding pastes perform best when loaded in compression and shear. Both joining methods certainly have their advantages and appropriate aplications but those unique to adhesive bonding are good reasons to consider joining with bonding pastes.
