TOWARDS 2020 STRATEGIC PLAN GROWING AND STRENGTHENING WATER POLO IN AUSTRALIA

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO Our purpose is to grow the sport of water polo at all levels, increasing participation and achieving sustainable success at the elite level. To achieve this, we re working alongside our water polo community to develop a unified national plan a new initiative for Water Polo in Australia. It will benefit participants at all levels across all codes, and guide water polo forward to greater success. The Towards 2020 Strategic Plan is focused on further developing and consolidating the key building blocks of our sport. The plan is ambitious in the amount of significant pieces of work we want to deliver over the next four years but we believe it is achievable with the assistance of resources from our member states and territories. In delivering this plan we believe we will meet the Purpose and the Vision as stated and continue to grow the sport of Water Polo in Australia. Phil Garling President Christian Renford CEO

BACKGROUND Water Polo Australia Ltd (WPA) is the national governing body for the sport of water polo in Australia. It is charged with the development of water polo players, officials, coaches and volunteers throughout Australia and with the conduct of competitions and championships for all levels of participation. Water Polo Australia s purpose is To grow the sport of water polo at all levels, increasing participation and achieving sustainable success at the elite level The sport s membership currently comprises approximately 22,500 registered club participants with a further estimated reach of 25,000 people exposed to the sport of water polo through non-member events and unaffiliated school programs. The National Water Polo League (club based) is Australia s premier domestic water polo competition. The introduction of the inaugural National Youth Festival will bring together all WPA s Age Championships in 2018, providing a clear competitive pathway for U/12 through to U/18 aspiring athletes. The sport is governed by the WPA Board made up of five Directors elected by the states and territories. In addition to these five Directors, the Athletes Commission nominates a Director and the Board may appoint an additional two Directors. The Directors elect the President of the Board. The CEO directs the day-to-day activities of WPA through a national office based in Sydney. The development of the Towards 2020 Strategic Plan has involved a comprehensive consultation process. A Whole of Sport Planning Forum was held in February 2017 bringing all state and territory associations together to identify the priorities for the sport and to discuss the concept of unified behaviours. Following the forum, an initial working draft strategic plan was developed by the WPA Board for stakeholder consultation. Another two iterations of the draft plan were circulated for comment and stakeholders were brought together in May 2017 via a teleconference forum for discussion. The WPA Board finalised the strategic plan in June 2017. The strategic plan and its priorities will form the agenda for the Board and guide all decision-making. The plan will be regularly monitored and reviewed by the Board. The rolling plan will be formally reviewed and updated annually and adjusted to take into account changing operating environments or the identification of new opportunities.
