Lesson topic: Lesson level: Content: Time required: Purchasing train tickets Introductory language learner 2 nd semester Linguistic and cultural 1.5 hours Teacher Instructions: This lesson is designed for students to utilise a range of vocabulary already covered in the classroom plus some additional new vocabulary specific to trains and purchasing tickets. A general indicator as to when students should undertake this lesson is: Textbook Lesson Contemporary Chinese for Beginners 15 New Practical Chinese Reader 11 Integrated Chinese Level 1 9 Great Wall Chinese 5 Chinese Made Easy Textbook 3 (Simple Characters Version) 12 Short-term Spoken Chinese (Threshold Vol. 1) 12 This lesson requires students to purchase a railway ticket at the virtual railway station based on a number of criteria that they are given at the start of the lesson in the form of instruction sheets outlining one of three roles (business person, tourist, and student). Each student is allocated one role. All three roles require students to purchase a ticket for a train that departs on the day of the lesson. However, each of the roles has different requirements in relation to when they must arrive at the destination (see role instruction sheets below) and the budget they have to work with. All roles require the purchase of a sleeper ticket. There are three trains available: 1462, 242, 110. Each train departs at night but arrives at the destination (Beijing) at different times the next day. The cost of each train ticket is also different. Each train has four different types of seating/berths: hard seater, soft seater, hard sleeper, soft sleeper. Each of the roles students are allocated requires them to buy a ticket for a sleeper berth so they can sleep during the overnight journey. Do not tell the students anything about the train numbers, costs, arrival times, accommodation. The purpose of the lesson is for students to use Chinese to interact with the NPC ticket seller 1 or read the train timetable posted in the railway station 2 to work out what ticket they need to buy, buy it from the NPC ticket seller 3, and then find the train carriage and berth indicated on their ticket. The details of the lesson are loosely based on real trains running from Shanghai to Beijing. The steps and procedures that the students have to go through are also loosely based on the real situation in China. The virtual train station, train tickets, and train carriages are all based on real world equivalents. In addition to providing students with the opportunity to practice language learned in 1 Interaction with the NPC ticket seller requires students to type what they want to say in Chinese characters and to read and understand the NPC responses which are also in Chinese characters 2 The timetable can be clicked to hear audio and display pinyin for unfamiliar terms. 3 Students will need to be wearing the HUD that contains the virtual wallet and will need to have money in the virtual wallet (can be obtained from the virtual ATMs) to be able to purchase tickets.

the classroom environment in an immersive simulation of the real environment, the lesson will also familiarise them with the real world process for purchasing train tickets in China. Lesson Plan: 1. Go through Lesson Objectives 2. Read through and familiarise yourself with New Words 3. Read and/or listen to Supplementary Listening & Reading Practice Trains in China 4. Read through Supplementary Information What does a train ticket look like in China? 5. Read through lesson Task and Assessment 6. Log into Second Life 7. Commence and complete Task 8. Practice reading railway station signs in Chinese 5. Practice reading ticket information in Chinese 6. Learn about the type of seating / tickets available on Chinese trains Lesson Task & Assessment You have to be in Beijing by the next day, so you need to buy a train ticket immediately. The only place you have any chance of getting a ticket so late is at the railway station. You will be allocated a role for this exercise. The roles are a business person, a tourist, or a student. Each role has different criteria in relation to reason for travelling to Beijing, time limits for travel, budget and level of comfort while on the train. Your goal is to buy a ticket that meets the criteria of the role you were assigned at the start of the lesson. There are two short quizzes to be completed: In the train carriage: o Click on the green box next to the berth indicated on your ticket On Moodle: o Click on the link provided to open quiz Lesson Location Copy the following address into a new browser tab to open a map of the location of today's lesson http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/monash%20university%202/81/92/26 Additional Vocab: The following vocabulary will help you determine which ticket you need to purchase for your role. 长途 - chángtú - long-distance

硬座 - yìng zuò hard seater 硬卧 - yìng wò hard sleeper 软座 - ruǎnzuò - soft seater 软卧 - ruǎn wò soft sleeper Supplementary Listening & Reading Practice Trains in China Read and or listen to the following information about trains and train tickets in China. If you find reading the characters difficult you can also listen to audio of the information by clicking the link below. To hear the above passage, click on the link below: Listen to Passage Link to audio file Supplementary Information - What does a train ticket look like in China? Chinese Train Ticket

