1 Ambitious strategies for clean urban mobility in Europe CIVITAS - Introduction CIVITAS - cleaner and better transport in cities stands for CIty-VITAlity-Sustainability. CIVITAS is an EU initiative for supporting and evaluating the implementation of integrated sustainable and energy-efficient urban transport strategies in European cities that should make a real difference to the welfare of the European citizen. 1
2 CIVITAS Objectives and key elements Objectives Developing and implementing Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP s) Expand the 'toolbox' of urban mobility solutions with urban transport measures (technical and policy-based) that have been tested through the CIVITAS demonstration activities European platform to allow stakeholders (public authorities, private sector, research institutions, etc) to cooperate and exchange CIVITAS In figures 3 phases ( ) 58 CIVITAS Cities 19 CIVITAS projects 13 demonstration projects Measures are reaching 52.4 million citizens Total budget: approx. EUR 250 million Total EC contribution: approx. EUR 180 million 2

4 CIVITAS II success stories Burgos, Spain Access restriction in the city centre: results 4 km 2 clean zone in the historical centre and monument area, bigger than initially planned Traffic jams reduced by more than 25 percent Emissions reductions: 0,1 tonnes of CO 2 per inhabitant in the last 3 years & 2g less of NO x per m 3 40g reduction in particulate matter per m 3 97 percent reduction in car traffic (<2,000 vehicles per day) with 200 percent increase in pedestrians and 400 percent in bikes Good levels of awareness and acceptance CIVITAS II success stories Toulouse, France Solutions for alternative fuels and complementary measures to achieve a 100 percent clean bus fleet: results Biodiesel experimentation on 81 old diesel buses Purchase of diesel buses equipped with soot filters and installation of soot filters on old diesel buses Feasibility study on how to use biogas for the operation of the CNG bus fleet 4
5 Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain New public transport network: results From 17 bus lines with frequencies of minutes to 1 tram line, 1 rapid transit bus, 9 bus lines with frequencies of 10 minutes Increase of 45 percent in number of trips per month Increase of over half a million users since January 2009 Speed of service improved by 14.5 percent Reduction of 6 percent in fuel consumption Future steps: construct 4 queue-jumping lanes, 20 new bus platforms, increase tram schedules Iasi, Romania School travel plans: results Mass information collection exercise: over 2,000 students Five universities and 11 schools targeted Travel plans finalised tailored based on the age of pupils (7 to 23) Recognition that students of different ages have different use patterns and travel requirements Next step: encourage the use of public transport, and dedicate a special section of the campaign to students and pupils 5
6 Aalborg, Denmark New city bike scheme: results 135 city bikes have been placed at 19 stations Stations are close to main bus stops and train stations, to encourage tourists and citizens to make multi-modal journeys Bikes are free to use City of Aalborg Brighton & Hove, United Kingdom Commuter travel plans: results Seven companies/organisations have now become involved in the programme A cycle training incentive scheme is being used in one large organisation to help develop and implement their travel plan Baseline travel data has now been obtained for the majority of businesses using the I-Trace software package Delivery of a Bike to Work incentive scheme in three businesses, offering cycle training to adults 6
