President s Message Mary Ann Bedics President, Ptarmigan Ski Club Usually I am able to zero in on a theme for my President's Message. This month my brain is "all over the place" with ideas and reflections. This message may seem a bit desultory but here it goes... Over the years as a member of the PSC I have observed some interesting things about its members. Loyalty: Many long time members are approaching or have approached the forty year mark. Creativity: For the 2015-2016 season many new ideas were floated by members and implemented. Generosity/Giving Back: Again, your dues and personal contributions allowed the club to donate $1000.00 total to two local Special Olympic ski programs, non-perishable goods to a local food bank, infant clothing and cash to a shelter in Bethlehem, and $250.00 to the Jim Thorpe Pedestrian Bridge in the name of Ernie Miller. The PSC treasury supplemented almost $300.00 to your activities and over $1700.00 in meeting costs. (Love that beer!) Many folks sent cards and well wishes to Bud Cole who is now home after many months of hospitalization and rehabilitation. Continuity: In March the same folks were elected to serve on the board for the 2016-2017 season. Tom Weiser and Mary Ann Bedics still represent the PSC at the EPSC meetings. Dues for the 2016-2017 season will remain the same. (Note: It is now time to renew your membership. Our fiscal year is May 1 through April 30.) Changes: We no longer have a post office box number. You may contact any board member via the information always included on the last page of the newsletter. (We have gone high-tech and are also saving the rental fee.) It was decided to change the weekly happy hour start time to 5:00. (It's always five o'clock somewhere, right?) A committee is looking into a possible change of venue for the 2016 Holiday Happy Hour. Well, there it is. My brain can now relax.

At 9:30 a.m. we will start riding from Frenchtown to Lambertville at your own pace along a shaded, scenic bike trail with fine gravel suitable to all types of bike tires. SHORTER options include turning around at Stockton (24 miles - round trip); or Bull's Island (8 miles south of Frenchtown) to Lambertville (16 miles - round trip) LONGER options include biking on from Lambertville to Washington's Crossing, Trenton, and Princeton. If you prefer not to bike, you could explore the quaint towns of Frenchtown, Lambertville, and New Hope (just across the bridge from Lambertville) and join us for lunch somewhere. LUNCH OPTIONS: Stockton - a deli with outside picnic tables right on the bike path, Lilly's Meals, and the Stockton Inn with an outdoor garden by a waterfall Lambertville: Lambertville Station (right on the bike path) has a lovely outdoor patio overlooking the canal. There are many other eating places in Lambertville and across the bridge in New Hope. Bike as far as you like, turning around whenever you wish and heading back to your car. Stop at the end of your ride for an ice cream reward at the Bridge Cafe in Frenchtown if you like. Hope you can join us for a fun day!
Spring Banquet: Recap by Mary Ann Bedics Shedding our winter garb for some spring duds, fifty-five Ptarmigans attended the PSC annual Spring Banquet. For the third year in a row we were treated to excellent service and a delicious dinner buffet at the Masters at Shepherd Hills. Entertainment was provided by DJ Scottie G who showed off his new digital sound and light system. Ptarmigans danced to many of our "old" favorites. We were even entertained with a few Karaoke numbers performed by our talented members. Always a highlight of our banquet is the presentation of the MVP (Most Valuable Ptarmigan) award. Kathy Seufert, this year's recipient, was presented with a framed MVP certificate and a $100 Visa gift card. Also honored for their "behind the scenes" contributions to the ski club were Barb Stephens, recording secretary, and Mary Mihalow, the long time newsletter printer and mailer. Each received a framed Honorable Mention certificate and a $50 Visa Gift card. Deb and John Esposito received a framed certificate and ski club logo tee shirt each for their amazing number of areas skied: Deb 19 and John 20, ranging from the East Coast to the West, including British Columbia. (Retirement Rocks!!!) Thanks to all of the folks who helped to make this event such a success (Jeanne Weiser, Bill Ortner, Kathy Seufert, Pat and Mike Combs, Jim Policelli) and to all of the Ptarmigans who came out to enjoy this event. Cloudy With A Chance of..."ptarmigans" Saturday, April 30th, proved to be a perfect day for the second annual Koder Hike and Soup Party. Although cloudy, the temperature was a mild 55 degrees and there was no rain. Twenty five Ptarmigans turned out to hike or bike the Upper Saucon Community Park trail. The hikers covered a leisurely four mile round trip walk. The two cyclists (Lori and Jim Farina) rode about fifteen miles. Deb and Brett Koder hosted the after hike party at there lovely home just a few twisty miles down the road. Five delicious soups were served and everyone contributed a goodie to share.
