Lesson topic: Lesson level: Content: Time required: Purchasing train tickets Introductory language learner 2 nd semester Linguistic and cultural 1.5 hours Teacher Instructions: This lesson is designed for students to utilise a range of vocabulary already covered in the classroom plus some additional new vocabulary specific to trains and purchasing tickets. A general indicator as to when students should undertake this lesson is: Textbook Lesson Contemporary Chinese for Beginners 15 New Practical Chinese Reader 11 Integrated Chinese Level 1 9 Great Wall Chinese 5 Chinese Made Easy Textbook 3 (Simple Characters Version) 12 Short-term Spoken Chinese (Threshold Vol. 1) 12 This lesson requires students to purchase a railway ticket at the virtual railway station based on a number of criteria that they are given at the start of the lesson in the form of instruction sheets outlining one of three roles (business person, tourist, and student). Each student is allocated one role. All three roles require students to purchase a ticket for a train that departs on the day of the lesson. However, each of the roles has different requirements in relation to when they must arrive at the destination (see role instruction sheets below) and the budget they have to work with. All roles require the purchase of a sleeper ticket. There are three trains available: 1462, 242, 110. Each train departs at night but arrives at the destination (Beijing) at different times the next day. The cost of each train ticket is also different. Each train has four different types of seating/berths: hard seater, soft seater, hard sleeper, soft sleeper. Each of the roles students are allocated requires them to buy a ticket for a sleeper berth so they can sleep during the overnight journey. Do not tell the students anything about the train numbers, costs, arrival times, accommodation. The purpose of the lesson is for students to use Chinese to interact with the NPC ticket seller 1 or read the train timetable posted in the railway station 2 to work out what ticket they need to buy, buy it from the NPC ticket seller 3, and then find the train carriage and berth indicated on their ticket. The details of the lesson are loosely based on real trains running from Shanghai to Beijing. The steps and procedures that the students have to go through are also loosely based on the real situation in China. The virtual train station, train tickets, and train carriages are all based on real world equivalents. In addition to providing students with the opportunity to practice language learned in 1 Interaction with the NPC ticket seller requires students to type what they want to say in Chinese characters and to read and understand the NPC responses which are also in Chinese characters 2 The timetable can be clicked to hear audio and display pinyin for unfamiliar terms. 3 Students will need to be wearing the HUD that contains the virtual wallet and will need to have money in the virtual wallet (can be obtained from the virtual ATMs) to be able to purchase tickets.
