Guar ether : Superior Water-retention agent Thickener & Rheology-modifier Guar Gum is a polysaccharide extracted from the seeds of the guar beans, grown in Southern Asia for centuries. Jingkun has been souring the unique material from this region for 20 years, controlling each stage of the extraction and processing to assure consistent quality. The exceptional properties of this biocompatible and renewable plant are the basis for Jingkun s guar ether products for construction industry.
What is HPG? Guar gum is extracted from the seed of the leguminous shrub of Cyamposis tetragonoloba. Leguminous is cultivated in the semiarid region of tropical countries particular in India/ Pakistan. It is usually found in the form of "splits", that are the endosperms of the seed derived from the husk and from the inner proteinic part. Guar gum in the form of powder of different particle size, which is obtained from the splits by milling. Hydroxypropyl guar gum (HPG) is synthesized by the etherification reaction with nonionic propylene oxide reagent with guar gum. This modification can significantly improve the important properties of unmodified gum like alkaline stability, hydrophobicity, solubility, biostability etc. in context to their application in construction application. The adequate degree of molar substitution in HPG lead to excellent water retention properties, which is most important parameter in most of the construction application. The HPG improve the performance / workability when typically applied in tile adhesives, tile grouts, cement based wall putty, cement / gypsum based plaster, cement based texture plaster, cement / gypsum based crack filler, flooring and leveling compound etc. Due to its excellent thickening efficiency and pseudo plastic rheology behavior, this product also helps to improve the sag resistance of plaster/ mortar when apply on vertical wall.
Characteristics of HPG Water retention Water retention in most of the building materials is one of the most important parameters. It gives the capability of the mixture to maintain water inside, by allowing a better setting of the binder and reducing the unpleasant effects of the plastic shrinking. As per the picture showed, we made two sets of mortar. One containing HPG JK-705, and one without. Place same weighted quantity of two mortar separately on a filter paper. The filter paper absorbs the water from the mortar without JK-705; while the mortar containing JK-705 remains the water inside for a long time. In this case, JK-705 shows good water retention ability when it applied in the mortar. Mortar with Mortar without HPG K-705 HPG JK-705
Characteristics of HPG Consistency Consistency is an important parameter to avoid the plaster sagging and improve the resistance to the tile sagging when applied on the vertical wall. As per the picture showed, we made two sets of mortar. One containing HPG JK-705, and one without. The mortar contains the JK-705 gives good standing and still strength on spatula while another mortar straight runs out from the spatula. Consistency test
Characteristics of HPG Rheology modifying The water contain in the mortar acts as lubricants for the solid particles when mortar is spread on the surface of the objects to which it is applied. The proper amount of water gives mortar the pastiness or creaminess which is suitable for uniform and easy application. This rheological characteristic of the final mortar mixture are very important and it depends on the kind and amount of different ingredients used in the mortar. The simple mixture of cement, sand and water is not suitable for use as a good mortar because of the lack of the above rheological characteristics and also because of its poor processing. This problem can be overcome by selecting the additives used in the formulation of mortars which act as a both water retention aid and rheology modifier. This additive is HPG, which exhibits the specific characteristic of bonding and coordinating a large amount of water once they are dissolved in water.
Why Choose HPG? Compared with cellulose ether, HPG is easier to soluble in water. Due to similar water retention ability, HPG can replace cellulose ether with x equal quantity for application of low viscosity & small dosage. For application of high viscosity & big dosage, HPG can t completely x replace cellulose ether. But use HPG together with cellulose ether can get x better performance. When applied in gypsum based mortar, HPG can distinctly enhance x workability and ease of application. When applied in cement based mortar, HPG can replace cellulose ether with x equal quantity. HPG can endow cement based mortar with better anti-sagging, x thixotropy and ease of application. Due to its cheaper price, end-users can get considerable cost-cutting.