For today's lesson, the most important information on the train ticket you will receive is the 车厢号 and 座位号. Be sure to look carefully on your ticket what type of berth you have purchased a ticket for. To make sure you find the right berth on the train please also look at the pictures below to familiarize yourself with what the different kinds of berths look like (colour may vary): 软卧 (ruǎn wò ) 硬卧 (yìng wò) For more information on Chinese train tickets see: China Train Tickets: http://www.chinatraintickets.net/faq/ Detailed Task Instructions for students: MAKE SURE YOU ARE WEARING YOUR HUD You will use the virtual wallet to pay for your ticket. Make sure your virtual wallet has money in it. If not, go to the nearest ATM and withdraw sufficient funds. Step 1: You will be given a sheet with specific details about your role (business person, tourist or student), your budget and your time limit for arriving in Beijing at the start of class. Step 2: Go to the 火车站 and enquire about a train ticket. You need to identify a suitable train to meet your specific needs. You can find out about trains, times & ticket costs by: Talking to the ticket seller behind the counter Looking at the train timetables on the wall (you can click on many of the headings to hear sound and see English meanings). Step 3: Purchase appropriate train ticket (MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH MONEY IN YOUR WALLET). You will receive a picture of the ticket as well as a wearable object. Open the picture / texture and then drag it to enlarge it. Compare what is written on your ticket with the picture of the ticket above and the pictures of the inside of a real train carriage above to work out what kind of ticket you have bought and where to find your berth (the place you will sleep on the train). You will also need to wear the wearable ticket to get onto the train platforms and into your train. Step 4: Find and get on your train.

Find the train platform ( 站台 - zhàntái) that your train to Beijing leaves from. Go into the carriage and find your berth (YOU WILL NEED TO READ YOUR TICKET CAREFULLY, particularly the type of berth your ticket is for. You will receive a picture of the ticket as well as a wearable object. Open the picture / texture and then drag it to enlarge it. You will need to wear the wearable ticket to get onto the train platforms and into your train.). To SHOW ( 出示 chūshì) or USE your ticket you will need to CLICK on the ticket in your hand. If this is too hard, open your Inventory, detach the ticket and then WEAR it. When you click on the ticket in your hand or detach and then Wear it again doors will open! Get on your train, find your berth and then click on the green box next to your berth and follow instructions. ONCE YOU HAVE FINISHED, PLEASE RAISE YOUR HAND IN CLASS. The teacher will come over to check your ticket. Step 5: Complete Quiz Complete the quiz on Moodle.

Quiz Questions In train carriage The quiz questions in the train carriage are designed to automatically determine if the student has purchased the appropriate ticket for the role they were assigned. Once they have answered each of the 3 questions they will be given automatic feedback about the ticket they purchased and a mark. Information about which ticket they purchased and the mark they received will also be stored in and displayed by a post outside the carriage. This information can be printed into chat and then copied in to, say, a Word document, by using the following commands: /channel print list the channel number is the train number (e.g. /242 print list) this will print details about which student purchased which ticket, whether they found the correct train and berth, and what mark they received. The list can be cleared by typing /channel reset e.g. /242 reset The following is an example of the questions to be answered in the train carriage quiz: What is your role? o Student o Tourist o Business person What ticket did you buy? o 1462 次 o 110 次 o 242 次 Based on the answer to these two questions the quiz box will determine if the student has purchased the correct ticket or not and if they have come to the right berth or not. It will also give students feedback about their purchase and an assessment mark 4. On Moodle Quiz outcomes: You will have a better understanding of the sorts of facilities provided on trains in China. You will add to your general and travel related vocabulary. You will use your knowledge of Chinese language to read the clues supplied and work out which items the clues relate to. Quiz instructions: Please read the following descriptions in Chinese of items and facilities provided in most train carriages in China carefully then look around the carriage and try to find the items and facilities. Once you have found them, click on them to find out what they are called in Chinese. Enter the Chinese terms in the spaces provided below.
