George Westinghouse conceived the straight air brake while sitting in a passenger car that was delayed while the wreckage of a head-on collision between two freight trains was cleared from the tracks ahead of him. Engineers in each locomotive saw the oncoming train, and both signaled the need for an emergency stop by sounding whistles, but could do little to avoid a collision. A few years later, George Westinghouse introduced the straight air brake, in which a mechanical compressor delivered air from car to car through a series of pipes and hoses to force brake shoes against the turning wheels of a train to stop it.