Ptarmigan Ski Club Officers and Board Members 2016/2017 Mary Ann Bedics - President: Officers On July 1st I will begin my tenth year of retirement from the Phillipsburg School District. Serving as an elementary teacher and a high school guidance counselor for thirty seven years prepared me for the role as president of the Ptarmigan Ski Club. In education I had to organize, plan, mediate, make decisions, trouble shoot, reach out, meet deadlines and plan some more. All of these skills have been my guide as I fulfill my fifth term as your president. Thanks you for the confidence to elect me once again. It is an honor to lead this loyal and dedicated organization. Jeanne Weiser Vice President, Skiing: Previously, I worked as an office mgr. for 20 years at a local law firm. I presently work 3 part-time jobs - ski instructor, bike and river guide, and tipstaff at the Lehigh County Courthouse. Member of Ptarmigan since the late 70's. Board member for 11 years. I have been skiing for most of my adult life. I like biking, playing my air guitar, watching the Phillies; but my first love will always be skiing. My ashes will one day be among the moguls on Main St. at Blue Mountain Kathy Seufert Treasurer: I have been working at St. Luke s Hospital since 1974. I have 2 sons, Greg & Chris who enjoy snowboarding. Enjoyed skiing, and might take it up again. Biking is very popular in my spare time. Have done some traveling to parts of the USA. During the past year I have officially retired (after 42 years of service) from St. Luke s University Hospital. With all my free time, I can be found enjoying many of the Ptarmigan activities. Some activities that I am involved in are golfing, bicycle riding (over 500 miles last year), and volleyball. Yes, I was even spotted skiing on the slopes of Switzerland and Blue Mtn. I invite everyone to come out and enjoy the company of other ptarmigans and the fun we all have. My experience in being a treasurer is also extended to another organization pertaining to vascular ultrasound (NEPVC) for several years. I have 2 sons, Gregory who has remained in the area and can be found at Allentown Brew Works. Christopher will be moving further away to Milwaukee, WI. To continue his studies. Barb Stephens Recording Secretary: During the past year, I have semi-retired from real estate but continue as the office manager in a dental practice. Family trips with my husband Brian and sons Jay and Jeff fill my calendar. This summer Jay will marry Niki in Las Vegas. I can't wait to finally welcome a "daughter" into my family. Being a board member has enriched my life thru the dear friendships I have made over the years. I encourage other members to join the board. You will enjoy the experience. Mary Laronge Membership Secretary: I ve been a member since 1973, native of Allentown, Realtor with Re/Max Real Estate for 27 years. I like skiing, golf, bridge and maj jong. Have organized the Road Rally and Miniature Golf outings for the club. Board Members Brian Nuss Board Member, Past President: From a very early age, Brian has had a pair of skis strapped to his feet every winter. And aside from that one unfortunate event where he was "prematurely evacuated" from the lift because "it was the best option" his mother could see, he's enjoyed every moment of it. Since growing up on the slopes of Hahn Mountain and Doe Mountain, Brian has matured (loosely speaking) into a passionate Snowsports enthusiast becoming actively involved in the Ptarmigan Ski Club's B.O.D., and as the creator/organizer of the Winter Sports Expo. In his winter free time, Brian is a staff trainer & ski instructor at Bear Creek Mtn. Resort, a volunteer instructor for the EPSC's Learn To Ski program, a western ski trip leader for Last Chair Tours, and a product ambassador for Rossignol Skis. In Brian's opinion, "Money can't buy happiness, but it sure can by a lift ticket!" Bill Ortner Board Member, Elected and Newsletter Editor Lifelong skier, Past, Past President of Ptarmigan, Newsletter Editor and Connoisseur of Fine Wine. I have been active in Ptarmigan since 1996. Retired in 2006 from Agere Systems (formally Bell Labs), after 42 years of service, where I worked as an Electrical/Electronics Engineer. I now devote my time to Skiing, Gardening, Boating, Canoeing, Hiking, Fishing, Summers in the Adirondacks, Reading, Friends and Family; but not necessarily in that order. Well, ok, I guess Skiing very high on the list! My favorite European ski areas are in Austria, Switzerland and Italy; Stateside my favorites are Utah, Colorado and Montana; and of course Whiteface and Gore Mountains in the Adirondacks. And Locally at Blue Mt.
