17.03.2014 Biogas Hybrid Buses in Public Transport Oddmund Sylta, Managing director, Skyss

Hordaland county In population the third largest county in Norway (after Oslo and Akershus) Approx. 500 000 inhabitants The administration is located in Bergen

Skyss Skyss is a part of the administration of Hordaland County Skyss was established in November 2007 Skyss is the administrative body that plans, purchases and markets the public transport services governed by Hordaland County Contracts for the operation of bus/ferry/boat/light rail routes are awarded to private traffic companies after tender competitions

Contracts in Skyss Bus 11 contracts 782busses Bybanen(Bergen Light Rail) 1 contract 18 trams (20) Ferry 6 ferrycontracts 17 ferrycrossing 20 ferries Boat 9 contracts 11 boats Erfaring med

Skyss responsibilities Purchasing transport services and supervision of contracts Route planning Marketing Assessing ticket fares Customer Centre Public information Schedule information User surveys Ticketing and sales systems Operating bus terminals Real time system Further development of public transport

Environmental strategy for Skyss 2013 More people on public transport Optimizing environmental impact of light rail Reducing the environmental impact of boat and ferry transport Providing environmentally friendly buses

Our first priority: Public transport should take traffic growth Develop public transport where we get the greatest environmental benefit Increase the capacity of the public transport system Faster buses through urban areas Improve conditions for bikes at stops and hubs

Kollektivstr ategi for

Environmentally friendly buses: Use biogas from local suppliers in buses in and around Bergen Use electric buses Use the quietest buses in noise sensitive areas

Serving as a catalyst for Research and Development by: Participate in the research and development of effective ways to increase the share of public transport and reduce car traffic Communicating public transport needs in various urban planning processes Initiate the development and testing of new, more environmentally friendly technologies and fuels Develop tendering processes that ensure innovation and environmental technology development

Year 2000

Biogas significant investments in Bergen 81 new gas buses in 2011 11 new gas buses in 2014 2 biogas hybrid in 2014

Biogas major investments Haukås depot LNG tanking. Currently 37 Mercedes articulated buses park here. The facility is designed for expansion Mannsverk depot LNG tanking. Operates 44 gas buses

Biogas plant under construction in Bergen City of Bergen is building a biogas plant based on sewage sludge A new bus depot is planned nearby the biogas plant Capacity of approx. 80 buses

What is the future fuel for buses in Bergen?

Biogas - part of the solution Biogas is 100 percent renewable and suitable as fuel for city buses Low emissions of components that provides local air pollution To use biogas as fuel can be more " climate - effective " than using it to produce electricity or heat Biogas is produced locally from local substrates Biogas/electric hybrid provides the best utilization of biogas

The Project The Biogas Hybrid Bus Project in Bergen aims to demonstrate the technology in practice, in addition to being the driving force for the use and further development of biogas hybrid technology.

Biogas Hybrid Buses - Procurement Process Step 0: Legal Review of Procurement Step 1: Qualifying Phase Preparation Qualification Evaluation Step 2: Tender Phase Preparation Tender Evaluation Negotiation Awarding Delivery This is where we are now!

The Project EU-project - 2013-2014 Transnova - 2013-2015 Two buses Total budget: ca. 20 mill. NOK or 2.4 mill. EUR

Exemption from Norwegian Public Road Authorities Norwegian public road authority has granted exemption to run 24 -meter buses on line 2 Skyss also considers other lines in the city center, and will identify physical measures that must be implemented before the buses are put into regular traffic Skyss will follow up how these long vehicles perform in city traffic

Progress The first bus will be delivered in September 2014 and the second in November Skyss will together with HOG Energy ensure that operation and performance experiences from the hybrid buses are being collected and distributed to the financial contributors, EU partners, and to other stakeholders
