From the Concept of the Honorable Merchant to the Certified CSR-Manager Training The Tradition of the honorable businessman dates back to the 12 th century Europe. Merchants of the Hanseatic League and in Italy used it as mean of self-awareness and to reassure buyers of their trustworthiness. Important principles included reliability, honesty, honorable actions serving as a moral compass and sustainability of their ventures. Ever since, the picture of the honorable businessman or merchant has changed but never vanished as a way to do business. Today, the topic becomes more and more important again and is losing any timely or regional limitation. The current financial and economic crisis diminished consumers trust in companies and profit orientation. Clients believe that today s business practices go against social interests and, therefore, their own interests. As a result, enterprises have to work hard to achieve and retain a good reputation. A reference to the values of the respectable businessman seems fit to build and maintain public trust in a distrustful environment. Businesses are increasingly expected to act economically, socially and environmentally sustainable. Rising customer awareness and energy costs are among the reasons for which CSR strategies are becoming a standard in large companies. Certified CSR-Manager Training Content The Certified CSR Manager training is based on a curriculum developed by German business and CSR experts following international standards. The training has kickedoff successfully in Germany in 2013, and MGCC will be the first foreign Chamber of Commerce and Industry offering this Certificate in Malaysia. The starting points and relevance of specific CSR topics may vary depending on the size and business nature of each company. That s why the program will not only focus on providing a comprehensive, overall understanding of CSR, but it will likewise concentrate on delivering tools and instruments which are useful for developing individual CSR strategies as well as the implications, benefits and expenses. Each participant will develop an ongoing case study with the help of the lecturers. It is the aim to develop a specific CSR strategy implying a practicable solution and course of action for each participant s company. Therefore, the study and its applicability shall provide practical solutions for every-day questions in the respective industries and business environments. At the end of the training, the participant will take a final examination in form of a project presentation. The Trainers and Experts Associate Professor Dr. Shanthy Rachagan Dr. Shanthy Rachagan is the Course Director for the Faculty of Business and Economics, Monash University. Her principal research interest is in corporate law, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility and banking and finance law. She is actively involved with profession bodies and was appointed as a member of the Listing Committee of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad. Dr. Shanthy is a non-practising Advocate and Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya. Dr. Manjit Singh Sandhu Dr Manjit Singh Sandhu is currently a Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of the Department of Management, School of Business, Monash University. He also holds the Deputy Director s post for Higher Degree Research. His principal research interest is mainly in internationalization of firms, knowledge sharing, entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility. He is a member of the European International Business Academy, Academy of International Business and Network for Business Sustainability.. Dr. Jashua Rajesh Modapothala Dr. Jashua Rajesh Modapothala is Lecturer in School of Business Monash University. His principal research interest is in organizational practices especially on Corporate Social Responsibility, Environmental Reporting, and Business Information Systems. His research on assessing CSR reports using text mining was unique and was published in Springer and presented at IEEE international conferences. The Trainers and Experts (continued) Dr. Jayanthi Naidu Desan Dr. Jayanthi Naidu Desan is the founder and Managing Director of Synergio, one of Malaysia s leading sustainability strategy consultancies. She has wide experience in the area of governance and sustainability and has worked extensively with governmental agencies, corporations and non- profit organizations in Malaysia. Before consultancy, she was the Executive Director of the Malaysian Centre of Regulatory Studies, University Malaya. As an experienced trainer, she has also conducted training and provided lectures for institutions across Asia, Europe and the Middle East, in various sustainability and community investment areas. Dr. Jayanthi has a PhD in the area of standards of corporate responsibility from Queen Mary, University of London. Sumitra Nair Sumitra Nair is Director of Youth at the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDEC). Prior to her current role, Sumitra was extensively involved in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, through her past positions as Head of Corporate Responsibility and Stakeholder Management at DiGi Telecommunications; and independent Corporate Responsibility Consultant in Malaysia and USA. Sumitra holds a Post Graduate Certified Diploma in Accounting and Finance from the ACCA, Executive Management Certificate in International Marketing from INSEAD University, as well as a Bachelor of Economics with Honours in Business Administration from University Malaya.