Pat Combs Board Member, Appointed: I am a recycled Board Member, having served on the Board in the 1980s in several capacities. In my hiatus I married and became a stepmother but could not convince anyone to ski. After retirement from teaching I took a job at Buckman s Ski Shop, renewed my love of skiing and rejoined the Club. I am coordinating the weekly golf outings for the club in the hope to improve my own game and for the camaraderie of fellow golfers. In my retirement I like to travel and read. Mostly I have enjoyed reconnecting with old friends from Ptarmigan Ski Club. Ronnie Rother Board Member, Elected: Thirty-six years of teaching elementary school which required lesson plans delivered in dress pants morphed a year ago to travel plans (near and far) in sweat pants. Yes, retirement is wonderful but "retirement recess" is the best. This past January I was able to go outside and play on the grounds near the Matterhorn (Zermatt, Switzerland) with many other fellow Ptarmigan friends skiing both the Swiss and Italian Alps. I hope there'll be many more snowy "recesses" for me in the very near future. When not snowplowing down a slope (pizza!), I'm living life BIG with my family, swinging a hammer (sometimes a ball-peen...ha!) on a Habitat for Humanity Lehigh Valley worksite, railing on 25+ mile bike tours, knitting/crocheting, baking/cooking, demanding chocolate, and/or traveling, but always...reading. Thank you for your confidence in electing me to the board; I love being part of this wonderful flock. Joyce Gilmore Board Member, Elected: I am a retired school teacher from Moravian Academy where I taught elementary school for 43 years. Being retired is one of the best things that ever happened to me! I spend my time skiing, biking, hiking, reading, cooking, helping elderly friends, and taking care of my cats. In the past I founded a no kill cat shelter in Kutztown and was involved in animal rescue with cats, dogs, goats, and cows. I love being on the ski club Board and helping to plan many activities. It is great being a member of a club with so many active, positive, fun loving people. Looking forward to another super year with Ptarmigan! Phil Hublitz Board Member, Appointed: Born in NYC, I moved here while still in elementary school. In college I majored in engineering eventually completing my degrees in education and teaching on junior high and middle school levels for 37 years. Started skiing in my twenties, joining the Ptarmigan Ski Club in 1964 and meeting my wife Jackie at the Wobbly Barn on a club trip to Killington that year. We have one daughter Jennifer, a career executive who lives in NYC. There were several decades where I did not ski a great deal but hit the slopes hard after retiring in the early two thousands. Other interests, as many well know, include: golf, fishing, computer technology, photography, volunteer community service to veterans and travel. Hope to continue with the annual picture show but in a more abbreviated form. Enjoy everyone's company in this club; it is great to be a part of this organization. Tim White Board Member, Appointed: Originally from California, started skiing at Doe Mtn when our kids were young. Work in agricultural research since 1978. RESPONSIBLILTY CLAUSE Encompasse Tours, LLC (d/b/a Encompasse Tours) is the principal tour operator and is responsible to the participants for all arrangements and for all tour services and accommodations offered in the tour. Last Chair Tours, LLC (d/b/a Last Chair Tours) is the host and promoter of this trip. CHANGE OF ITINERARY Any changes in the itinerary will result in a $100 change fee plus $25 surcharge per person, and any additional changes as a result of the change IF the change is possible. AIRLINE INFORMATION Traveler information submitted must be identical to the passenger s Passport, Drivers License, or Government issued ID name (i.e.: no nicknames). Domestic flights require an exact match of a traveler s name to his/her valid form of identification (i.e. driver s license, passport, etc). Seat assignments cannot be requested without names and are solely controlled by the airlines as group seating; once seats have been assigned to the groups, no changes will be allowed special requests must be made in writing and are considered pending until confirmation has been received from the airline. Frequent flier upgrades will be permitted only in circumstances where the carrier allows them, and are only obtainable at the discretion of the airline. CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY Some restrictions and penalties apply to your vacation investment. If you cancel your reservation(s), YOUR RIGHT TO A REFUND IS LIMITED, as set forth in the following schedule.
