DSO Toolbox for 100% RES Usage of DER Flexibility in Minigrids EURELECTRIC Annual Convention and Conference Vilnius, 7 June 2016 Marcus Merkel, EWE NETZ GmbH EWE NETZ grid area is decades ahead of Energiewende targets on RES in Germany Development targets of the German government = Energiewende targets on RES Share of power generated based on Renewables or conventional Sources Renewables Conventional 2014 By 2050 28 % EWE NETZ: RES infeed provides 75% of consumption, in some month 94% Share of power generated based on Renewables or conventional Sources Renweables Conventional 63 % 75 % 94 % 2012 2014 Dez 2013 Eurlectric - Vilnius 2016 DSO Toolbox for 100% RES Usage of DER Flexibility in Minigrids - EWE NETZ GmbH M. Welcome to the evolving power system: efficient, small scale optimized, decentralized, based on fluctuating renewable energy sources Cold Storage Eurlectric - Vilnius 2016 DSO Toolbox for 100% RES Usage of DER Flexibilityin Minigrids - EWE NETZ GmbH M. Merkel 3 In Germany, more than 95% of RES capacity is connected to distribution grids LV = 230-400V 1,150,000km RES curtailment Distribution grids MV = 10/20/30kV 510,000km RES curtailment HV = 110kV 95,000km redispatch Transmission grids EHV = 220/380kV 35,000km not smart RES generation capacity connected not smart 45% not smart smart, if (120 GW): 25% 25% 5% Eurlectric - Vilnius 2016 DSO Toolbox for 100% RES Usage of DER Flexibility in Minigrids - EWE NETZ GmbH M. ... DSO task: ensure efficient local power system planning&development...load matters! Wind today 2030 PV Sources: EWE/NETZ / DENA (2012) / BNetzA (2015) Eurlectric - Vilnius 2016 DSO Toolbox for 100% RES Usage of DER Flexibilityin Minigrids - EWE NETZ GmbH M. Merkel 5 The power system game changers of yesterday and tomorrow... ENERGIEWENDE DIGITIZATION... = KICK start towards decentralization, decarbonisation, smart systems & digitization... = INCUBATOR of the Energy Transition Energiewende Eurlectric - Vilnius 2016 DSO Toolbox for 100% RES Usage of DER Flexibility in Minigrids - EWE NETZ GmbH M. Merkel 6 3

To ensure the smart transition we need to enhance the DSO toolbox! Smart grids promise a significant cost reduction potential. Based on available technologies the DSO must be enabled to develop an efficient system infrastructure. Eurlectric - Vilnius 2016 DSO Toolbox for 100% RES Usage of DER Flexibility in Minigrids - EWE NETZ GmbH M. Merkel 7 Methodology, toolbox approach & execution at EWE NETZ Analysis status quo identification of potential solutions development rating matrix simulation of representative grids evaluation network clustering Kriterium A Kriterium B Kriterium C Technologie A Technologie B Technologie C Conclusion 1: The best technical solution depends on local aspects (voltage level, urban framework, RES distribution) Conclusion 2: A smart control of the grid requires a sufficient share of measurement equipment especially at the medium voltage level Grid needs to become Smart Grid Ready Eurlectric - Vilnius 2016 DSO Toolbox for 100% RES Usage of DER Flexibility in Minigrids - EWE NETZ GmbH M. Merkel 9 Ex.: EWE proposal 2012 based on simulation: Grid hosting capacity for RES on DSO level could be doubled by using 5% DG-flexibility Targets of EWE NETZ: Fast & secure connection/ integration of RES on DSO level Cost reduction on DSO level by reducing the need for network expansion Utilize flexibility of RES to optimize grid development Grid hosting capacity in % 350 300 250 200 150 Dynamic curtailment of max. 5%! 100 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 Dynamic RES-curtailment in % of annual generated energy EWE Proposal 2012 Dynamic 5% approach of EWE NETZ according to RES Generation would offer the opportunity to double the grid hosting capacity on DSO level Eurlectric - Vilnius 2016 DSO Toolbox for 100% RES Usage of DER Flexibility in Minigrids - EWE NETZ GmbH M. Merkel 10 5

Verification of the simulation is done: Practical realization in 1-year field test Medium voltage minigrid with 11 RES generators Generation follows control within the limits of the grid Information flow Controller: BTC Grid Agent Eurlectric - Vilnius 2016 DSO Toolbox for 100% RES Usage of DER Flexibilityin Minigrids - EWE NETZ GmbH M. Merkel 11 Conclusion from applying the solution to the EWE MV-minigrid technical feasibility of the 5%-approach has been proofed successfully DER flexibility is valuable as local system service prototype of the Grid Agent in combination with an unusual strong wind situation lead to 6.9% of curtailed energy by further improvements (and less stronger wind!) 5% should be possible the new German Energy Law will include our 5%-approach as 3%- approach Within our upcoming Project enera we will implement the Version 2.0 of the Grid Agent in 10 further MV-grids It works! We can upscale the solution as smart (mini) grid operator Eurlectric - Vilnius 2016 DSO Toolbox for 100% RES Usage of DER Flexibilityin Minigrids - EWE NETZ GmbH M. Merkel 12 6
