Polar Permafrost Review of Requirements, Achievements and Expected Data Annett Bartsch Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics, Vienna, Austria PSTG 6, ESTEC, Sept., 2016
Developments since last meeting The need for data in the Arctic was expressed at the JAXA ALOS 2 PI workshop in Nov. 2015, a selection of sites was made (5 out of 49), WMO PSTG was mentioned by a number of PI talks Sentinel 1 IW has been requested through ESA DUE GlobPermafrost > first IW images have been acquired this summer No further progress regarding the InSAR Permafrost focus group by Franz Meyer for NISAR preparation but individual discussions for TSX, especially SP InSARAp: Study of Potential Applications for Future Single Pass Interferometric SAR Instruments and HGF Allianz projects

Circumpolar applications SAR Wetlands other ESA CCI Landcover ASAR GM (C Band winter Backscatter, 1 km) Widhalm et al. 2015, IJRS Excludes soil moisture Active layer thickness from CALM sites
Circumpolar applications SAR December data only, due to impact of rain-on-snow Bartsch (2010a): Ten years of SeaWinds on QuikSCAT for snow applications Remote Sensing (lakes not masked) ASAR GM (C Band winter Backscatter, 1 km) Widhalm et al. 2015, IJRS Excludes soil moisture Seawinds QuikScat Ku-Band Daily air temperature range ERS C-band Bartsch (2010b)
Circumpolar applications SAR Wetness levels Sentinel 1 EW C HH 30m ENVISAT ASAR GM C HH 1km (Widhalm et al. 2015)
Local applications SAR Active layer thickness from CALM sites Active layer thickness Central Yamal C HH (frozen) Widhalm et al. 2016, LPS proceedings X HH, medium incidence angle (ALT < 60 cm can be retrieved from NDVI) Widhalm et al. 2016, Cryosphere discussion Polarimetry studies so far independed from permafrost features, problem is that fully polarimetric data are not available from site with good ground data

Circumpolar applications SAR Baseline dataset grounded ice fraction taliks in case of floating ice Radarsat access after 2007? need to combine several years Based on best available year for ASAR WS April 2008 Bartsch et al. in review
Sentinel 1 IW now regionally available no circumpolar products possible Problems with EW HV?
