Provide the highest level of technical support for applications running campus and department critical systems that support the mission of the University. Analyze, plan, design, develop, test, install, update, tune, diagnose, administer, secure, monitor, and troubleshoot applications, network, servers, hardware, and operating systems. Use independent judgment in execution of responsibilities and a high degree of customer service in providing consultation and solutions to campus clients. Campus Job Scope: Department Specific Job Scope: This position is one of many Systems Administration Services team members within Information and Educational Technology? Enterprise Applications and Infrastructure Services group. The SAS team provides Linux, windows, and firewall administration to campus departments to address their needs. Positions Supervised: Essential Responsibilities: NA 70% SYSTEMS APPLICATION ADMINISTRATION Provide expert level of windows systems application support for campus enterprise and infrastructure systems. Build and deploy on-premise, SaaS, and PaaS environments to support highly available and scalable web applications.
Install, upgrade, maintain and support various windows server environments and provide application support for various infrastructure and client applications, including IIS, SQL Server, Reporting Applications, enterprise vendor applications, and thirdparty supporting applications. Plan and coordinate testing changes, upgrades, and new services, ensuring systems will operate correctly in current and future environments. Collaborate with infrastructure, OS, and DBA technical teams to ensure proper integration of the environment. Collaborate with business owners and develop expertise with the business processes supported by the relevant applications. Maintain and improve the highest levels of systems availability, content delivery, and customer satisfaction. Performance and capacity planning: monitor, reconfigure and tune hardware and software for performance improvements and future scalability. Identify and research emerging technologies to improve current applications, architectures and processes. Participate with systems architecture planning. Follow configuration, change and incident management process for any production implementation. Maintains systems documentation and standard operating procedures. 10% SCRIPTING AND PROGRAMMING Develop scripts and automation tools used to build, integrate, monitor and deploy software releases and application environments. Develop scripts to assist in administration of server, application, and user accounts management using a combination of Powershell, VBscript, or other appropriate languages. Develop and maintain scripts, which allow programmatic system configuration changes whenever deemed necessary. Configure programmatic access to other campus-wide resources such as campus LDAP, IAM, or the campus Active Directory. 10% SECURITY
Provide daily administration and support as needed for host and network security monitoring and assistance to security staff in detection and follow-up to security related incidents for campus infrastructure and client hosted systems of varying architectures and operating systems. Install, configure, and maintain appropriate security applications for monitoring of security events Ensure server and application environments are configured according to industry security best practices and meet or exceed regulatory and UC Davis CyberSafety requirements. Participate in security and regulatory audits and perform mitigation measures to meet corrective actions by required deadlines. Conduct security evaluations and application scanning. Provide security reports to content owners and work closely to provide solutions that mitigate and/or eliminate vulnerabilities. Other responsibilities include system logs analysis, using various monitoring tools, user and service account management, backup and recovery, and the setup, testing, and implementation of new applications. 10% TECHNICAL SUPPORT Provide secondary technical support for hardware, operating system, and applications problems on the various hosting environments. Work closely with application development teams and vendors to tune and troubleshoot applications Diagnose application, operational, hardware, or operating system problems; coordinate appropriate solutions with vendors and appropriate staff. Work with campus systems administrators, operations staff members, network administrators, database administrators, campus work groups, and/or vendors to analyze, resolve, or escalate technical systems issues Physical Demands: Work Environment: Sit for extended periods of time working at a computer terminal using a keyboard to enter and retrieve data. Due to the mission-critical services provided by this department, this position may work hours other than M-F 8-5, especially in response
to system problems. Work in a busy office environment with frequent interruptions. Occasional travel required. Travel between campus and off-campus locations. Background Check: QUALIFICATIONS Yes Technical experience with daily system administration of Windows operating systems in a production setting which includes the configuration of Windows internals, disk file systems, devices and device drivers, data communications and TCP/IP networking and the implementation of host security and network security. Technical experience with memory management, thread and process models, inter-process synchronization and communication, file systems, relational database management systems, disk and network I/O, thread and/or process model, physical database layout, file and print services, system monitoring and administration. Minimum Qualifications: Technical experience with system administration of a complex distributed and integrated Windows environment including but not limited to configuration and maintenance of Active Directory, Microsoft SQL, IIS, Clustering, Network Load Balancing, Remote Desktop Services and other Windows applications. Experience installing, configuring, and performance tuning Windows systems. Programming experience with Powershell, VBscript, or similar languages. Technical experience to manage multiple hardware and software platforms, including x86 systems, virtual hosts, SANs, and network file systems. Experience working in an environment using established standards, practices, and methodologies, including local development, version control, issue queues, support ticket systems, quality reviews, and project management.
Experience provisioning and configuring cloud hosted Microsoft server and Microsoft SQL environments utilizing Amazon AWS or Microsoft Azure. Experience to evaluate computer security including the implementation of complex campus security standards to both workstations and servers. Experience performing complex needs analysis, system planning, design, procurement, testing, implementation, administration, troubleshooting, problem remediation, documentation, and capacity planning in a Windows environment. Experience with TCP/IP networking including routing, DNS, HTTP, major protocols Experience to assess and understand business needs and apply IT to meet business needs in a supportable manner, understanding the practical implications of the application of information technologies. Interpersonal and written communication skills to communicate with all hierarchical and technical levels at the University and to prepare and present written and oral reports. Experience with ITIL based incident and change management processes. Knowledge and experience of other relational and document-based database systems such as NoSQL, and Oracle. Programming experience using Structured Query Language (SQL) - Oracle Procedural Language (PL/SQL). Preferred Qualifications for Selection: Experience developing complex SQL queries, views, triggers, stored procedures, and relational database architecture. Knowledge of the software development lifecycle and agile scrum methodologies. Knowledge of Web Services and Services Oriented Architecture Experience with PCI compliance and practices.
