Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Waste Minimization Resource Efficiency People s Well Being Integrated and continued application of preventive environmental practices and total productivity techniques to processes, products and services to increase efficiency and reduce risks to humans and environment 26 August 2015 NIES ITB research seminar 2

Centre for Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Indonesia (CRECPI) CRECPI was established by ITB in 2014 to catalyze the implementation of Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) in Indonesia, including through the development, transfer and deployment of green technologies Academic Courses, Training and Applied Research Industry Outreach, Capacity Building and Technical Assistance Specifically within the framework of the National Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Programme 26 August 2015 NIES ITB research seminar 3

Indonesia RECP Programme Strategic Approach Coordinated, networked strategy involving relevant line ministries, business sector and multiple service providers Customized models for RECP implementation and replication Small scale industries: metal products, chemical products, textile, and food/beverage Industrial areas: Makassar, Batam and East Java Tourism sector: Lombok and Yogyakarta (tbc) Micro enterprises: tofu and (informal) recycling National Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production Programme Indonesia Funded by Implemented by In partnership with NIES ITB research seminar 26 August 2015 4

Networked Implementation PMC (MoEF, MoI & SECO RCC Government, business, technical, professional Programme Management (UNIDO PM, CTA, NPO) CTB CRECPI ICPC CAGIE Business Services Providers (academia, technical/innovation centres etc) Network RECP Indonesia (NRECPI) SCP Resource Pool CRECPI will work with core team located at ITB and associated experts from different institutions around country to deliver industry advisory services 26 August 2015 NIES ITB research seminar 6

Low Carbon Industrial Development 26 August 2015 NIES ITB research seminar 7

Low Carbon Industrial Development Industrial Resource Efficiency delivering low carbon industrial development Complementary strategies Applicable at different levels: unit operation, plant, park, management, value chain 26 August 2015 NIES ITB research seminar 8

Dematerializing Products Vietnamese potteries improved their product designs, reducing material requirements by up to 20%, enabling equivalent savings on energy for firing kilns and product transport. Thai potteries improved their raw material preparation and can fire their products at lower temperatures saving up to 40% on energy use. 26 August 2015 NIES ITB research seminar 9

Increasing Process Efficiency G steel in Thailand operates integrated mini steel mill (EAF) with hot rolled coil production. It repositioned the EAF burners to improve efficiency of oxygen use and improved the operation of the casting machine (including installation of slag detector). The investment of USD210,000 generated annual savings over USD15million, reduced power use by 90 GWhr per annum and reduced GHG emissions by 43,000 tco2 eq annually 26 August 2015 NIES ITB research 10 seminar

Minimizing Process Emissions In Ankleshwar Industrial Estate (India) 12 companies used nitric acid oxidation which released 281 tons of nitrous oxide per year equivalent to 77,500 tons CO 2 eq. A new process based on catalytic oxidation with oxygen was developed, which eliminates N 2 O emissions and requires less energy. In total, annual GHG emissions are reduced by 88,000 tons CO 2 eq. 26 August 2015 NIES ITB research 11 seminar

Switching to Low Carbon Inputs Rathkerewa Desiccated Coconut Industry in Sri Lanka decreased CO 2 intensity by 90% (900 tons per year) by switching energy source from fossil fuels to waste coconut shells, which were previously landfilled. Closing the Carbon Loop Significant potential to reduce wastage of carbonaceous materials from agro processing value chains and convert remaining by product into high value food and other produce. Spent grains are turned into bread www.zeri.org 26 August 2015 NIES ITB research 13 seminar

Scaling-Up Resource Efficiency for Low Carbon Industrial Development through Eco-Industrial Parks Innovate More companies More impact per company Less effort per company Scaling Up Expand Streamline Eco- Industrial Parks Replicate Public Policy Public Institutions Markets Society Corporate Policy Mainstreaming Management Systems Incentives Rewards Public Disclosure 26 August 2015 NIES ITB research seminar 14
