Wisconsin DOT: Adopting a Model-Based Approach to Roadway Design and Construction Eric Arneson P.E. Methods Development Engineer Wisconsin Department of Transportation Rick Larson P.E. Applications Engineer, Transportation - Autodesk, Inc.

Presenters Eric Arneson P.E. Methods Development Engineer at Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) Eric.Arneson@dot.wi.gov Eric is part of a team currently implementing, customizing, and supporting Autodesk Civil 3D at WisDOT. He also provides support, training, customizations, and technical standards for the existing engineering software from survey to construction. He has 16 years of experience with the department in design, construction, and supporting engineering software. Rick Larson P.E. Applications Engineer, Transportation at Autodesk Rick.Larson@autodesk.com Rick has been an Applications Engineer at Autodesk since June 2011. Prior to this Rick was a Methods Development Engineer at WisDOT. Rick had 24 years of experience with the department in design, construction, and supporting engineering software.

Summary With the implementation of AutoCAD Civil 3D, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has developed a model-based approach to designing transportation projects as part of our goal to make construction-ready Automated Machine Guidance Roadway Models a deliverable of the design process. In 2011, WisDOT saw its first highway projects completed using the new design system and, through a pilot effort, has shared these models with prospective bidders. How did WisDOT designers benefit by using a model-based approach to highway design? How did WisDOT contractors benefit by having the models available to help prepare bids? Does the model-based approach lead to construction efficiencies? What has Wisconsin DOT learned from their Roadway Model Sharing Pilot effort, and where are we going from here?

Learning Objectives At the end of this class, you will be able to Explain WisDOT s move to model-based Design Why? How? Demonstrate model-based Design approach Explain WisDOT Providing the Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) Roadway Models to Contractors Background What the AMG Roadway Models consist of How the AMG Roadway Models are certified and shared Demonstrate 3D Model problems and fixes

Learning Objectives (continued) At the end of this class, you will be able to Explain findings from Pilot Projects Explain Lessons Learned by Design and Construction Explain WisDOT s Future 3D Technology plans

Wisconsin DOT s move to model-based Design

Wisconsin DOT s move to model-based Design Why? Produce existing plan faster and cheaper with fewer mistakes All model-based products come from the same data construction details plan/profile sheets cross-section sheets One model update impacts all model-based products in a live environment.

Wisconsin DOT s move to model-based Design How? Design workflow developed with goal to take advantage of 3D data technologies Develop accurate proposed roadway surface models Construction-ready model output Recognition that 3D roadway models support for AMG were part of a bigger puzzle

Demonstrate - model-based Design approach 9

Providing the Automated Machine Guidance Roadway Models to Contractors

Providing the Automated Machine Guidance Roadway Models to Contractors Background 2006 2008: Development and Piloting of Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) Specification for Sub-Grade Construction Advisory Group, Stakeholder Workshop, Two Construction Seasons with Five Pilots 3D Roadway Model Data Development and Exchange a Major Issue

Providing the Automated Machine Guidance Roadway Models to Contractors Proposed surfaces ready for Automated Machine Guidance usage Four surfaces for each construction stage Exist Top Base Course Datum Data density of surface model is design speed dependent Construction staking tolerances determine density Roadway alignments

Findings from Pilot Projects

Findings from Pilot Projects What the contractors said 3D models convey design intent much better than 2D plan Reduces uncertainty and risk taking in bidding Availability of 3D models frees contractor staff from development More time for preparation of multiple bids Results in greater competition and more bids submitted to WisDOT Enhanced identification and design of cost reduction incentives Better information for planning project earthwork activities 3D model checking much easier than plan checking

Findings from Pilot Projects All earthwork and HMA base course by AMG Prime contractor and project engineer use same control for site calibration Contractor provides final models to engineer (contractor ensures that models conform to plans) Very little staking Slope stakes, string lines for concrete base course and for paving

Findings from Pilot Projects Unanticipated findings Utility of existing surface is extensive Visualization of the existing surface beyond the R/W reduces uncertainty in project planning Identification of candidate areas for borrow and waste AND compute volumes Eliminates need for preliminary site survey by contractor

Findings from Pilot Projects Model content WisDOT will add Longitudinal breaklines to Roadway Model Content Requirements. Breaklines will be as visual clues to equipment operators, not for surface construction in AMG software

Lessons Learned

Lessons Learned Project timelines were not impacted Able to do things that could not be done before Model-based design excels in complex areas such as intersections, crossovers, cul-de-sacs, and gore areas Project 2: Horizontal geometry to cross sections 1 month

Lessons Learned DESIGN FOR THE MODEL - The Roadway Model is your design output, just as critical as Plan output Develop Model Surfaces during the initial stages of corridor design Watch Model Surfaces Develop Throughout the Iterative Processes of Design Development Level of Detail More detail is better

WisDOT s Future 3D Technology Plans MANAGE PLAN BUILD DESIGN

WisDOT s Future 3D Technology plans Plan has 2-5 Year Planning Horizon with Five Active Initiatives Statewide Real-Time Kinematic GPS Network DTM Data Collection 3D Design Automated Machine Guidance Field Technology and Inspection

WisDOT s Future 3D Technology plans WisCORS (Wisconsin s real-time GPS network) being adopted for rovers AND for AMG construction equipment No local base station required Contractors expressed desire for project control pre-bid WisDOT will search for a mechanism to do this Contractors and project engineers expressed need for all players to use same project control WisDOT will look for method of utilizing existing resources to ensure this

WisDOT s Future 3D Technology plans Technology adoption described here is a component of a broader WisDOT 3D technologies implementation plan Plan has a two-year short-term horizon and is currently being updated Findings of the work we have described here should provide significant substance for the updated plan Reports for WisDOT Implementation Plan: 3D Technologies for Design and Construction and Final Report - Implementation of GPS Controlled Highway Construction Equipment Are found here - http://cmsc.engr.wisc.edu/reports.html
